| Zaxter02-27-06, 11:43 AM | I'm entering a character into a PvP game, the "Dungeon Wrestling Federation". Characters are judged on how high their grapple check is, how much damage they do with a successful grapple check, and how good they are at resisting grapples. Here's my build, tell me what you think. (House rule: stats are rolled, and lowest roll is turned into an 18) Half-Orc Psychic Warrior 8/Barbarian 2/Slayer 10 (BAB +18, ML 18) Stats: 18+2 (racial)+5 (levels)+5 (tome)+6 (belt) = 36 str 16 dex 16 con 13-2 (racial) = 11 int 17+5 (tome)+6 (periapt) = 28 wis 11-2 (racial) = 9 cha 1 - PsyWarrior1: Track, (Improved Unarmed Strike) 2 - PsyWarrior2: (Improved Grapple) 3 - PsyWarrior3: Overchannel 4 - PsyWarrior4 5 - PsyWarrior5: (Weapon Focus (Grapple)) 6 - PsyWarrior6: Psionic Meditation 7 - PsyWarrior7 8 - PsyWarrior8: (Talented) 9 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian1: Improved Initiative, Rage 1/day, Fast Movement 10 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2: Uncanny Dodge 11 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer1: Favored Enemy (Illithid) +2, Enemy Sense 12 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer2: Extend Power, Brain Nausea 13 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer3: Lucid Buffer 14 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer4: Favored Enemy (Illithid) +4 15 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer5: Shape Soulmeld (Girallion Arms) 16 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer6: Cerebral Blind 17 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer7: Favored Enemy (Illithid) +6 18 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer8: Oper Lesser Chakra (Arms), Breach Power Resistance 19 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer9: Cerebral Immunity 20 - Psywarrior8/Barbarian2/Slayer10: Blast Feedback, Favored Enemy (Illithid) +8 Claws of the Beast Expansion Grip of Iron Vigor Body Adjustment Body Purification Hustle Strength of My Enemy Claws of the Vampire Duodimensional Claw Hostile Empathic Transfer Energy Adaptation Psionic Freedom of Movement Oak Body Psychofeedback Breath of the Black Dragon Form of Doom Items: +5 Spiked Mithral Breastplate of Etherealness (78,050 GP) +1 Last Resort Armor Spikes (8,000 GP) Belt of Giant Strength +6 (32,000 GP) Periapt of Wisdom +6 (32,000 GP) Manual of Gainful Exercise +5 (137,500 GP) Tome of Understanding +4 (110,000 GP) Round 1) Activate the Etherealness power of the armor. The Etherealness enhancement specifically says that he can remain that way as long as he wants. Expend psionic focus to use Overchannel+Talented to manifest Claws of the Beast to its maximum power. He now have 2 claws that deal 5d6 damage each that last for almost an entire day. Use a move action to gain psionic focus. Total PP used: 19 Round 2) Manifest Expansion, augmented to increase two size categories and to last 10 min./level. He now has +4 to strength, as well as another +8 size bonus to grapple checks for a few hours. Not to mention that his claws are now dealing 7d6 damage each. Total PP used: 28 Round 3) Manifest Duodimensional Claw. Total PP used: 33 Round 4) Expend psionic focus, and manifest an extended Form of Doom for a +4 unnamed bonus to strength and 4 tentacle attacks. Use the remaining move action to regain PF. Total PP used: 46 Round 5) Expend psionic focus, and manifest an extended Claws of the Vampire. Regain PF. Total PP used: 53 Round 6) Expend psionic focus, and manifest an extended and overchanneled (+2 ML) Grip of Iron, augmented to its maximum extent (taking 2d8 damage). Regain PF. Total PP used: 62 Round 7) Expend psionic focus one last time, and manifest an extended + overchanneled (+3 ML) Psychofeedback, sucking a total of 20 points out of dexterity/wisdom/intelligence/charisma and putting it into strength (while taking 3d8 damage). Total PP used: 73 Round 8) Return to the material plane, rage, and rip the opponent's head off. In the end, this nets a grapple check of 18(BAB)+13(strength)+4(Improved Grapple)+10 (expansion)+2 (Form of doom)+12 (Grip of Iron)+10(Psychofeedback)+2 (rage)+2(Girallion Arms)+2(Open Lesser Chakra) = +65, with the following damage figures: Attack bouns = 18(BAB)+13 (strength)+2(Form of doom)+10(Psychofeedback)+2(rage) = +45 2 Huge Claws (+45/+45, 19-20 x2): 7d6+31 damage each, healing half of the base damage with each attack. Hitting with both deals an extra 14d6+61 damage thanks to his Girallion Arms soulmeld. :ayyyy!: 4 Huge Tentacles (+40/+40/+40/+40): 