What ways are there to make it more difficult for the enemy to de buff your group. I don't want dispel magic ruining all my buffs.

boosting your caster level allways works as well as casting spells surounded by an antimagic field. theres some shadow magic feats in forgotten realsm that also help as well.

Theres also a weapon enhancement called Spellblade. For a little +1 bonus, you are rendered completely unaffected by a spell of your choice... like Greater Dispel Magic.

It doesn't work on the area version, but it's freaking *mean* if they try to target you with one.

Why wouldn't an enemy mage use area dispel against a group of buffed-up party members?

There are 2 types of characters that can do this:

1. Psion
with the abilities Synchonicity + Anticipatory strike

2. Mage counterspeller
with the appropriate feats to counterspell (throw in a high enough IOSV PrC and you can defend areas especially with reactive warding to block spells and line of sight)

There are also items that can do the job:
1. Ring of spellbattle - counter spell once per day (i think...)
2. Ring of counterspell (place dispel magic in ring, if casted on you, it is countered)
3. Spellblade
and countless others

Sorry dont have my books with me at the moment, but hope the above helped

and countless others

I can't think of any other than those you have already suggested, actually.

As usual, Psionics can help solve the problem.

The power Dispelling Buffer provides a +5 bonus to caster level against dispells and is checked last. Combined with the Bead of Karma, Orange Ioun Stone, etc. this can make the caster level check all but impossible for anything but an optimized dispeller.

Thanks I like the spell blade idea. I was hoping for a feat but I couldn't find any. All great ideas.

Something people miss seems to be the Ring of Greater Counterspells from DMGII. It functions as a ring of counterspells, except a spellcaster can use its secondary ability to 'swift counterspell' one spell a day. Get two of these, put dispel magic in one and greater dispel in the other. Use the free counterspells to stop MDJ and AMFs.

Isn't there a feat called spell girding or something like that that makes the dispell check 2 harder?? not sure, but that is my only advice

Don't forget Initiates also get to add their PRC level to the dispel DCs of their abjurations.

You might consider the following options to reduce your vulnerability to dispel magic...

Sorcerer/Wizards feat selection:
-Improved Initiative (PHB)
-Improved Counterspell (PHB)
-Reactive Counterspell (PGtF)
-Spell Mastery (PHB); [choosing dispel magic or greater dispel magic]
-Signature Spell (PGtF); [choosing dispel magic or greater dispel magic]
This allows you to cast either Dispel Magic or (even better) Greater Dispel Magic without preparing an action to do so and without even having to memorize the spell ahead of time.

Taking a level in Shadow Adept would help (though it would limit the power of some of your other spells).

I guess I should have mentioned I'm playing a Warmage/Druid/ Arcane Heirophant. I thought there was a feat like Spell Girding but I can't find it.

Dispel does not target you. It targets your buffs. You can be immune to greater dispel all you like, but I don't think it confers that immunity to spell-effects active on you.
I'd love to see myself proven wrong though... it would help out a lot of my builds.

No, a targeted version of Dispel does just that... it targets someone. As a result, most of theirs buffs and perhaps a few items will be out of the game for the fight. Here's my proof:

Target or Area: One spellcaster, creature, or object; or 20-ft.-radius burst

Ah but:
Targeted Dispel

One object, creature, or spell is the target of the dispel magic spell. You make a dispel check (1d20 + your caster level, maximum +10) against the spell or against each ongoing spell currently in effect on the object or creature. The DC for this dispel check is 11 + the spell’s caster level. If you succeed on a particular check, that spell is dispelled; if you fail, that spell remains in effect.

I could target an active spell on the creature, and not target the creature itself... I think. But I can at least target a spell, and not a creature.

As a player, i'd prefer someone targetting my spell X then my person, which means it would have a chance at countering spell A-X. In fact, as a party, i would be delighted that an enemy would try to dispel my spell X, rather then throw it at my party in which case he could (and probably would) dispel 1 spell per partymember.

spellblade doesn't work, it's like spell immunity (clr 4) or Greater spell immunity, you can't be immune to a spell that doesn't allow spell resistance.

Spellblade is based on Spell Turning not either of the Spell Immunity spells. Which has the limit of spells that target you. That's way people are pointing out that the Spellblade isn't the best defense against the Dispel Magic chain since most of the time if someone is using Dispel Magic they are going to use the area effect ability of the Dispel which gets around Spellblade. And there is also the ability to target the spell itself which gets around Spellblade again.

I found Spell Girding in Magic of Faerun pg 22. Dispell checks against your spells are at -2.
