| Sisyfos03-15-04, 04:52 PM | I've been toying with the concept of monk/assassin in my mind, and I'd like to know if anyone has had similar thoughts and what you have come up with. It need not have assassin PrC levels, but it should be able to do fast&silent kills when necessary. A sleeper hold, stunning fist is nice enough for this I guess. It would be great if some ranged capabilities could also be added into the build, but that might be asking too much and stretching it too thin? Anyhow, the concept I had in mind was some combination of these: ability to dimension door often (through horizon walker, gitzherai [or was it githyanki], shadow walker template, magic items, spells?), sunschool tactical feat from complete warrior, high stunning fist DC (were there feats/items to make target do either FORT or WILL save?), perhaps high death attack DC, perhaps good capabilities to use poisons... also some ability to disguise and fit in with a crowd. What kinds of level 20 builds would be the best ones to make with this concept in mind? |
| Bloodletter03-15-04, 09:58 PM | Sounds to me like you're trying to do too much with this build. I think any dips into horizon walker will ultimately limit the power of the build since they don't get sneak attack (which will be a big deal w/ flurry of blows). Some ideas to get your creative juices flowing: - Choke Hold from OA (rocks for grapplers) - Unbalancing Strike from OA (aka all my attacks become sneak attacks if you fail your ref save, AWESOME tactical ability for use vs. fighters, clerics, and anyone else w/o a decent ref save) - Shadow character race template (that thingy in the unapproachable east) - Ninja of the Cresent Moon PrC - Telflammer Shadowlord PrC One build I toyed w/ was: Rogue 1 / Fighter 2 / Monk 2 / Assassin 5* / Ninja of the Cresent Moon 10 Feats would include Unbalancing strike, expert tactician, stunning fist, choke hold, imp. grapple * the other option is to lose a level here and go for that goofy race out of Unapproachable East My $0.02. |
| PhaedrusXY03-15-04, 10:17 PM | Leave off the death attack and you could adapt my monk2/ninja6/NinjaSpy8/TeflemmarShadowlord4 build to do this. You'd have to rearrange the feats just a bit, because I took Improved Trip (OA rules) and Combat Reflexes for the monk feats, not Stunning Fist. You can find the build at the end of the first post HERE (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=117102&highlight=ninja). |
| Qaetar03-15-04, 10:28 PM | 1. Monk 1 Feat: Stunning Fist; Monk 2 Feat: Combat Reflexes. 2. Character 1 Feat: Improved Initiative; Character 3 Feat: Death Blow. CDG as a Standard action. 3. Character 6 Feat: Quicker Than the Eye: Bluff as an MEA for an immediate, free Partial Action 4. Character 12 Feat: Freezing the Lifeblood Tactic: When within 5' of an opponent: 5' step, QTtE for a FtL attack, Death Blow for a CDG. When beyond 5': Use Monk speed for a charging FtL or Stunning Fist attack then QTtE, FtL, DB. (Qaetar) Note: If you can find a way to get Dex 19 as a Human at Level 1 you can have QTtE at Level 1 (With your Human Feat). ECL3 with the Winged Template would do it and increase your mobility, though it'd assassinate (No pun intended) your BAB and HP. |
| mean_liar03-15-04, 11:11 PM | I'd go with Qaetar's combo. It only requires 2 levels of Monk for the feats and abilities, leaving you with scads of room for other classes and feats. I've always been partial to Ninja Spy: the skill bonuses are outrageous and it gets HiPS. You can even take Ninja (Rokugan or Dragon #318) levels or rearrange feats and a Fighter level or two and get into Shou Disciple for a while, maybe use an exotic weapon and take EWM... Lots of room for a monk/assassin to be cool since it takes so very little. I suppose the trick is developing a build thats deadly in non-contrived situations where someone has the drop on YOU. |
| Boondoggle03-16-04, 05:45 AM | I've always been a fan of Rog 3/Ftr 2/Asn 3/Ninja of the Crescent Moon 10 |
| Sisyfos03-16-04, 07:04 AM | It seems that a lot of these builds rely on OA material, which our DM generally does not allow. I do agree with mean_liar here. Qaetar's build seems to accomplish best what I was going for, while boondoggle's build is also nice but it is pretty different from what I wanted. Lots of room for a monk/assassin to be cool since it takes so very little. I suppose the trick is developing a build thats deadly in non-contrived situations where someone has the drop on YOU. This is where I like the ability to dimension door a lot. Just have a ring of counterspells (dimensional anchor) on you and you are pretty much set with this. Sun school tactical feat is also a nice add-on for this. You'll be eventually able to retreat very fast and