| cheezwizthe47th09-25-03, 11:39 PM | I'm thinking about playing a centaur in my next game. I'm mostly just attracted to them for RP-based reasons, though their stats aren't bad at all, really... The "Favored Class: Ranger" bit is a little awkward, especially if I don't terribly want to take any levels of ranger, but... We're starting characters based at level 10, and I had a stroke of very weird luck with the ability rolls- four fourteens, a sixteen and a twelve. The basics go something like this: "Horsey Bob" (Temporary Name :P ) Centaur (ECL 6, 4 Humanoid HD) Monstrous Humanoid 4/Fighter 4/(LA +2) Str: 23 (14 +8 racial +1 level) Dex: 20 (16 +4 racial) Con: 18 (14 +4 racial) Int: 12 (14 -2 racial) Wis: 16 (14 +4 racial) Cha: 12 (12) HP: Approx 90, +\- as per actual rolls. Size: Large Speed: 50ft. Special Qualities: Darkvision, 60ft. AL: CG I was trying mostly to decide what to take as far as feats and the like are concerned, as well as perhaps a nice PrC for him to segue into in later levels. I've been thinking about perhaps taking a heavy lance, charging into battle for the nice bonus damage, and then using a Fullblade or (if I decided to go TWF) a Greatsword and Longsword combo, being that I am large, after all. We're playing 3.5, so I don't have to worry about wasting too many feats on TWF, and I just like the concept of being able to dual-wield a greatsword. :D Anybody got any good ideas? (Oh, and one final request, please no spiked chain-using builds, please? I just have an inexplicable loathing for them. :tantrum: ) |
| Thizual09-26-03, 02:53 AM | Take Iron Will, Two Levels of Ranger, and then Holy Liberator Why two levels of Ranger? Make a pseudo-paladin liberator and get +2 vs undead...very unnatural and uncentaur like. The TWF thing might come in handy. I know you don't particularly like Ranger, but it's so you can reach Holy Liberator more quickly and get a good Reflex Save, which you reall want with this build. You end up with Horsey Bob the Redeemer, Destroyer of all that returns from the Grave...well...not really but it did add a title. Str should be 14 + 8 = 22 Dex 12 + 4 = 16 Con 16 + 4 = 20 (further levelups) Int 14 - 2 = 12 Wis 14 + 4 = 18 Cha 14 + 0 = 14 + 2HD = 16 Why the stats like that? Str mod is even meaning you get full 1.5X to it on hitting, con gives you rediculous HP, and Cha bonus to saves. Dex is for Mithral Fullplate or equivalent +3Dex to AC armor. Int is 12, gets some extra skill points per level to take advantage of Ranger class skills (which are helpful, especially for roleplaying purposes). Holy Liberator will run it's full casting progression fairly quickly, giving your character roughly equal stature with any paladin in the party...and the code of conduct is just "play nice johnny." You get bonus spells at every level of casting. Take whatever you want for items, whatever you really want on the Ranger path...but stay focused. You've got 8HD so that's 3 feats + ranger abilities, one feat must be Iron Will. Your suggestion about using your large size would be good. Don't recommend TWF personally, I think you should wield a "Large Two-Handed Greatsword." Plenty of damage there, your armor should be sufficient to deflect enough blows that your buckets of Hp will keep you alive. Holy Liberators have this annoying resistance to mind-affecting enchantments...which prevent people from turning you against your allies. The Ranger/Humanoid HD boost your Reflex Save to respectable levels given the +3 from Dex, and well...Fort's good for both your classes. After finishing Holy Liberator (and I would indeed finish it you annoying crusader of good), might I recommend Contemplative to punch a domain onto your spellcasting? This gives you a good, viable fighter-type character that doesn't appear to use ranger apart from a small smattering of special skills. It's not "min/maxed" per say, but if I was doing that I'd go CG Barbarian Frenzied Berserker...claiming of course to having been reincarnated as a centaur following the first three levels of human barbarian so you can get the feats in justifyably. Just claim you had to advance as your new race until you "caught up" to your appropriate ECL, that's about how they do it anyway. M |
| Boondoggle09-26-03, 06:42 AM | I'd stick with the mounted feats. Ask your DM if you can negelct needing the Mounted Combat feat as a prereq due to being a centaur. At the very least, using the feat as is would allow you to make a ride check once per round as your AC, which could be game breaking. I think you should be able to use a lance one-handed & a shield either using your shield or your hooves to attack those too close for your lance. Trample, ride-by-attack, spirited charge, imp. bull rush & awsome blow would all be very useful feats for you. |
