Feats? PrCs? Spells? Anything to make your Dispel Magic less likely to be a wasted spell?

^^ That about sums it up. Greater Dispel Magic and HIgh caster levels improved with domains(if there exist such a thing) and Ioun stones and Prayer Bead of Karma...

The Inquisiion Domain gives +4 to dispel checks. Note that this is not a caster level increase, so you can get +14 with Dispel Magic and +24 with Greater Dispel Magic.

I'm honestly surprised that Church Inquisitor doesn't show up in more builds. I know there are both Alignment and Roleplaying restrictions, but there are roleplaying restrictions to Contemplative and it's in just about every Divine build. You can theoretically get into CI at about 3rd or 4th level, you get full divine casting progression, you get more Skills, abilities like Detect Evil at will, Immunity to Enchantment (Charm and eventually Compulsion,) Inquisition Domain with the +4 to all Dispel Checks, Pierce Illusions (which might be great against the devious Illusionists in this thread, (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=290914) and Force Shapechange can be great against Druids or Mages using Polymorph. I'm guessing it's the alignment angle since that's pretty restricting in a pure min/max scenario. Still, it's definitely a Divine caster class worth checking out.

So far I have Beads of Karma (and any other CL boosts) and a Domain.

So what's an Abjurer to do? Any feats or arcane PrCs help?

the PrC (guild wizard of waterdeep?), in addition to giving access to a spell pool like mage of the arcane order, also give bonuses on dispel checks.

It also has an XP penalty.

From the Dragonlance campaign setting, one of the order secrets for a White Robe wizard gives a competency bonus to Dispell checks of +1 for every 2 class levels, to a maximum of +5. Also gets Improved Counterspell for free. (I note that you are an abjuration specialist, which a white robe wizard must be either an abjurist or a diviner.)

I think that mixed with Archmage's Spell Turning coupled with a Greater Dispell 4/day as a spell like ability could make for a nifty counterspeller.

Note that caster level bonuses would cap out, as the dispell spells have inherent caps on the check's bonus via caster levels. i.e. a level 22 caster still only gets a +20 to his dispell check with greater dispell, unless there is some other bonus to be applied.

One "trick" is to use area dispel on a group you know or suspect to be spell-buffed. Having it affect multiple targets and possibly even multiple spells on multiple targets means in theory your one spell has a chance to cancel out a number of enemy spells. Also averages are supposed to work in the PC's favor, so roling more than once means you are less likely to blow the spell just because of one bad roll.

Spell power and circle magic from 3.5 Red Wizard.

The 4th lvl Sor/Wiz spell "Spell Enhancer" from Player's Guide to Faerun gives you a +2 to caster level for the next spell you cast (which casts as quickened, IIRC), which would help a bit for getting to the maximum.

Cleric. Inquisition Domain., Beads of Karma, Ioun stone.

Wizard/red Wiz (Abjur)/Circle Magic/Archchmage Domain:Inquisition Domain/Ioun Stone/Spell Enhancer

Spell thematics helps, a little.
Goliaths can also take a feat allowing them to re-roll caster level checks. Which is bad-ass.

Hathrans also have access to circle magic, as beforementioned RW's.

I had occassion to play a high-level cleric recently, and went with an Inquisitor/Exorcist build, with Divine Spell Power, Pious Spellsurge, Purification & Good Domains, Domain Focus (Good), Concecrate Spell, Greater Spell Penetration and a strand of prayer beads & +1 CL Ioun Stone. In this outting, we faced a Nightcrawler casting some fairly nasty spells with a very high caster level (20+, aparently), I counterspelled a Mass Hold Monster and Confusion directed at the party, and also a Cone of Cold which might not have done that much, but was lined up to catch everyone in it, so may have been worth it. I also didn't bother dispelling the CoC that only hit myself and another fairly high-hp character. In a different encounter, I was able to use some of the same CL-boosts to blind & deafen a CR 15 red dragon with a Holy Word, and I was also casually punching through SR all night. And I haven't even 'pulled out all the stops' yet, and used Divine Spell Power, Bead of Karma, and Pious Spellsurge all at once....

It's not arcane, but Psionics also gives you a couple options

Dispel Psionics can be augmented with additional power points, gives you an additional +2 per point spent.

There's also an item; you'd think an arcane version could be made for similar prices:

Third Eye Repudiate: While worn, this powerful item allows the wearer to manifest dispel psionics once per day with a +20 modifier on the dispel check (the wearer uses the +20 modifier in place of his manifester level).
Strong psychokinesis; ML 20th; Craft Universal Item, dispel psionics; Price 43,200 gp.
