| Flay Crimsonwind01-15-07, 08:40 PM | Alright, so you can guess what I'm doing from the first line: I'm stating out Doctor Who. Now at first, I thought "Maybe I shouldn't, he's gotta be epic, and it'd be really difficult to pull him off". And there are people who will agree. However, his character is easy enough to roleplay, and he's not so uber-broken a character in the first place to not be realistically buildable. So I took up the task. And thanks to the following people, it's done!! aelryinth - You helped out a lot, filling inn my knowledge gaps and providing thinking outside the box. RadicalTaoist - Cause I overlooked normal rces completely, thanks for the psionic influence. FeceMan - For catching my horrible spelling mistake before I was lynched. :P BadCatMan - for clarifying WHO trivia and making sure we didn't skew. Undrhil - who put as much work into this as anyone and who put more experience than I had. Thanks dude! Alignment: Chaotic Good; He's not really law bound, and in fact does many things with questionable actions or results, but he wont bring harm to a creature, even Daleks, unless he absolutely needs to. A good reason to play CG? Maybe. Note: Based on the ninth Doctor. Race: Elan Naturally psionic; psionics are used as the basis for the reincarnation and time travel, so naturally psionic means naturally endowed as a Timelord with these powers. Classes: Psion (minimum) 15 / Artificer (gnomish prefered) X Psions allow for the timelord abilities. Artificer allows for him to make stuff. Simple, if you ask me. Want skills? Either take the skill-point feat I can't remember the name of, or throw in a few levels of rogue. Rogue will definetly help, but it's not required, and you have to have a minimum 15 levels of psion to start working as a time traveling immortal Doctor, so don't slow it down! Remember, the Doctor, if I were to stat him out normally, would be something along the lines of a level 30 character, so work with what you have. Alternatively bard for every knowledge skill, or alternatively too the expert NPC class, though not recomended. Equipment:[/B] Sonic Screwdriver. What? Haven't you ever been bored before? Had to put up a lot of shelves? :D Basically it fixes/breaks machinery, and can even disrupt molecules in walls. As well as work as a basic (or actually, really advanced) chemical and physical scanner, for medical or construction based stuff. This is SO gonna have to be custom made. NOT!! Remember, this is mainly represented by his psionic powers. It could be just a masterwork craft-kit, which he uses in conjunction with his psionic abilities. Mechanically, perfect. If you want it to work independant, make it a djorje, or whatever the psionic wands are. Then the TARDIS: Body of the Tardis is just a Bag of Holding. Inside the dimensional portal is a Daern's instant Fortress (DMG). It's attached at the mouth of the bag, or now "box" of holding. Disguise the box with a power or spell if you want, but it works fine this way. Then you have the building that is the tardis. The heart of the Tardis is different. Since you're psionic, you have a psycrystal. Thus this can cast spells as you do. And it's telepathic. To make the box, you'll need lots of money; use this time to say you need to repair your Tardis, which has been damaged upon emergency landing. You should have it by level 5; the Tardis allows for people inside to speak any language. Thus the doctor can cast Tongues, Psionic by level 5. Done. It can teleport, thus travel, by level 9. The doctor has plenty of defensive moves until lv 15, when he can learn Astral Seed, thus regenerate after every and all deaths. Done, the Tardis, box and Heart, and it's connection to the doctor, is complete. Alternatively, possibly cheaper and earlier, you could use a living vault as the tardis, as long as you can move yourself. |
| aelryinth01-15-07, 08:51 PM | Psionics. Really. He's got at least some ability to manipulate time personally. His sonic screwdriver is nothing more then an application of telekinetic ability, mind over matter fix it upper. Yes, telepathy. Or the Polyglot feat, take your pick. His insane Knowledge could be just as easily plucked from some cosmic overmind as actually being able to retain all that data. And he's definitely got some kind of temporal foresight, because somehow he always goes right to where he's needed to solve something regardless of how 'random' it appears. He's an Epic level fellow, no doubt, and probably the quintessential Outsider. His Int's probably in the 40's to 50's, Wisdom and Charisma fairly close. His regeneration ability is a Timelord characteristic...just treat it as a contingent Reincarnation. ===Aelryinth |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-15-07, 09:08 PM | Hm, true true. I hadn't considered psionics, though it does make a lot of sense. Problem being, I'm shifty about making any character psionics based since so many people consider it broken. I personally don't, but my DM doesn't have any experience with it, and I've made many a character that's been considered broken in the past. It's banned me from using any non-printed classes, and I have to check weapons and spells with the DM in detail ahead of time, explaining every possible use I could find for it. I'm the most experienced player in my group, and thus I'm not totally trusted, lol. I don't mind; it's usually extremely funny. In any case, I'd like a non-psionic idea to pair with this one, though with his lack of combat presence he might be a good way to introduce psionics to my DM.... Contingent Reincarnation...... hm, that'd work. It'd be expensive, but it'd work. |
