Apply armor bonus to touch attack? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-26-06, 02:21 PM I was wondering if anyone knew of any feats or abilities that allowed you to apply your armor bonus to your touch ac. I am only aware of one similar feat called Parrying Shield from Lords of Madness.

04-26-06, 02:25 PM The feat is called "Deflective Armor", it's from Races of Stone. It requires Heavy Armor Optimization as a prereq, and gives you your armor's AC bonus (including enhancements) vs. touch attacks as well as regular ones. It works while you are psionically focused, which means that one level of any psychic class will let you pick it up--alternatively, the feat "Wild Talent" will give a PP and the ability to attain psionic focus.

04-26-06, 07:16 PM I dunno about armor bonus but there's a spell called Scintillating Scales that turns your natural armor bonus into a deflection bonus.

Now I have a quick question for you about this one. I don't have my RoS on me, else I would just look this up.

The Twist Cloth requires an exotic armor proficiency.
When you're not profecient with the armor you're wearing, you apply the Armor Check penalty to all Attack Rolls, Str based checks, and Dex based checks.
Twist Cloth has No Armor Check Penalty.

So what reason is there for you to actually take Profeciency with this armor?

Twist Cloth specifically says that the AC applies to touch attacks only if you have the proficiency. You can very well wear one for +1 AC, but it will not apply to touch attacks.

You also add its enhancement bonus to touch AC. +5 Gnome twist cloth adds +6 to touch AC (and regular AC).

04-28-06, 08:06 PM For a hard-to-touch tank my favorite methodology involves "Wild Talent" + "Deflective Armor". At that point every last bit of AC from armor applies to your touch AC for a mere 2 feats. For a typical warrior, this is a drop in the bucket that leaves room for many additions. Gear-wise, mithril full-plate, a large shield, and a + dex item (you should have some slack in your dex score wearing mithril) will hook you up nicely.

IMHO, the twist cloth is most useful for spellcasters who can easily apply one of the usual tricks to remove the mere 5% ASF associated with the gnomish armor.

Per page 141 of the Player's Handbook (©2003 Wizards of the Coast™, Inc.), "Your opponent's AC against a touch attack does not include any armor bonus, shield bonus, or natural armor bonus. His size modifier, Dexterity modifier and deflection bonus (if any) all apply normally." Based on the description of mage armor and shield, I do not believe either of those spells would apply to touch AC since they are, respectively, armor and shield bonuses. The vast majority of magic items that add to AC, however, add dodge, deflection, unnamed, etc. bonuses. Only items and spells that add to armor, shield or natural armor would be exempt from touch AC.

As noted above and in prior posts, you can spend a few feats to get armor and shield bonuses to touch AC, and you can use a spell to add your natural armor to AC. Hooray for bypassing the PHB!
