The typical limit for skills is your level +3. Is there anyway to have ranks higher than that? Basically has anyone found any loopholes on that for meeting prestige class requirements based on skill ranks?

There are a couple ways, but they are very, very limited. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is the Codex Anathema from Lords of Madness. It grants the user 5 additional ranks in Knowledge (Dungeoneering), 2 ranks of Knowledge (Arcana) and 2 ranks of Knowledge (The Planes). It also gives a +2 inherent bonus to Intelligence. On the down-side, it reduces your Wisdom by 2 and costs a not inconsiderable 37,500gp.

Could be useful, I suppose, but I've never seen it used in a build yet.

There's also the temporary ability from the Void Disciple called Moment of Clarity, which grants a number of ranks in any skill equal to the relevant ability modifier. This is only the case in extreme twink builds with higher mods than their level +3, though, but they are actual ranks.

The only other way, as far as I know, is even more restricted: Illithid Savant allows you to exceed your normal limit in a skill when you add a devoured brain's skill ranks.

Unfortunately, these were the kinds of answers I expected. But I figured if anyone knew, the CO people would. :D

I wonder how they came up with that price for the Codex Anathema...could be that if a DM is lenient you could make a custom Codex with different skills and ranks if we knew how it was priced. :evillaugh

There was a regional feat in the playtest version of the forgotten realms campaign guide called (IIRC), Sadistic Training. It was a Drow elf feat which allowed you to exceed the normal rank limitations by 2.

However, it was wisely removed after playtesting and does not appear in the released prduct.

I thought there was a prestige class somewhere that increased your max ranks to level+4 in the acrobatic skills. Maybe it was one of my DM's homebrews and I got confused.

umm, another super limited way is if you were an illithid (or even half-illithid) from the underdark book. There is a PrC called illithid savant that lets you once per level or something like that suck all the ranks from your victim of the brain sucking. It says explicitly that you can go over your normal ranks, but thereafter cant put ranks into that skill until you are of a level to do it. So, theoretically, if you hit a rogue or something, you could pick any of his skills with high ranks, and take em for yourself.

You could get help from a bard, or from an exemplar with the skill sharing ability, or use the CV aid another's skill check rule.
