Hey folks. First time poster on this particular board.

I was wondering if anyone had some ideas on what I could do with my current PC, a 5th-level human swashbuckler. It's not that I'm unhappy with him in anyway, but I was just trying to find someway to make him a little more.. interesting, or exotic. After reading these boards I can see the swashbuckler isn't a popular class after 3rd level but seeing as I can't go back I'll just have to make the most of what I do have.

To make it easier, here's what he's got.

Ferdinand De Soto, NG Male Human Swashbuckler 5:

Str 15, Dex 18, Con 13, Int 16, Wis 12, Cha 14.

Skills: Balance 8(14), Bluff 8(10), Climb 8(10), Craft (weaponsmith) 2(5), Diplomacy 5(11), Escape Artist 5(9), Jump 5(9), Sense Motive 5(6), Swim 5(7), Tumble 8(14), Use Rope 5(7).
Feats: Blindfight, Combat Expertise, Improved Feint, Weapon Finesse.
Languages: Common, Elven, Giant, Draconic.
Possessions: 2 +1 rapiers (though only one carried at any one time), +1 light mace, +1 studded leather, smoking bottle, 2 potions of cure moderate wounds, 2 potions of spider climb, potion of blur, potion of darkvision.

Currently, Ferdinand is adventuring with a slightly cocky halfling ranger, a plate-mail clad human fighter with a BO problem, a laconic sitar-playing human cleric of St Cuthbert (don't ask) and a beatnik dwarven rogue with wrestling fetish. Oh, and the ranger's dog.

As you may note Ferdinand hasn't been created or played with any particular "build" in mind. This partly because I like to roleplay rather than rollplay and so chose my feats based on what I felt suited the character as opposed to those that might grant Ferd the biggest benefits. Our GM wasn't keen on allowing prestige classes at the start of the campaign either so we didn't even bother to look at them, though I feel if apply a little pressure I might be able to get her to fold...

So I've considered my future options thusfar:

On the combat front, fighter is obvious choice for the bonus feats; I'm sorely tempted to pick up an EWP in spiked chain for that tasty 10ft reach. Ranger has the same BAB progression, better saves and much better skill points, coupled with the option for a two-weapon fighting style. Of course, I could just stick to Swashbuckler for now, which I'm tempted to do (at least until I pick up Acrobatic Charge) anyway. A few levels of rogue would make that Improved Feint feat suddenly very, very nasty.

On the other hand, our party currently lacks an arcane spellcaster, so most of those groovy wands and arcane items we find inevitably wind up in the local pawn shop. Given Ferd's high intelligence and reasonble charisma, a few levels of bard, wizard or sorcerer wouldn't go astray, though I tend to view these classes as being all-or-nothing choices.

So what do you all think? Is there an exciting new career out there for Ferdinand? Are there any prestige classes I should keep in mind? I've heard lots of good things about the Dervish, though I don't know what the requirements are; could someone pass them on for me? (I understand that posting prestige class prereqs is not a violation of the CoC). And another note: does the "Virtual Feats" rule from the 3.0 splatbooks still apply (ie, would Ferdinand's Dodge class ability count as the Dodge feat for purposes of meeting prereqs?).

Thanks for anything feedback you can offer...
