06-29-05, 08:47 AM you can chose an optimal one (see the druid handbook) but there are quite strict rules about them otherwise.
you can improve it via feats (exalted companion) or with your buff-spells (animal growth, magic fang etc)

06-29-05, 08:58 AM Theres plenty of buff spells out there you can use on your companion, and at slightly higher levels you can get some very powerful companions.
Other than that, a one level dip into Beastmaster (CV I think) is handy, as is the Arcane Heirophant PrC (RotW)
