My Dwarven Fig 4/Cleric 4/Battlesmith 2/Hammer of Moradin 5 needs one more caster level (I don't want to progress as cleric or batttlesmith). The only item I know of that increases caster level is the ioun stone in the DMG that costs 30.000. I want something cheaper.

Are there any items that increases caster level for creating items?

If not, what would you suggest as a reasonable price for such an item that only applies to creating arms & armor?

I dunno what you intend to make, i do know however that all the Golem-books both provide xp-cost and an extra lvl for the purpose of creating them... but i am thinking that that is not what you want

Thanks for replying! I just need to increase caster level by one with some kind of item; have caster level 14 for the purpose of creating items now (cleric 4, practiced spellcaster 4, battlesmith 6), and need caster level 15.

I know of the ioun stone in DMG, but it is somewhat expensive at 30.000 gp.

The setting is Faerun; most Wizards books are allowed (complete, races + some others).

Edit: What are golem books?

Caster level is not a PreReq for making an item. Why do you need to be 15th level to make it?

You must meet its Caster Level.

And if you want to make an Enhancement you need to have that times ... uh ... 3?

That's right, you need to have a caster level of enhancement bonus * 3, i.e caster level 15 for +5 items. Also CL 15 for intelligent item creation, which sounds fun. Since I want to complete Hammer of Moradin before epic play I need +1 caster level from an item.

If you don't mind muddling with your character a bit the Ironsoul Forgemaster from MoI gives an effective caster level for weapons and armor crafting equal to your class level x 3, and you could probably convinve your DM to allow incarnum to qualify for HoM in lieu of divine spellcasting (if not, it's still possible, you'll just have to drop the fighter levels). It also gets (at fifth level it so happens) a nice DR granting feature which synergizes well with HoM.

Thanks for the tip Archimedes, but I'm unable to do that now since I'm already 15th level, startet playing this character before MoI came out.

I could just take another level of battlesmith (or cleric) for caster levels but proceeding with HoM seems better.

The ioun stone in DMG grants +1 CL at 30.000 gp. Any thoughts on what a reasonable price would be if the item wasn't slotless, and only applied to creating items, would 15.000 gp cover it?

Edit: What are golem books?

golem manual contains information, incantations and magical power that help a character to craft a golem. The instructions therein grant a +5 competence bonus on skill checks made to craft the golem’s body. Each manual also holds the prerequisite spells needed for a specific golem, effectively grants the builder use of the Craft Construct feat during the construction of the golem, and grants the character an increase to her caster level for the purpose of crafting a golem. Any golem built using a golem manual does not cost the creator any XP, since the requisite XP are "contained" in the book and "expended" by the book during the creation process.

The spells included in a golem manual require a spell trigger activation and can be activated only to assist in the construction of a golem. The cost of the book does not include the cost of constructing the golem’s body. Once the golem is finished, the writing in the manual fades and the book is consumed in flames. When the book’s ashes are sprinkled upon the golem, it becomes fully animated.

Example: Clay Golem Manual
The book contains animate objects, bless, commune, and resurrection. The reader may treat her caster level as two levels higher than normal for the purpose of crafting a clay golem. The book supplies 1,540 XP for the creation of a clay golem.

I don't really delve that much in creation feats, except for the golem books, used it for a Birthright campaign and watched as it teared through an army (with non-magical longswords they couldn't overcome its dmg reduction)
Sorry i couldn't help...

Ah, I actually thought it was some kind of non-Wizards book, now I'm following you ;O) Thanks anyway!

You must meet its Caster Level. There is not a rule that says you must meet the CL of an ITEM. CL is not an item crafting prereq. It is a power guidline for the purpose of detect magic and the like ONLY.

If I am wrong you can just show me the rule.

Cl requirements for "+ bonus" items are, as you stated, 3 times the bonus. This actualy is a rule.

Creating magic armor has a special prerequisite: The creator’s caster level must be at least three times the enhancement bonus of the armor. If an item has both an enhancement bonus and a special ability, the higher of the two caster level requirements must be met.

Caster Level for Armor and Shields: The caster level of a magic shield or magic armor with a special ability is given in the item description. For an item with only an enhancement bonus, the caster level is three times the enhancement bonus. If an item has both an enhancement bonus and a special ability, the higher of the two caster level requirements must be met.

see?
