Any way to defend TRIP? [Archive] - Wizards Community

When playing a DM, I am so afraid of using TRIP to fight PC. The reason is most monsters are bigger in size, it's meant they are good tripper naturally.
A Tripped PC is of no hope to stand up again in my experience.

TRIP is so overwhelmingly powerful and I can't figure out a feat or some ability that can defend it.

Is there any way to defend it??

Someone can give me advice?

Steadfast Boots in the Arms and Equipment Guide make the wearer immune to being tripped or bull rushed, and quite economical too.

Dwarves get a stability bonus to resist being tripped, also players how have imp trip as a feat also get a +4 bonus to resist.

If you trip but feel for the PC's, don't trip every attack. Even I feel bad tripping everything all the time or at least trying to.

The prone attack feat almost completely defeats trippers. Not only are the penalties for being tripped removed, but you can attack and regain your feet as a free action.

Also note, that only few monsters actually can trip as per the improved trip feat. Most creatures have to make a touch attack, causing an attack of opportunity. If this AoO is successful, the trip attempt is negated anyway.

However, trip is a good combat maneuver and there's not much a character can do about an optimised trip monster.

If I don't misread the context, we only provoke AoO in attempt to trip with unarmed. Even if we are unarmed, but the enemy can only do one AoO to you in a round. So as long as we use our full-atk to trip, it's not the problem that AoO will fail our trip.

Thus, if we face a legion of tripper, even if they are merely orcs, it seems still dangerous, doesn't it?

You can only trip with a trip weapon (scythe, spiked chain etc.) or with an unarmed strike. So most monsters will have to use an unarmed strike (albeit their natural weapons) to perform a trip attack.

However you can of course make several trip attempts in hope of draining enough AoOs from your enemy to land a hit.

Something to bear in mind- players aren't obliged to stand up after being tripped. The penalty for attacking while prone is only -4, after all.

Also note that combat reflexes gives multiple AoO.

There are many ways to get around trip actually.

I think I saw a couple armor abilities that give bonuses to defending against trip attempts in Shining South while flipping through it in the store. Don't know much more about them then that, though.

DC 35 tumble check to stand as a free action without provoking AoO.

... the catfall power... to paraphrase it says no matter what distance you fall, you land on your feet...