| RadicalTaoist01-15-07, 09:11 PM | The elan race is perfect for the doctor. Immortal, looks human, and psionically inclined. Can be used fine with nonpsionic classes though, if you must. |
| FeceMan01-15-07, 09:14 PM | "You are name is Doctor who?" What. |
| Sactheminions01-15-07, 09:15 PM | Check out the Exemplar class from CAdv. He's not about broken personal abilities. Someone points a gun at him he puts his hands up. He's smart, and tricky, and has Knowledge (Any Damn Thing). Timelord should be its own race. |
| Undrhil01-15-07, 09:16 PM | Actually, I think you would need to stat out the TARDIS as well. Most of the Doctor's adventures revolve around the TARDIS taking him somewhere completely off from where he wanted to go and yet, he's where he's supposed to be. :) Also, doesn't d20 have an Immortal template or race? I think the Timelord race could be a variant of that race. I think Dr. Who is definitely easier to stat up in GURPS than in D20. Simply because GURPS has the capabilities of adding faults to the build. For Dr. Who, he has Unlimited Knowledge but it's slightly unreliable, sometimes giving him incorrect or irrelevant data. His TARDIS is a timemachine which seems to have a mind of it's own and sometimes just takes the good Doctor whereever it wants to (unless someone actively attempts to take it over like Rose did at the end of the First new season, in which case *she* became the mind of the TARDIS for all intents and purposes.) The TARDIS is also a spaceship, so it can be used in a (slightly comedic) future space campaign. Captain: "We're being followed by a what?" Helmsman: "Well, it's blue and it has a flashing blue light at the top." I agree with the sonic screwdriver: telekinetic ability, maybe treat it like a dagger or knife if used in combat. I don't think Dr. Who can manipulate time directly, not without having access to other time lords (who are all currently out of the picture due to their sacrifice at the end of the great Time War.) He can manipulate time and whatever else you can think of if he is inside his TARDIS. When he is outside of the TARDIS, treat him as a high-stat, really lucky person with lots of regeneration. If he takes enough damage to drop below 0 HP or something like Save vs. Death and fails, he "regenerates" which is basically (as was already mentioned) a reincarnation effect. Of course, this "regeneration" is not infinite. A Timelord can only regenerate 12 times in his lifetime, for a total of 13 different versions of that particular Timelord. I don't think it's ever touched upon what happens if he dies after that last regeneration, although I guess we might find out sooner or later, since we are on Dr. #12, aren't we? :-D |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-15-07, 09:20 PM | Elan's nice, but not technically immortal. Ages, but doesn't need to eat or drink, especially for the cheap 1 point a day thing. I suppose that, going Psionic, the TARDIS could essentially be a massive Psycrystal with a cloaking spell and a contingencied Nomad power or two.... I'd love that race though. Thanks for catching that Feceman. |
| BadCatMan01-15-07, 09:23 PM | Of course, it all changes depending on what regeneration you focus on, and what end of the series you look at, what you call canon, etc. And if you call an "old Time Lord trick" a racial trait or some power/feat/whatever. (Doctor Who fan for 15 years and counting...) Alignment: Varies depending on the incarnation (LN-LG, CG, LG, NG, NG, CN-CG, ??, NG, ??, CG) Race: Elan would be the closest, without making a new Time Lord race. Uses psychic power to control his body, lives "practically forever, barring accidents". And occasionally remade as a brand new person. Classes and Prestige Classes (a little bit of everything suits the Doctor quite well): Expert: skills, knowledge, gadgets Rogue: more skills, trapfinding, disable device, open lock Monk: knows unarmed combat, wears no armour Fighter: knows sword fighting, also a good fighter-type Psion: good control over body, slightly telepathic, can bluff his way past anyone, various odd tricks and escapes that could be explained with psionic powers (Psychometabolism, Telepathy, Psychoportation powers) Artificer, Psionic Artificer or Gnomish Artificer (I prefer this last one): gadget making Zerth Cenobite: time powers Sonic Screwdriver: Used to be just a simple screwdriver that was sonic, now: what the hell? "It's not a magic wand!" Languages: Provided telepathically by the TARDIS |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-15-07, 09:34 PM | Fan for!...... 2 years. I'm getting on it, I'm watching the old stuff too. :D What I can get. :banghead: Yeah, I'm working off of the newest version of the Doctor, since I've seen the most of him. I've only recently gotten addictively into it, so yeah... You may have hit the nail on the sonic head. The Screwdriver could be just that, a magic wand. Actually, it looks like one too. Easy, one down, lol. Zerth Cenobite? I'm not familiar with this. Though I'll probably take the Psionic artificer, since I'm not familiar with gnomish, but I'll look into that one. splash 2 fighter levels, maybe more depending. Not sure if this'll reach past epic, but one can hope... Psion's nomad powers, but none shoot you BACK into time. Anyone wanna take this on? I've got pausing, slowing, and hopping forward, no back.... |
