Ranger 17 / Rogue 3

Ranger 17 - Hide in Plain Sight (Ex): While in any sort of natural terrain, a ranger of 17th level or higher can use the Hide skill even when being observed.

Hide Skill: Action - usually none. Normally, you make a Hide check as part of your movemen, so it doesn't take a separate action.

Spring Attack - move / attack / move - which would allow you to hide again.

Rogue 3 (taken after Ranger is completed)
- allocate all skill points to Use Magic Device and take the feats Skill Focus: Use Magic Device and Magical Aptitude for a total of +5 bonus.

The character's Use Magic Device check should be a minimum of +31 total to allow caster level checks of Level 12 and emulate ability score of 16 to be done without failure.

The tactics surrounding this character is the use of Antimagic Field scrolls, Hide in Plain Sight and poisoned daggers. Activate Antimagic Field and move in with a Hide (possible since the ranger's ability is Ex and not Su like the Shadowdancer and Assassin's version of the ability). Just stand next to a mage for fun while allies shoot arrows.

Next round, attack the closest target with Spring Attack and initiate Hide while moving out. This should give you sneak attacks unless the person detects you through spot and listen checks. No worries about spells since the Antimagic Field will suppress them the moment you close the gap to 10 feet.

When the attack hits, all magical protections from items and spells are down, thus lowering AC and saves gained from magic items and spells and nullifying Delay Poison.

Any ideas on how I can improve on this build or suggestions on tactic variations?

Ditch the feats.

Your a ranger/rogue skill monkey and don't have 16 int? Depending on your int a magical item that adds to int could be better here. Then you don't need to emulate it.

Unless you somehow manage to keep a person in the AMF for rounds on end you aren't nullifying Delay poison.

Regarding the Int 16, yeah, you are right... was trying too many funky things with the character... my bad ^_^

But doesn't contact poison kicks in when you hit the person? Since it's melee, the Antimagic Field should be covering the opponent and prevent the Delay Poison from stopping the initial poison damage, no?

anyway, the reason I submitted the character was because I can't seem to move it beyond being just a one trick monkey.

I would really like to move away from Antimagic Field and do something more funky with the character.

Thanks.

Use a staff of Antimagic Field. Its cheaper to get 25/50 uses and the DC is only 20.

Yeah this will work.

Ranger 17/Rogue 3.. I can say 1 thing. Just snipe. Way way easier than this. No UMD or AMF needed really. Just abuse HiPS and Sniping.

Manyshot + Snipe Hide = Total annoyance.

Just do it from 200+ ft away and you will never be seen.

I agree with you about sniping... unfortunately my DM has a habit of dumping us in dungeons, and that kind of screws hiding because the opponent mages and clerics have Blindsight casted all the time (paranoid bunch).

Once detected, it's a divide and conquer game for the DM, with a Forcecage / Maze almost guaranteed to be targetted on the fighter / rogue characters. I only took the Antimagic to prevent Maze from coming close and HiPS was just to prevent the mage from targetting me with a Forcecage.

Any suggestions as to how a fighter/rogue type character can approach a well prepared mage?

What kind of a DM actually uses blindsight ALL THE TIME?!
Sounds like you have a GM that metagames.

That beside the point, a well prepared mage can be take down by hiding near the mage and readying an action to attack the mage when he casts a spell OR move into his space (so that your AMF covers the mage.

Dont have the book with me but I dont think he can detect you with the blindsight as its range is (i think) 20 feet. Basically hide out of the blindsight range and move in when he gestures a spell.
