This gets you Arcane Resistance and Mettle as well as boosting your will save. Instead of Fullblade, you should really consider using the Spiked Chain. Or a reach weapon you can trip with plus armor spikes. It does you no good to threaten a caster if all they have to do is take a 5-ft step to cast. You should go Human instead of Half-orc. And switch your Cha and Wis scores. You definitely want to pick up Mage Slayer. The other feats in that line are useful as well, but not as useful as Mage Slayer. |
| Satori11-22-05, 05:38 PM | Here's an idea. Bear with me. Background: The hero was raised within a special monastic order devoted to the destruction of spellcasters. They think magic is evil. However, the monastery was destroyed by spellcasters in an epic battle of spellslinging and clashing blades. A BBEG caused the final destruction by unleashing a hellish portal of utter destruction that sucked in the souls of nearly everyone present. Everyone at the monastery died...except the hero. Now, the hero is fanatical in his pursuit of arcane casters. He has even strayed from the path of "Monk-dom" in an effort to turn himself into the most lethal mage killer in existence...meanwhile, he feels demonic energies bubbling from within him as a result of surviving the hellish portal that destroyed his monastery. Mechanics: Monk 6/HexBlade 3/Fighter 6/Occult Slayer 5 Why: -Multiple class dips increase saving throws -Monk 6 combined with "Serpent Style" from Eberron creates a very versatile mage killer. -HexBlade 3 gets Mettle and improved Saves. -Fighter 6 nets a good amount of extra feats, which will be HUGE in creating an adequate "Non Mage Anti-Mage". What we end up with: -A hero with 18 BAB -Improved Flurry with a Long Spear...which means Mage Slayer is HUGE, and unarmed attacks are available for those pesky foes that close the distance. -IUS, Improved Grapple/Stunning Fist (either work, but Stunning DC will suck), Combat Reflexes, and Improved Trip from Monk levels. -Huge Saves -Tons of feats -Move Speed of 50' -Evasion and Mettle -All the fun Occult Slayer stuff. I think there are alignment clashes, so make sure you get Monk 6 before PrClassing. The Mage Slayer feats (CA)are required, as is Serpent Style from Eberron. I'd also recommend Dodge/Mobility/Spring Attack to easily penetrate and threaten well-guarded casters, and I'd pick up Luck of Heroes (+1 all saves, but can only be taken at 1st level) and Great Fortitude, Lightning Reflexes, and Iron Will. ---Basically, the hero runs in superfast and immediately begins threatening the Mage up close...with perhaps a Stunning Fist attempt thrown in. He then continually follows and harasses the mage, relying on his ability to negate saving throw based spells and speed to survive while he cranks out Long Spear damage. Continual tripping ensures difficulty in casting, and monk unarmed ability means the hero is deadly at all ranges. The best part is that not only is this build pretty effective at destroying mages, but it will actually fly with a DM concerned with RP and believability! The class progression makes perfect sense, and even justifies the HexBlade dip (Infernal energies from the hellish portal awakening). I've been waiting for a campaign that needed a hero like this...but a pure mage slayer is only really needed in a group that has all the bases covered. Have fun! |
| onlybrownguy11-22-05, 10:02 PM | the magebane enhancement is a must have especially for you occult slayer focused weapon, buy some sr armor. here is another possible route instead of fighter but being a grappler style monk with mage slayer, all perfect saves excellent damage and if you take monastatic training you can go occult slayer and not worry about not continuing in monk. If your doing occuly slayer simple for the 5th level ability i suggest purchase a ring of mental fortitude (DMG 2) |
| PhaedrusXY11-22-05, 11:14 PM | There is a link in my sig to a Mage Slayer thread (which has links inside it to older mage slaying threads...). |
| Seadrik11-24-05, 11:17 AM | Mechanics: Monk 6/HexBlade 3/Fighter 6/Occult Slayer 5 And Shou Disciple (UE) levels instead of the fighter levels?? |
| Xeraph11-24-05, 06:34 PM | I had a build laying around that used Shiba Protector, Despot, Monk, Deepwarden, Pious Templar and Serenity Feat. It was solely Wisdom Constitution dependent at had insane saves especially aganst Spells. Very effective. It had SR, Wis to saves, mettle, evasion, Wis to damage, Wis to hit, Con to AC insane saves and such. Did i mention the saves? They where insane! |