| Undrhil01-15-07, 09:35 PM | Alignment: Varies depending on the incarnation (LN-LG, CG, LG, NG, NG, CN-CG, ??, NG, ??, CG) Um ... none of the Doctor's have ever been LG. LN is the closest, I think. They might have had a moment or two which seemed like LG, but each Doctor has had a moment in which is put his own regard over that of another living being, especially the Daleks ... mostly the Daleks. :) There have been others, but in every case, it's always been someone else (one of his companions usually) who stops him from going completely CE. :: Shivers :: Wow. A Chaotic Evil Doctor ... not even The Master was CE ..... That one guy ... in The Five Doctors ... um, President Barosa (sp?) ... *he* was CE. :-D |

| Flay Crimsonwind01-15-07, 09:45 PM | That by DnD philosophic arguement or the normal, real-time philosphic aruguement? If DnD, I might be able to pull that off. If you think of it more for flavor, basically, the Tardis is whatever I chose to use as a physical interpretation of the field of my teleportation spells, allowing for my allies to know exactly where it is. Like a box, marking everything in this point gets teleported; a box with permanency teleport circle under and around it. Later I might be able to enhance it to be partially sentient if not fully with it's own telepathic powers to allow every language in existence to be used by the passengers. Sweet. :D Gotta get me one of those. |
| Undrhil01-15-07, 09:52 PM | Could the TARDIS essentially be a box with a Circle of Teleportation enchanted on it? I guess not since you'd only be able to have it accept one destination at that point ... and Circle of Teleportation won't do planar shifting... I'm not sure what the DND philosophical argument about time and the planes is. But isn't there a Plane of Time or something similar? Or am I confusing D&D with EQ again? :-D I think the TARDIS could be an enchanted, enlarged Bag (Box) of Holding. There is a control center built into the inside which can directly manipulate the outside (allowing it to "launch" as a spaceship.) Or, maybe it's some kind of Leomund's Secure Shelter (or whatever that item is that produces one ... something or other Fortress?) with capabilities far beyond those of normal ... whatever they're calleds! :-D |
| BadCatMan01-15-07, 10:32 PM | Um ... none of the Doctor's have ever been LG. :-D I listed those alignments in order, so I had LG for Hartnell's 1st Doctor and Pertwee's 3rd Doctor. It was a bit of stretch though. The First Doctor, right at the beginning, was probably Neutral, possibly even with some Evil tendencies. Colin Baker's 6th Doctor had a bit of CE in his initial madness. Borusa? CE? Never! He just sought his own power, and didn't cause a lot of chaos to get it. NE or LE. It's even possible he did it with the intention of helping Gallifrey, by being the best Lord President forever. Zerth Cenobite is a time-hopping monk PrC from Complete Psionic. Gnomish Artificer is from Magic Of Faerun. I can't recall if the abilities of ZC specifically resemble the Doctor though. One thing is that the Doctor is not uber-powerful, hence the many class dips and lack of optimisation. He solves problems through wits, luck and knowledge, not raw power. Time travel and the TARDIS is really only used for getting the Doctor and co to and from their adventurers. The Doctor rarely time travels to solve a problem. It's a lot more like the DM (here's your next adventure!) than a tool of the Doctor's (it's also a home, and source of equipment and gadgets however). |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-15-07, 10:37 PM | So a box of holding, allowing for someone to place a Daern's Instant Fortress at the very mouth of it? That'd definetly be some trippy space/time stuff. And a box of holding shouldn't be much more expensive than a normal bag of the same name. It'd work. It'd also lock out anything but the controller, in this case the one with the key. It'd so far be 55,000 (fortress) + the bag of holding. How much does a 20ft square base x 30 ft high tower weigh? God knows. But I'm sure you could just get a smaller fortress, making it maybe a 20k bag? So around 75k, non teleporting intelligent goodness. Sounds right. For intelligence, just make it's core a psionic golem with a helm of telepathy or something. Not quite flavored right, but the effect is quite similar. Maybe? Then the doctor, an Elan Psion/Artificer with some hellish luck bonuses and a key to said Tardis plus a magic wand of different abilities (for the newest version, upgraded