turn the tide of these guerilla type combats against your opponent. Just retreat, find your opponent, DD next to them and attack back. Very flexible and very cool. This kind of a combatant does not really have that much normal party synergy. It's a great loner character though. Maybe I should make a BBEG like this. Or a pair/trio. I can see these kinds of characters working nicely as a pair also... but less well in a party with a cleric, a wizard, a fighter and him. Tactic: When within 5' of an opponent: 5' step, QTtE for a FtL attack, Death Blow for a CDG. That is a pretty nice two-round routine. A sun school dimension door and Freezing the lifeblood seems to be another nice way to start a fight for this character. EDIT: I just noticed that you said that quicker than the eye allows one to make that partial action as a free action? Is that so? If it is, then I've misunderstood something fundamental about that feat, when I have looked at it earlier. /EDIT Sisyfos PS. Thanks all. I think it's getting clear. Stunning strike for FORT save, unbalancing strike for REF saves. I'd like to find something which attacks will saves also. |
| Boondoggle03-16-04, 07:24 AM | What you seem, to me, to be describing in your post is the Ninja of the Crescent Moon PrC. They are monkish assassins. |
| Sisyfos03-16-04, 07:40 AM | It is a good candidate. It is lacking the fast movement I want, but it has some other nice movement abilities (fast sneak, gaseous form, etherealness are all very nifty). It also combines sneak attack with monkish abilities. It is a good suggestion, sorry for giving the credit in my last message. Monk8/Fig2/NotCM10 for example might actually be pretty close to what I am looking for. There is a lot of synergy between monk' stunning attacks + flurry + sneak attacks, and NotCM seems to be a nice way to capitalize on that synergy. On the other hand Qaetar's build replaced that synergy with the freezing the lifeblood and death blow (coup de grace) synergy. Both are good approaches. Thank you both. Sisyfos |
| Qaetar03-16-04, 10:56 AM | In addition, if you want to use a Will save attack, consider Kiai Shout and Greater Kiai Shout. Panicked is an interesting condition. From the SRD 3.5, AbilitiesandConditions.rtf Panicked: Characters who are panicked are shaken, and they run away from the source of their fear as quickly as they can. Other than running away from the source, their path is random. They flee from all other dangers that confront them rather than facing those dangers. Panicked characters cower if they are prevented from fleeing. Cowering: The character is frozen in fear and can take no actions. A cowering character takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class and loses her Dexterity bonus (if any). Therefore, if you corner your opponent, (or even if you don't), he'll be very easy to hit and easy to Paralyze (-2 to further saving throws). If you get a Death Monk build, I'd love to see it. A bit of a shame that Kiai Shout requires Charisma. (Qaetar) |
| Qaetar03-16-04, 10:58 AM | Regarding QTtE: I am under the impression that you make an MEA bluff. If it succeeds you get a partial action immediately. In addition, you get your normal Standard action for the turn. Otherwise, QTtE would be worded as a Full-Round action, not an MEA. (Qaetar) |
| Myric03-16-04, 12:25 PM | How about an Monk 20 (or the cheesy Aasimar 0) polymorphed into a Kelvezu? |
| Sisyfos03-16-04, 02:00 PM | Originally posted by Myric How about an Monk 20 (or the cheesy Aasimar 0) polymorphed into a Kelvezu? I'd like to keep these polymorphs out of the table for now. But you are right a PAO to some nice battleform does increase monk's efficiency. For that kind of assassin monk's I'd rather go with monk/shifter (Hartz's version - far from core). Sisyfos |
| Naramyth03-16-04, 11:49 PM | After reading this and Qaetar's Death Monk Thread I've been inspired to put in my two cents. go mnk4/ftr1/Shou5/Rog1/Ninja Spy9 in that order. 1 monk stunning fist, Focus(unarmed), Improved Initive 2 monk Combat Reflexes 3 monk Expert Tactican, +10 speed 4 monk 1d8 unarmed, ki(magic) 5 Fighter Dodge 6 Shou Quicker then the Eye 7 Shou Mobility 8 Shou 9 Shou Death Blow, Spring Attack 10 Shou unarmed damage 2d6, martial flurry(any) 11 Rogue +1d6 SA 12 Ninja Spy Freezing the life Blood, Spiked Chain Proficentcy 13 NS 14 NS 15 NS Elusive Target 16 NS 17 NS 18 NS Improved Natural Attack 19 NS 20 NS You wind up with Bab +16, lowest save is will at like ~10 or so and can have that nasty Freezing/Death Blow Combo with 9th level flurry(which is an extra attack at no penalty). Your can be proficent in spiked and blunt chain, which are excelent reach weapons. You also have spring attack and elusive target, making you