Yesterday, my dwarf cleric was killed by a Forgepriest Firegiant. I was pretty sad, and dont really wanna revive him...

So i proposed my DM to let me play an angel, and for some reason that he knows and i shouldnt, he happily agreed.

Now,

I wanted to play the monster class at the end of Savage Species "Astral Deva", which is the lesser angel from the Monster Manual.
(Reference to Savage Species. Pg:155)

The character sounds quite cool. I'd be starting at 9th level.

One thing that bothers me is that minor globe of invulnerability he can activate.
He has this "protective aura" that functions as both a magic circle against evil (i like) and a minor globe of invulnerability (bad for ally spells).

I guess I could just switch it off as it is a free action to put it back up.

Also,
At 9th level i'd get 5 feats to use. 3 from the monstrous class and 2 from flaws.

I was planning on using 2 already
Leadership: so as to get a cleric to replace my dead dwarf.
Light armor profficency: to get a +1 mithral shirt of fortification (medium) [my DM rolls 20s as much as he breathes, thats how my past char died...]

Any suggestions on the rest. I was going for power attack since my attack bonus would be thru the roof with this guy.
He gets a free polymorph spell by 10th level (in 1 level for me)

thx

Unless your playing a 3.0 game this wont pan out right, and the Ghaele Eladrin is actually stronger than the Astral Deva and they have that whole Celestial thing going to. Prehapes you should reconsider your choice of celestial.

If you are playing 3.5 you should know the spell-like abilities of the Astral Deva are slightly different than listed in the Savage Species, particularly they now have Planeshift as a spell-like ability which means you'll probably have to fit it into the progression somewhere.

You should know that they forgot to put +8 dex in the progression table in savage species. If you are playing 3.5 you will have to ajust damage reduction, imunities and energie resistances as well.

I hope this helps a bit

If you plan on wearing an mythril chain shirt you don`t need to take a feat for armor proficiecy, because the armor check penalty is 0.

I second the Ghaele Eladrin.

You dont go as far as shooting lightning out of your buttocks, but you got the laser from eyes thing covered. =P

Actually playing either the Ghaele or the Astral Deva (or Trumpet Archon for that matter) is a fairly bad idea. I did this same thing a few months ago and quickly came to realize that at lower levels you're VERY powerful but, anything past 10 you really start going downhill and getting passed up by clerics and even favored souls of equal level.

If it were up to me, I'd drop the whole idea and focus on a divine caster (cleric/favored soul) going into Contemplative or Celestial Mystic. It's up to you and, if you're REALLY determined for an actual "angel" then go with Ghaele. They have the spellcasting which puts them past the Astral Deva any day.

Protectar is the lowest level angelic creature I could find in my books. It's from Miniatures Handbook, and has 2 racial HD and +3 LA. It doesn't have much as SA and SQ (only two spell like abilities), but it does have flight, +4 Str, +2 Dex, +4 Con, +2 Wis and +4 Cha.

I like the idea of playing a ghaele character. CLW and Aid as SLAs/at will just seem too cool, not to mention the sheer array of special abilities you get. I suppose you will be taking up a clerical archer sort of support role. Stick in the middle of the party so everyone benefits from your aura, stick to ranged with your very-effective eye rays to make up for your lack of HD, and support with your SLAs/at will and limited spellcasting.

Rapid shot might be worth it here for squeezing out that extra eye ray, as is haste.

Also note that you can advance the Protectars up to 6 HD. They then become large sized. Also, with such a measly LA, you can actually buy it off. Might not be a bad idea but, they're not technically Angels.

6HD Protectar is large size with a +3 LA (assuming no change) and 6 outsider HD. Not bad IYAM. That's just right for a PrC that grants spellcasting. Perhaps something like a Vassal of Bahamut.