model!), who occassionally needs a......... right, ressurection not quite taken care of. Well, almost there guys! Fret not! We just need a way for his body to allow for True Ressurection even after old age takes him...... and a younger body...... maybe clone + that ointment that turns dead tissue into non rotting/aging tissue. Might that work with the clone as a young body regeneration idea? And I've gotta figure out how to balance these levels effectively, heheheh. So TWO problems to overcome: Tardis and The Doctor. The Doctor: Elan for bodily control, ressurection unknown Rogue (for all the skills), Psion (he is a natural telepath, and has some funky abilities), Monk (he is an expert at armed and unarmed combat, if mainly in the older versions). Tardis: The box and the heart Box of Holding with a Daern's instant fortress caught up in the mouth. The heart of the Tardis is some sort of telepathic lifeform/creation that has the ability to respond to the doctor's controls, allowing for Teleportation over space and time. |
| Mr_Teapot01-16-07, 07:15 PM | Dude, the Doctor is a Jade Phoenix Mage. Eternally reincarnating dogooder devoted to fighting evil? Check. Variety of unusual abilities? Check. A Swordsage/wizard/JPM would play out much like the proposed monk/fighter/psion/expert/rogue/artificer, but could actually be effective. |
| jameswilliamogle01-16-07, 07:17 PM | Death Delver get 9 lives at the end of their progression... not a very fitting class, except for that. |
| aelryinth01-16-07, 08:42 PM | Aye, the TARDIS is simply a 'plot vehicle' to the next story, exactly like a Stargate, Warp Drive/5 year missions, a Portal from Sigil, or a Spelljammer vessel. Same thing. Springboard to adventure! ==Aelryinth |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-16-07, 08:45 PM | Um, I was turned to a PrC Gatecrasher, from manual of the Planes. Sounds vaguely like it, but I dunno if it's 3.5 or what. Anyone know of the addition? Doesn't the Jade phoenix burst into flame and reform as a healed version of himself? It's a good revive, not quite a reborn effect. He turns young, for those who are unawares. I have an idea, which ties into the psionics path we've taken. Assuming he creates things psionicly, he might just need hellish craft skills to make his stuff, since that's really what it is; drawing on outside knowledge and making stuff physically. Yes, any can do it right, whilst artificers do it better, but there's something that intrigued me, if you could go mainly Psion. Astral Seed. Obvious, save for it doesn't state that it makes you a YOUNG body. It just has you form one like when you died. Now, one could argue that since the word "perish" comes into play, you could form in your ten days a younger version of yourself, but I dun like to have to argue that much with the DM, or try and convince him I'm right. Instead, when young, pay for a clone, as the spell, so you can immediately transfer to your young body when you die. Keep it in the Tardis next to the heart of the Tardis and you've got a safe (more or less) set body for death. Alternatively, just form in another body and get it to be polymorphed with a permanency spell, though this doesn't restore your used years, so you'd still die naturally. I like the seed + clone idea. Any thoughts? And this is actually a PC, not an NPC. This is why it's so suicidally hard. I need the tardis for this guy. It's somewhat on a challenge from my DM now, who's newest dare for e is that it can't be done without major rules bending. He's even willing to keep it into epic and transfer into a semi-modern campaign if I can pull it off. So assuming he wont die before he can utilize 8th level manifests, he should be fine. And, if this is the path, hy not make the heart of the Tardis like a psycrystal? And this'll pretty much just be used for transport, yes. Like a part-sized mount. :P |
| BadCatMan01-16-07, 09:24 PM | Doesn't the Jade phoenix burst into flame and reform as a healed version of himself? It's a good revive, not quite a reborn effect. He turns young, for those who are unawares. Actually, he turns into a completely new and different person, sometimes even older, though there has been a steady progression to younger actors. If I made a Time Lord race, I'd give it contingent Raise Dead x12 with the added option of making an entirely new character, only roughly along the lines of the old. I have an idea, which ties into the psionics path we've taken. Assuming he creates things psionicly, No, not at all. That's why I suggested Gnomish Artificer, who makes non-magical items. Though if you're only loosely inspired, it's not a worry. Any thoughts? I have a theory that the next Time Lord is slowly grown within that Time Lord's mind. If he survives too long, it escapes and pressures the current Time Lord to move on. This is my explanation for when the Doctor was haunted by the Watcher, a ghost of his future self in Logopolis Mmm, I just saw the Doctor do a "Jedi mind trick" last night. Definitely Psion. |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-16-07, 09:38 PM | Well, going by your theory, then it flavors out to make sense. True he can't make things