My current character is a NE Half-Elf Sorcerer. I need him to take Assassin levels, but I also need a progression that gives him enough Caster Level to cast 9th-level spells. Anyone know something? Side note: My DM house-ruled that anyone with human blood could take the Able Learner feat, and I took it.

Stats? Feats? (Besides Able Learner)? Books Allowed?

And most importantly, why do you "need" to take assassin levels? A high-level caster is a far better assassin than any Masked-Villian-With-A-Posioned-Blade could ever be. Scry, Teleport, Heightened Disintegrate, Teleport, job done.

Also, a Sorceror (high Charisma) would seem to have poor synergy with a DMG Assassin (requires both high Int. and high class level to have any decent death attack).

So why are you bothering?

A sorceror is already 1 level behind other primary spellcasters such as Wizards, Druids, and Clerics. Adding levels of Assassin plus some auxiliary levels that allow access into Sorceror would just plain make your character suck. And that's no good.

Keep in mind too, that the Assassin PrC is generally considered to be one of the worst PrC's to take dip levels in (a full 10 levels for a high-INT character is the only person that should be taking Assassin PrC levels). It's a horrible PrC that really weakens most characters.

That being said, I suggest you move from Sorceror levels to a full spellcaster level progression Sorceror PrC as soon as possible. Chose stealth-&-sneaky spells to augment your killing spells - and you will have a Sorceror with an Assassin flavor. Avoid Assassin levels like the plague.

It's really crucial for you to enjoy the full benefits of a Sorceror's schtick by ensuring that your spellcaster levels is at its highest at all times. Even a 1 level hit to spellcaster progression will make your Sorceror pretty sorry in comparison to his adventuring mates and his opposition

You can get Hide and Move Silently by taking levels in Shadowcrafter (Underdark). Its quite good, by giving you improved Shadow Conjuration/Evocations & Shades. The Shadow spells in particular are excellent spells for a Sorcerer to have because they can emulate an entire school of spells. Doing more with less is what the sorcerer is all about, I feel.

I guess he doesn't need to be an Assassin.

He's only 1st-level, for the purpose of feats and skills. But is there anything else good? I can get most books, short of the BoVD and BoED.

While everything else makes good sense in your post, 3 levels of Assassin gets you 2nd level spontaneous arcane, uncanny dodge, poison use, +2d6 Sneak - very useful things in a lot of Rogue builds.

Particularly because most of the Complete Adventurer PrCs don't give uncanny dodge as an option and there's a lot of pressure from a CO standpoint to keep the number of Rogue levels to 3 as opposed to 4.

It also isn't that difficult to get it up to 3rd level arcane, opening up a whole range of choices.

Keep in mind too, that the Assassin PrC is generally considered to be one of the worst PrC's to take dip levels in (a full 10 levels for a high-INT character is the only person that should be taking Assassin PrC levels). It's a horrible PrC that really weakens most characters.
