| Saxis08-15-05, 12:16 PM | So my MiniHB Healer dies last week in the first round of meeting Mr. Beholder. I can't really complain too much, the DM rolled randomly to see who got hit by which eyestalk, and 1 person in our party got targeted with 3 stalks.. but needless to say, I was the lucky one who got FoD. I had about a 30% chance to pass, rolled a 5. Now we do have a Favored Soul in the group, and I think with his healing and some minor healing from a Druid, we should do OK. We use the Bloodlines from UA, each character must select a major bloodline. I'm taking Celestial. I also read somewhere in one of the many Druid posts about feats you can take to add the Celestial template to any of your Druid forms and it just rubbed me right... This is exactly what I want to do! I start at 13th, which will include 3 levels of Bloodline, so 10 levels of Druid. Unfortunately, we don't have any of the "...of the Wild" books, but everything else is OK. I am hoping that these feats are not in a book we don't have! I want primarily combat/healing Druid. I'm shooting for Druid 10/CB 3 (CB = Celestial Bloodline) I've got good Stats: Str 12, Dex 10, Con 16, Int 14, Wis 18, Cha 11 I'm considering throwing in 1 level of Fighter for heavy armor prof, an extra feat and wear some Wild Dragonhide Full plate... If needed I can switch some stats around for more strength to actually carry it while not shifted. Not to start another argument, but what is the general consensus on wearing a monk's belt and wild armor while shifted? I probably have to read the wild properties, but no books in front of me... Does wild armor form to your new shape, or does it still meld into your form?? As far a feats, I want Natural Spell for sure, and I think it takes 2 feats to be able to add the Celestial template. I may also add Magic of the Land just because I will be a secondary healer with plenty of Knowledge (nature). I'm thinking a Celestial Brown Bear would be just gravy in combat... ;) Anything else I should be looking at? |
| Saxis08-15-05, 12:22 PM | After reading over the Celestial Template a bit, I decided that this may not help me too much, as I get alot of the same abilities through my bloodline. Any other templates that can be added like this? 1 more question. If I shape into bear form, cast GM Fang and then have a Wiz cast permanancy, what happens when I shape back into my original form? Do I lose the GMF until I shape back into bear form? Does GMF apply to other forms as well, as long as they have the same attack type (claw, bite)?? |
| Sang-Drax08-15-05, 04:05 PM | I gues it's reasonable to assume that you cast GMF on your hands and mouth, and it still works when you assume a claw/claw/bite form. It would be rather strange if you needed a tail attack, though... is Permanency a touch spell? I'm glad you gave up the Celestial Wild Shape thing. Considering that the celestial template adds the magical beast type, your animal buffs will not work on yourself. Don't take the fighter level! There are some that argue that when you wild shape, it's not relevant if you're proficient with your wild armor or not... you may want to ask your DM first. Anyway, even if he doesn't let you wear a heavy wild armor withouit taking the usual non-proficiency penalty, I highly disencourage the fighter level. I little bit more of AC due to heavy armor is not the least worth the loss of a caster level, wild shape, and even skills! For more information, check out the 3.5 Druid Handbook link under my sig. |
| Saxis08-15-05, 04:37 PM | Ah-ha! Thanks Sang for the reply. And mentioning the Heavy armor proficiency... I forgot that not being proficient in heavy armor when wildshaped doesn't matter. Since Armor check penalty doesn't apply while wildshaped, there would be no negatives to take! I still just may take the Heavy Prof feat as I may need to spend some considerable time outside of wild shape. I've looked over the Druid handbook several times and the amount of info is almost overwhelming. I really need help on feats to take as a combat druid. So far I'm looking at: Spontaneous Healer, Heavy Armor Prof Extend Spell Natural Spell Multi-attack? Imp Multi-attack? Is it possible to take Multiattack and Imp Multiattack as a Druid? [Edit: I decided to drop Magic of the Land and Combat Reflexes that I was going to take originally.] |

I would say that in human form, I'm just not proficient in using my "natural" weapons, and just not be able to use them at all. Also, I guess Permanency would be considered touch. Under the GMF description, it specifically states that it can be made permanent, and it is also listed under Permanency spell's table for XP cost. I would wait until I could cast the +5 version of my GMF and probably buy a scroll for our Wiz to cast... (I'm sure he doesn't have it...) I would need either 3 scrolls, or have the Wiz take a 1500 XP hit per casting. (Our Wiz is a henchman, who cares... ) The SRD reads: "In addition to personal use, permanency can be used to make the following spells permanent on yourself, another creature, or an object (as appropriate)." GMF is one of the spells listed. |

[Edit: I decided to drop Magic of the Land and Combat Reflexes that I was going to take originally.] I would drop Spontaneous Healing. (A cleric is better at it -- his spells heal more, since druids lag cleric healing, and he doesn't need a feat.) Choose the Vigor spells if you must heal. They are best post-combat, but Fast Healing 3 is a decent mid-level spell. Your "healing" focus should be having enough CON to survive the fight. Ioun stone of +CON works in wild shape too. Tendriculos = CON22 to start. Remember, you also heal a day's worth of HP each time you wildshape. Take a Periapt of Wound Closure and you heal 2x with each wildshape. In that vein, take Quicken Wildshape, which lets you WS as a move. Then, in a pinch, you can WS 2x a round and get back 4x your level in HP. This can be much more valuable if your DM is sensible and houserules a better daily healing rate. Regardless, if you like versatility, I would say Quicken WS again, because it lets you cast & WS in the same round. |
| Funny Slaughter08-16-05, 09:46 AM | a druid can heal very well. either via regeneration-spells (apply them before combat and you are golden) or via summoning. unicorns are really cool. 1 CMW, 3 CLW, and after this you can still use them as meatshields. gs Funny |
| Saxis08-16-05, 12:29 PM | Vigor is handy and all, but just not good enough for a PARTY healer. A 5th level spell for 25 hp is a waste. This is making Magic of the Land sound more enticing. Sure, if I was solo, I could probably get by on my wildshape healing and a Vigor spell, but I'm not. This Druid is trying to replace my miniHB Healer, who's mass cure lights healed a d8+28 at lvl 12, and he often ran out of spells every day. We also have a Favored Soul, who never cast a healing spell because he didn't need to. I don't want to mem all healing spells, not knowing what I'll need, so this makes Spontaneous Healing very useful. Anything about being able to take Multi-attack as a Druid?? |
| Saxis08-16-05, 05:00 PM | After looking at my spell list and some of the truly amazing combat Druid spells out there, I've now decided to drop some of that healing and focus more on combat spells... like Superior Magic Fang... making all my natural attacks +4 weapons... I'm also taking some Align Fang and Silvered Fang, as we fight alot of creatures that have some form of DR. I'm guessing with Animal Growth and Superior Magic Fang, battles won't last more than a couple rounds! :D This will at least let me drop spontaneous healing for fast wildshape as you suggested (Thanks btw!) I don't suppose Magic of the Land works with vigor spells?? If not, I'll most likely be dropping that as well, and adding Imp Multi-attack... |
