After perusing the archives of this forum and other WotC forums, you'll see that you don't really gain much optimization value from being an AA. If you *must* take the PrC, 2 levels of it will give you the pretty nifty ability of Imbue Arrows. Which is a nice ability, but far from being powerful. The GMW aspect of the AA's other class abilities are much better served by having your friendly local Cleric or full-level Wizard do this for you at hardly any cost to them whatsoever. It's just smarter resource management. I need some advice to min/max this pc, an arcane archer... My group and I use only the core books and the FR campaign setting 3.5 , so I'm limited to the main prcs... If you really like the Ranger/Sorceror AA angle ... and you are using FR material, try these builds (feel free to alter the progression if you wish): Ranger-6 / Sorceror-2 / Harper Agent-5 / Harper Mage-5 / Arcane Archer-2 BAB +13, 5th Level Sorc Spells Ranger-8 / Sorceror-2 / Harper Agent-4 / Geomancer-4 / Arcane Archer-2 BAB +17, 4th Level Sorc Spells Or variations thereof. But at least that gives you an idea as to some good Ranger/Sorc angles that get you som significant class goodies besides GMW. Which again, is a poor compensation for investments into higher levels of AA. The builds above are also extremely strong in their skill suites. Worth looking at... XO, Snow :cloud9: |
| Isthramir06-15-04, 01:02 PM | Burning hands is a very nice choice for a 1st level spell. I played an AA in a 3.0 game a while back, and the bulk of both my first and second level spells were burning hands. My 3.0 build was Rogue 4/ Wizard - 5/ Arcane Archer 3. He was fun to play and I liked him a lot. I even tried to continue playing him after he lost all his equipment including his spellbook ... but that didn't work out so well. If you GM lets you change the orientation of the spell like mine did I think you might find lightning bolt a better choice than fireball. True strike is a decent choice, and I found silence useful. AA might not be an optimized choice ... but I think it's a fun class. |
| DreadfulCaptain06-15-04, 02:06 PM | Thanks for the suggestions... the truth is my group is dead and I don't know what to do... I was just thinking about this build... maybe i will do a druid or something else... I'll check the "character optimization thread 3.5", thanks again.. |

| CrusadeDave06-15-04, 04:51 PM | In my two campaigns, we play with some modifications to the AA requirements. I saw this first in the game I was playing, and migrated it to the game I DM. New or changed requirements in Bold Race: Elf or Half Elf BAB: +6 Feats: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Weapon Focus (Any Bow) Spells: Able to cast Magic Weapon, or Magic Fang. This allows Paladin 4/Fighter 2 and Ranger 4/Fighter 2 to qualify for the class with full BAB, with a minimum Wisdom of 12. Ranger 6 and Paladin 6 qualify with minimum Wisdom of 11. Through playing I have found that this allows the AA to focus on being the master archer. Doesn't have as many feats as a Fighter 20, but you've got plenty for Multi-Shot, Improved Precise Shot, Imrpoved Critical, Weapon Specialization, Greater Weapon Focus, should be rather easy to get your attack up to +40 with that sucker. All of a sudden, +5 for free, and Hail of Arrows means that Distance, Flaming, Shocking, Frost, Corrosive, Holy, +1 Composite Longbow of Speed looks pretty epic, considering it's always shooting +5 arrows. Plus at Epic Levels, it starts shooting +6 arrows, and gets Damage Penetration Epic. Physical Damage should be able to get to 1d8+12 pretty easily. With guaranteed 6 attacks per round... not bad at all. |