| Prism09-26-03, 09:44 AM | I have considered a centaur character in the past. Tribal protector up to level 2 to get wild fighting is good to take before level 10. Maybe ranger 2/tribal 2 before going into another PrC Also you could go the archery route using a huge mighty long bow and maybe follow into Order of the Bow Initiate. With the close quarter shot you could be very flexible both with ranged and melee combat especially when combined with your hoof attacks. |
| cheezwizthe47th09-26-03, 05:57 PM | Thanks for the responses. :D Hmm... do you guys think its worth it to take Multiattack so that I can use a weapon and my hoof attacks at only -2 instead of -5? Also, for some odd reason my DM said that he'd prefer me take Multiweapon Fighting instead of TWF if I wanted to, which I thought was odd being that I only actually have two hands. I guess I could strap on some sort of Horseshoes of Spiky Flaming Doom or something like that, but hooves aren't really much use for weapon manipulation... But ah well. I shall be prepared, then, for strange mutations and whatever that spell is that gives you an extra set of arms. :P I do like the Holy Liberator idea a lot- its a class I've fairly often thought about playing and I can see this guy fitting in pretty well with the ethos and whatnot. It also meshes decently with the "charging into battle" sort of archetype, being that it's at least a little paladin-ish... ;) Where could I find the Awesome Blow feat and the Tribal Protector class? They sound interesting, but I've never encountered them before. |
| LordShade09-26-03, 07:24 PM | Tribal Protector is in Sword & Fist. If you're thinking about using a lance, why not check out the Cavalier PrC? Talk to your DM about adapting it into a "Centaur Knight" PrC. The Ride and Handle Animal bonuses could be changed to Balance and Jump bonuses. I also like the idea of tacking on a couple levels of Tribal Protector (although getting enough feats for both might be dicey...) If you're going to be using only PrCs after level 10, then take Fighter levels over ranger, unless you need the ranger skills. I have never been a big fan of favored enemy. |
| Boondoggle09-27-03, 02:08 AM | Awsome blow is a monster feat in the 3.5 MM & SRD. |
| cheezwizthe47th10-02-03, 07:00 AM | Well, I've gone ahead and gone with most of the ideas Thizual proposed. :D My DM is being rather interesting and has given me the Multiattack feat for free as compensation for being the only player in the campaign to actually complete his “Write me a detailed background sort of thing for your character so that I may later kill off your character’s entire family and/or give you personalized quest type things” requirement. I’m pretty much all in favor of free stuff, though it does strike me as a little silly… but ah well. He’s also willing to waive the Mounted Combat requirement for the rest of the feat line, being that I’d not need to train specifically in the usage of a mount since a centaur is pretty much all mount, all the time. Of course, I also don’t get to roll ride checks to negate hits against myself, but that’s another story altogether. ;) (Also, now that I’ve gotten down what my character is, I’ve been thinking about who the character actually is. In short, he’s turned into a she. And no, I don’t mean to imply anything involving malicious usage of polymorph spells, I’ve just come to the conclusion that I like the concept applied to a female character better.) Here's my character: Kaire Longshanks Female Centaur (ECL 6: 4 Humanoid HD, 2 LA) Monstrous Humanoid 4/Ranger 2/Holy Liberator 2 Str: 22 (14 +8 racial) Dex: 18 (14 +4 racial) Con: 20 (14 +4 racial +2 HD) Int: 12 (14 -2 racial) Wis: 16 (12 +4 racial) Cha: 16 (16) HP: 96 Size: Large Speed: 50ft. Special Qualities: Darkvision, 60ft. AL: CG Deity: Skerrit (god of centaurs) F/R/W: +14/11/12 Major Skills: Spot, Listen, Survival, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Sense Motive Feats: Iron Will, Power Attack, Ride-By Attack, (Multiattack), (Two Weapon Fighting) Class Features: Track, Wild Empathy, Favored Enemy (Human), Rapid Shot, Detect Evil, Divine Grace, Smite Evil 1/day, Resist Enchantment Weapon Sets: “Large” Shocking Greatsword +2 (+13/8 | 3d6+1d6, 19-20/x2) Heavy Lance (+13/8 | 1d8, x3), Large Steel Shield (+2 AC) “Large” Flaming Mighty (+4) Composite Longbow (+11/6 | 2d6+1d6 x3) Armor: Large Mithril “Chain Shirt” Barding +2 (Light Armor, +4 AC, +5 Max Dex, AC Penalty –1, Enhancement +2) Misc: Other gear hasn't been bought yet- have approx 9000gp left to spend. I plan to take Spirited Charge as my next feat, and maybe Improved Critical (Greatsword) and/or (Heavy Lance). Awesome Blow sounds pretty fun- I’m getting visions of launching enemies off of cliffs, into lava, etc… Ride-By Attack is fun for