psionicly; I'm tired and typed wrong. I meant that he uses psionics as the mechanic for his sonic screwdriver, which I figured could, with the newest version, just be a Dorje with a couple of powers. If you go by the early doctors, it's basically just a handheld craft kit, so probably masterwork. :P If I'm gonna go psionic anyway though, I'd just as soon take the psionics to make stuff, and go artificer into epic once I get the 15 levels of artificer. So far, pre epic, he looks like this: Psion 15 / Artificer 5 (in pretty much that order since it's a race to gain his immortality. He's not lawful (well, my Doctor isn't), so monk isn't viable, though Chaos monk might be good. I'd just as soon take Superior Unarmed Strike and Imp. Natural (unarmed) to make up his fighting prowess and fill a few feats as spend precious levels on martial artist classes. Into epic, I'd give him maybe another 5 Artificer with god knows what. Probably I'll go gnomish artificer, but I need the book first T_T So off to Borders I go (over the weekend), and by then It'll be done. I'm itching to finish sooner, but noone I know has the book, so patience, an anti-virtue, rests upon me. Is magic of Faerun worth owning, really? |
| skydragonknight01-16-07, 10:25 PM | The Tardis is a Pocket Dimension created by the Genesis spell. If you can specify the Time Trait to: "mobile"(with DM permission) you could have a time travelling plane. The Doctor also needs a Gate Key, perhaps slightly altered so that it only only connects to the TARDIS plane and from the inside can change where the "entrance" to the TARDIS is...or maybe a Cubic Gate(or whatever it's called) with infinite uses, shaped like a police call booth? |
| BadCatMan01-16-07, 10:35 PM | As a conservative oldschool fan, I bristle at some of this. Nevermind, carry on. :) MoF is 3rd edition and FR-specific, so your usage of it is tricky to guess at. I don't know enough about high-level magic and powers to design the TARDIS, but the old girl is sentient, alive, a mobile pocket universe, able to travel anywhere and anywhen, and in any plane* (actually maybe not, its kind of tricky). I'd possibly give it a Divine Rank just to be sure. :D |
| Undrhil01-16-07, 11:02 PM | I think we have hit the proverbial nail on the head for the TARDIS. A box of holding with an Instant Fortress built inside it (of course, the instant fortress might not be quite large enough to cover how large the TARDIS is supposed to be inside) and with a telepathic psicrystal controlling it. The box of holding is physically bound to the fortress from the outside, and the psicrystal can move the fortress from the inside, so the psicrystal can move the box of holding. Now, figure out how the psicrystal can travel through space/time and you've got a winner! :) |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-16-07, 11:13 PM | Done. It can, at level fifteen, when we pretty much have the doctor, and can assume we have him after his training, manifest as it's master. Make sure that he (the doctor) knows Teleport, and as the crystal is connected to the TARDIS box, it is in contact with everyone inside the pocket universe, physically and otherwise, and thus it automatically takes them along as per the rules for bringing people along with onesself as you teleport. The same applies for any other nomad manifests that use time instead of space. Wow, nicely done; we're the first to finish discussion of the TARDIS. As far as google search indicates, heheheh. Good job all! Now, what have we left for the Doctor?...... |
| Endarire01-16-07, 11:14 PM | I vote TARDIS is an intelligent item or creature, perhaps a living vault (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/livingVault.htm). -EE |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-16-07, 11:28 PM | Wow, like the living vault. It can, essentially, transport others inside it with it's plane shift spell right? If so, it's another great alternative for the TARDIS. |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-17-07, 01:39 AM | Well, while essentially very little stuff, this is the first thread findable to finish making the Doctor and the TARDIS. Thanks to a bunch of people, whom I couldn't have done it properly without, it's finished. ENJOY!!! :D |
| DracoPhoenix01-18-07, 06:06 PM | Nice job, I think I messed about with specc'ing the TARDIS myself at one point, had polymorph any object, a demi plane for the internal space and cloud mind, massive IIRC. Don't think I ever thought about the control system on it though. Psycrystal sounds perfect. One problem. No Leadership feat. He's seldom without some companion of one sort or another, and as one epsiode showed, he has also drawn some followers of some description. :) |
| BadCatMan01-18-07, 07:21 PM | Legion of fans? Thrallherd. :D |
| Flay Crimsonwind01-19-07, 12:12 AM | Yeah, I just sort of assumed that the followers would be the rest of the party, but seeing as feats are a go-ahead for whichever fan is playing him. Leadership'd be interesting, though I still kinda think that they're more the other players. Whatever floats your TARDIS. :P Oh yeah, he does have some followers, dun he? Well, lv 6 feat, filled. :D |
