i'm making a character for the ptolus campaign setting that's based on aramis from the three musketeers. he'll be a priest (ranks in knowledge religion, no cleric lvls) and a fighter. i'm going w/ swashbuckler to start, probably at least to lvl 3.
as a human i've got 2 weapon fighting and 2 weapon defense and am planning on taking exotic weapon proficiency: firearms at 3rd lvel. i see him wielding a rapier and dagger, a rapier and pistol, or two pistols at any given time. i want him to be a good fighter but also want to pay a little attention to his social skills, he's got a high int. so i've got ranks in bluff, diplomacy, and sense motive that i don't want to ignore.

does this look like a good start? any suggestions on what to change or where to go from there?

thanks!

Two weapon defense is a bad, bad feat.
Suggested replacements:
Combat Expertise
Dodge (if going for anything on that tree)
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Quickblade Rapier) if going for Expertise/Improved Disarm anyway

I'd list Improved Buckler Defense, but Swashbucklers aren't proficient with bucklers? Whaaaaa???

You could try something like this:

1 Feat Rogue Able Learner, Two weapon fighting, Dodge
2 Swashbuckler Weapon Finesse
3 Swashbuckler EWP Pistol
4 Swashbuckler Insightful Strike
5 Feat Rogue Mobility
6 Fighter Spring Attack, Improved Buckler Defense
7 Fighter Improved Two weapon Fighting
8 Fighter
9 Fighter Elusive Target, Weapon Focus Rapier
10 Tempest
11 Tempest
12 Tempest Greater Two weapon Fighting
13 Tempest
14 Tempest
15 Feat Rogue Bounding Assault
16 Feat Rogue Weapon Specialization (Rapier)
17 Feat Rogue
18 Feat Rogue Melee Weapon Mastery (Piercing), Improved Critical (Rapier)
19 Feat Rogue
20 Feat Rogue Rapid Blitz

4 attacks on a spring attack, weapon focus, specialization, improved critical and weapon mastery with both your rapier and dagger, int to damage, lots of skills, improved buckler defense for decent AC, Able Learner for your Knowledge Religion (and all those levels in between rogue) and EWP pistol so you can bang bang (although it is sub-optimal, but it is there). It's not the greatest build, but it is decent for the flavor of a musketeer.

thanks everybody that's a lot of help. i am however confused by:

feat rogue

why take rogue 1st, how do i get 3 feats at 1st lvl and why did you write "feat"? sorry i'm not very hip to the CO lingo.

thanks again.

so here's what i'm thinkin':

1 swashbuckler weapon finesse, two weapon fighting, combat expertise
2 swashbuckler grace+1
3 swashbuckler insightful strike, ewp: firearms
4 fighter improved disarm
5 fighter weapon focus rapier
6 swashbuckler, improved two weapon fighting
7 fighter
8 fighter weapon focus dagger
9 swashbuckler dodge bonus +1, crescent moon [style] (i'm assuming my dm will let me use a rapier for this feat)

is this any good? where would i go from here? both the improved buckler defense and ewp: quickblade look good but i'm not sure where to put them. i realize the firearms thing is dragging me down but i really wanna shoot some stuff.

Well, if you really want to shoot stuff and can fit in a few levels of cleric, doesn't the Technology domain give firearms proficiency?

Too bad the Skillful mod (CA) only applies to melee weapons...

As far as classes go try the following:
Swash 3/Fighter 4/Ranger 2/

You really lose nothing & gain a feat & some skill points. Alternatively go for a prc after swash 3/fighter 2/ranger 2.