hard to hit and pin down. Finally this ends with 3d6 unarmed damage and 4d6 SA, which, although isn't epic proprtions, isn't to shabby either when combind with expert tatician. I really like this build, it has a great "throw down" feel to it and still maintains a good BaB, saves and hit points. This I feel fits a secondary, steathy front liner. Finally to apease Sisyfos an alternate, teleporting version, Mnk2/Rgr3/Horizon Walker6/Ninja Spy9 1 monk stunning fist, Dodge, Improved Initive 2 monk Combat Reflexes 3 Ranger Track, Expert Tactican 4 Ranger Two weapon 5 Ranger Enderence 6 Horizon Walker Quicker then the Eye 7 HW 8 HW 9 HW Death Blow 10 HW 11 HW 12 Ninja Spy Freezing the life Blood, Chain Proficentcy 13 NS 14 NS 15 NS Sun School 16 NS 17 NS 18 NS ??? 19 NS 20 NS Not as fun I think, and abit more specialized, but DD every 1d4 rounds is nothing to sneeze at mind you with the Deathblow/Freezing combo. Your alot more weapons based with very little in extras in that department i.e. no trip or disarm, but your still a nasty teleporting ninja of death, because if your of death your automatically scarier. ;) Enjoy! |
| PhaedrusXY03-17-04, 01:01 AM | I like your builds Naramyth, but he said he can't use OA. |
| balefire4203-17-04, 01:07 AM | This is a litle iffy, but if a finger has enough surface area to smear a dose of contact poison, once a monk gets poison immunity at level 11, just run up and hit them with your five fingers as a touch attack, and bam, five saves against dragon bile, black lotus extract, or whatever. If you can't fit a dose of poison on one finger, just put a dose on each hand and a dose on each elbow. Jump in and flurry. Hiding contact poison in your mouth, and then spitting it on people would work also. And of course, you can always just coat a bunch of shuriken with poison and throw them. Having the craft: poison skill, and a garden of black lotus or whatever makes it so this tactic is actually semi-feasable money wise. |
| PhaedrusXY03-17-04, 01:34 AM | Originally posted by balefire42 Hiding contact poison in your mouth, and then spitting it on people would work also.I like using mouth darts (fukimi bari) for this with my Ninja Spy. He's immune to poison anyway, so I can use whatever poisons I want and not worry about it. |
| nobody_of_consequence03-20-04, 01:50 AM | I know this thread is a little old to be posting to, but I just got my hands on a copy of the Player's Guide to Faerun and the Monk of the Long Death PrC could be close to what you're looking for. Death attack, death touch, stackable with monk levels (you'll miss out on flurry and SR improvement, however) the ability to vanish from the memory of potential witnesses: seems like it would fit the bill nicely. |
| Sisyfos03-20-04, 04:24 AM | Yes. I heard about the monk of long death and thought it might be a fit. I haven't seen the book yet though so I am waiting at the moment for that. Sisyfos |
| Part-Human203-20-04, 09:30 PM | And the Dragon Magazine #318 has the Ninja class. Dragon Magazine #314 has the Master of the South Wind PrC that continues Monk abilities and adds spells (Cha based) and Sneak Attack. Dimension Door is on their spell list. |
| Sisyfos03-21-04, 06:38 AM | I do not know if other CO board members have this same problem, but when I make a character I try to make it as simple as possible if I am going for character power. The reason is that if I use some exotic material (3rd party products or dragon magazine) which the other players are not using, then it is easier for the other members to be judgemental of the character's power. If I use such material I'd prefer to make a sub-par character. I'll check those PrCs though. They do seem like very nice matches for the concept. Sisyfos |
| CompleteSatori03-21-04, 09:31 AM | I think that Monk of the Long Death is exactly what you are looking for, Sis... It gets continued Monk abilities, or new ones if the character never was a monk, and a great Death Attack, ala Assassin PrC. |

| CompleteSatori03-21-04, 09:39 AM | wow TRIPLE post!!! Accidents do happen... |
| ZenRanger03-21-04, 01:13 PM | i didnt notice anyone mention it already, if i missed it i apologize, but the Shadow Walker Template from Unappraochable East is only a +1 LA and has quite a few nice goodies, including several spell-like abilities such as dimension door, which you mentioned. i dont have my books with me, but 4 levels of Tef. Shadowlord are definetley worth it and go well with the SW template. that would leave you with 15 levels to play with. i'm a fan of Monk 11 if using 3.5, since that give you Greater Flurry. i'd fill the remaning levels with Rogue or NotCM PrC. I'll probably revise this post once i can look at my books and come up with a more solid idea. |