centaurs- it essentially works as something like Spring Attack without all the pre-reqs. I’m not entirely sure what to take after getting to level 5 or 6 of Holy Liberator, though. The spells are fairly nice, but since there aren’t anymore fun class features to be had, I was thinking that perhaps there’d be better options in another class? I don’t terribly like the Contemplative class for this character, though I could see it work, I guess… She’s more like a bounty hunter of sorts, going around and freeing people from oppression, capturing criminals and whatnot. I don’t see her stopping and pondering deeply the missives of any given god, really. I guess she could be extremely devoted to the philosophy of Freedom, but I just can’t quite see it working. And besides, I’d prefer to keep her BAB up as high as possible if I can anyway. :D I could pick up some more ranger levels, which wouldn’t completely suck, but are a little blah. I’d just as soon take some Rogue levels if I wanted the skill points or Fighter if I wanted bonus feats… My DM tends to be NPC-heavy, so Favored Enemy (Human) works pretty well- I’ll probably be getting the bonus on at least 60-70 percent of the fights I’d get into- but that by itself isn’t really cool enough to make me want more levels of ranger. The Bloodhound and Watch Detective PrC’s from Masters of the Wild sound pretty well darn close to what my character actually does, ie. bounty hunting/criminal tracking type work, but they’re not exactly the world’s best classes mechanically. I guess they could work, but in the end I’d just be taking them for flavor purposes, which sort of defeats the purpose of min/maxing, doesn’t it? :P Just kidding. :D Anybody got any other ideas as for where to take this char? Thanks. |
| Ranthanas10-02-03, 07:59 AM | If you're already a melee Holy Liberator, you can't go too far wrong with a level of Templar for +1BAB, weapon specialisation and the Mettle ability (as Evasion except for Fort and Will saves- both of which are going to be pretty good). You'd probably want an extra level of Ranger to take Templar as Endurance is a pre-requisite. |
| Boondoggle10-02-03, 08:12 PM | Check out the Shadow Scout in OA. I think it might be right up your alley. |
| Eagle Prince10-03-03, 03:13 PM | A really insanely powerful Centaur is with the Geomancer class. You pick up all those extra natural weapons, get that spell from SS that lets you pounce. There is another Multiattack feat in SS that completely removes all penatlies for using extra natural weapons. Then if you can pick up Rideby Attack and Spirited charge, that's just icing on the cake. If you got a good Str score, you could get Power Lunge also. The end result is some freaky looking dude just like the Centaur in Warcraft 3, with gobs and gobs of attacks all at full BAB. If you got Power Lunge and Spirited Charge, then you can also charge the first round, make all of your attacks at full BAB and double Str bonus, and then double all that damage b/c spirited charge. Oh yeah, and you'll be a pretty good spellcaster too. |
| LordShade10-03-03, 07:30 PM | I like the Geomancer idea for Warcraft's Keeper of the Grove. However, centaurs also gained great fame as Knights in Shining Force. Shining Force inspired me to suggest the Cavalier as the optimal PrC for Centaur. How about Centaur6/Rgr2/HL3/Cavalier9 You will be able to whale on the bad guys, especially since HL3 allows you to add Divine Might on your charges. |
| Boondoggle10-03-03, 09:23 PM | You will be able to whale on the bad guys Hehe, I'm picturing a centaur wielding an orca & smacking people with it... I think you mean 'wail.' :D Oh, and cavalier won't work. He's not lawful. I also don't particularly like the class for a centaur. The ride bonus is wasted, heavy armor is quite limiting & the feel of the PrC seems wrong for centaurs. The extra attack & damage from the lance is nice, as is the full attack after the mount has moved, but I think it works better for an actual mounted character. |

| widow10-06-03, 10:08 PM | Try running this by your gm. See if you can get and use a set of Horse Shoes of Flame. They are found in the savage speices book. They add to cha, int, and dex as unnamed bonuses. Also they give 1d4 Fire damage to hoove attacks and a fly speed of 90. Techniquelly these are only for horses, but it would be funny on a centaur. If nothing else you can always pick up Use Magic Device to use these horse shoes. I dont know how useful you will find these but they are alot of fun. I used them with my wizard since they give a +10 to intellegence. |
| phaedron10-06-03, 10:31 PM | Take Fleet of Foot, in one of the splat books. It allows you to make 1 turn of up to 90 degrees while charging. Spirited charge is essential too, and Power Lunge is good too. |