4d8+15 damage each, assuming they are used as secondary attacks. +1 Huge Armor Spikes (+40): 3d6+16 damage As far as escaping a grapple goes, he only needs to make sure that his wisdom wasn't burned lower than 14, and he can make a concentration check to manifest Psionic Freedom of Movement to get out with ease. Quick recap: Grapple check: +65 Attack bouns: +45 Damage: 2 7d6+31 claws, 4 4d8+15 tentacles, and 3d6+16 armor spikes (Average total damage if everything miraculously hits : 379.5) So, how does this build look? Any suggestions? What the hell am I saying, of course there will be suggestions...This is the CO board! *Ahem* Anyway, let me know what I can do to make this character more optimized, since I'm sure there's still room for improvement. |
| dougemes02-27-06, 05:25 PM | I "competed" in some 3.0 DnD toughman tourney's if you will. I'm afraid your character will be significantly hosed by an antimagic field. You might want to consider how many of those bonuses drop in such a situation, and then figure out how you would get rid of it. Note from the SRD "dispel magic does not remove the field." |
| Rhonin the Big02-27-06, 09:09 PM | Good idea, I'll give my build a ring of spellstoring with antimagic field in it. I have a grapple build I want to show off too. Goliath Barbarian9/reaping mauler5/frostrager5. Feats he has are Frozen Berserker, Power Attack, Improved Unarmed Strike, clever wrestling (good thing your psionic grappler is huge!), close-quarters combat, combat reflexes and instant rage (combined with racial-substitution levels thats 2 attacks of opportunity before the grappling even begins!) His only weapons are a pair of +5 furious, icy burst, parrying, last resort, initiative gauntlets. His strength is like this: 18 base +4 goliath +8 rage +6 belt of str +5 tome +5 levels =46 strength while raging (which is 16 rounds, longer than your buffs last) His grapple bonus is +52, but he will be tough to pin down! A huge creature would give me +2 on opposing grapple checks due to clever wrestling, and when you grapple, thanks to the one-two-punch + rend I add the damage done from 2 unarmed strikes + rend damage to escape your grapple! Or if all else fails I'll just buy a ring of freedom of movement for 5,600gp. Now, you do outdamage me, but if I keep you pinned for 1 round you have to save or be stunned for 1d3 rounds due to sleeper lock, 3 rounds and you gotta save or die! :w00t: :bump: He happens to be participating in my fight club! |
| PhaedrusXY02-27-06, 09:28 PM | Here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=434663) is a grappling thread that might have something useful to you in it (especially the items, etc). |
| Enamel_3202-27-06, 09:30 PM | I have a feeling that the primeval would make a good component to a grappling build, due to the large strength bonuses the class gives. Dire ape looks good. |

Note from the SRD "dispel magic does not remove the field."Hm, you have a good point. Antimagic would be this guy's downfall. I will have to figure out a way around that. =46 strength while raging (which is 16 rounds, longer than your buffs last)Um, no...It isn't. My character's manifester level is 17. Thus, the shortest amount of time that any of my buffs could last would be 17 rounds. Also, it would seem that you skipped right over the fact that I used Extend Power on all of the powers whose durations were measured in rounds/level. Therefore, I could just wait on the ethereal plane while your rage dies off, come back, and attack you while you're completely vulnerable, whereas I am fully buffed.Good idea, I'll give my build a ring of spellstoring with antimagic field in it.NO METAGAMING! If we could, I would just use a Master of Many Forms and turn into an Ocean Giant (MMII). They're immune to both cold damage and bludgeoning damage, virtually nullifying your build. It's a big game of D&D rock, paper, scissors. There's always a build to beat another (unless you're using something like Pun-Pun or the Cheater of Mystra, or one of those broken things)I have a feeling that the primeval would make a good component to a grappling build, due to the large strength bonuses the class gives. Dire ape looks good. What book is primeval from? |
| Enamel_3202-27-06, 09:47 PM | It's from Frostburn, my bad. |
| VanRiper02-28-06, 12:46 PM | +1 Last Resort Armor Spikes (8,000 GP) Where is "Last Resort" from? |
| Zaxter02-28-06, 08:54 PM | Complete Warrior. It allows you to negate the -4 penalty on attack rolls for using the weapon in a grapple (+1 enhancement). |
