| Mommy was an Orc12-25-04, 10:12 AM | Something interesting I noticed in Complete Arcane was the use of Arcane Caster 1st in a couple of PrCs to qualify - Green Star Adept in particular. And there are several feats that give 1st level caster with 3 spells. Now I'm not sure as to the real benefit of this. You don't actually have a caster class, so there's nothing to advance. But 4 levels of Green Star Adept does give some decent benefits. The bizarre thing of course is that the feats which are obviously arcane, don't actually spell out that they're arcane caster 1... |
| Tweedledope12-25-04, 12:30 PM | With those feats though you don't gain any spellcasting ability. You only gain them as spell-like abilities. So, as rule of thumb, I would say no they wouldn't work. |

I swear some people <Custserv included> should really read the book before answering questions about it, yes you do in fact qualify for green star adept's caster level requirement with those feats |
| charlesatan12-25-04, 09:38 PM | Actually you do qualify since Green Star Adept lists spell or spell-like abilities as a prerequisite. Those feats also mention that they're cast as a 1st level caster. |
| widow12-25-04, 10:08 PM | Ha, just suck it up and be a white dragon spawn. Gives you that one caster level you need for an adjustment of +1 and +4 stats, 7 natural armor, fligt, breath weapon, etc. |

| allenchan12-26-04, 12:14 AM | If thats the case, just be a gnome. Their racial spell-like abilities are considered arcane caster level 1. Says so on page 17 of the PHB |
| charlesatan12-26-04, 04:05 AM | Where is that template found? From Dragonlance Campaign setting. Interestingly enough, where the Star Metal special material first popped up (albeit without the effectiveness against extraplanar creatures). |
| evilgenius12-26-04, 03:51 PM | Though without the arcane caster LEVELS (and spell casting or spell like ability) you are missing out on a major plus for the GSA's class features; Increase in spellcasting each second level. If that's the case, and you're giving up a good five levels of casting which you would get anyways with the GSA, you may as well just dip a single level of Wizard / Sorc / Warlock / Bard or something similar. My $0.02 anyways. L8er evilgenius |

Spell-like abilities provide only a "Caster Level" and thus qualify you for some feats and PrCs that only have a "Caster Level" Prerequisite, such as the The Acolyte of the Skin PrC or the Craft X Feats. Otherwise, please point me out where any feats actually provides "Arcane Caster Levels" -- as far as I can see, they only provide "Caster Levels." I read the PHB (good read) and pg 17 says that gnomes have a Caster Level for spell-like abilities, not Arcane Caster Level. Of course you'll want to argue that Caster Level = Arcane Caster Level but that's not true anyway. |
| Mommy was an Orc12-27-04, 10:26 AM | While that's true if you're going the whole 10 levels, my thinking was more along the lines of a melee FullBAB type who wants to have a +19 BAB, +2 Strength, -1 Dex, and DR Adamant/4 + other things. The problem for a melee FullBAB type is the 4 level dip isn't worth that much if you have to lose 2 BAB to do it. | Zubon12-27-04, 12:02 PM | Hmm, what classes and PrCs are good for a dip to get an arcane caster level? Hexblade 3 is a popular enough prefix, so Hexblade 4 could be a lead-in to Green Star Adept that still has +19 BAB at level 20. That could work for the non-good. For the non-warriors attempting this, say a skill monkey, there are PrCs like Fatemaker from the Planar Handbook that offer level 1-4 arcane spells. Most of the classes like that have at best +3/4 BAB, though, and frequently have a selection of divine spells (like the Ranger and Paladin). |
| Mommy was an Orc12-27-04, 12:53 PM | The problem with Hexblade 4 is that it occupies valuable space. If you're getting a 10 level PrC in addition to GSA, that leaves only 6 levels for the initial part of the build. Also, there's the need for a 12+ Charisma...
