| Aohd06-17-04, 04:53 PM | Is there any way to grant my animal companions the ablity to share one of my feats? I want to take swarmfighting and I want my direrat animal companions to gain the benifit as well. |
| UMiskatonic06-17-04, 05:12 PM | Like everyone else, they gain feats as they gain hit dice. So, at 1,3,6,9,..., it's another feat. Look in the Monster Manual for advancing creatures. UMiskatonic |

It gains feats when it gains hit dice, which happens as you go up in level of the appropriate class (i.e. druid or ranger). Of course if you're taking a "dip" into these levels, then you have a problem. |

| catharz06-17-04, 11:31 PM | The Heartfire fanner can grant bonus feats with bardic music uses. |

I know it doesn't affect Size... 1) Yes, it doesn't affect size. So increasing a wolf's hit dice via animal companion won't turn him into a virtual dire wolf. 2) Yes, they're bonus hit dice, but bonus hit dice nonetheless provide you with all the benefits of extra hit dice (i.e. hit points, saves, skill points, feats, etc.). To quote from the PHB "Remember that extra Hit dice improve the animal companion's base attack bonus and base save bonuses... An animal companion gains additional skill points and feats for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monster's Hit Dice." |

| Ehlonnia06-18-04, 12:37 PM | Originally posted by necrosnoop110 What about arcane familiars – do they get feats? No. Familiars do not gain bonus HD. They have hit points equal to half the total of their master's hp. For the purposes of spells and similar effects, they count has having the same number of HD as their master. But they never, ever, ever, gain bonus hit dice (discounting spell effects and whatnot). |
| necrosnoop11006-18-04, 01:11 PM | The reason I asked about familiars is because: 3.5 SRD Hit Dice: For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master’s character level or the familiar’s normal HD total, whichever is higher. So if I go up in level my familiar gains hit dice?? I could be reading this wrong and/or reaching at straws - so don't hold me to any of this. Peace, Necrosnoop |
| Aohd06-18-04, 01:24 PM | So does that mean that I can choose a feat for them when I aquire them? If they progress in feats the same way that characters do would they get one at first hit die/level? |
| UMiskatonic06-18-04, 01:28 PM | For familiars, they have this unique connection to you, so... for a sleep spell, targeted against a 1st level wizard and his familiar, the familiar saves as the animal. the same spell targeted against a 10th level wizard would do nothing. The familiar can choose to respond as if it were also 10th level, and therefore immune. The familiar DOES NOT have 10HD, but can often use the abilities of the wizard if superior. Cheers, UMiskatonic. |
