I had decided to try a arcane caster for an upcoming campaign since it is something I haven't tried playing one before. I was wondering if you guys at the Character optimization boards could give me a basic layout for a arcane user, that wouldn't be too bogged down or confusing for someone who hasn't had much experience with magic. I am looking for something well rounded.

My stat roll: 16 12 11 14 11 13.

Level: We are still working it out. It will likely be somewhere from 1 to 5.

I am new to this forum, so if I made any mistakes, or if I left out any needed info, let me know.

Books open and party dynamics would be nice.

A nice introduction to arcane casters is the Sorcerer. They're pretty easy to play thanks to the ease of spells gained and the lack of choices. If you throw up books open and your preferances for a theme/build we can help more.

The books availiable to you would be very helpful to know.

I agree with GaffeR - a Sorcerer is very nice to play for a beginner, but if you're just limited to core, your prestige class options are pretty much nonexistant. As far as spell selection goes, at 5th level mine would probably look something like this, aiming for a general utility build:

0th: Detect magic, Read Magic, Prestidigitation, +3 Others

1st: Magic Missile, Mage Armour, Sleep (Swap out for Grease at 4th level) and probably Charm Person

2nd: Scorching Ray, and Alter Self (although Hideous Laughter is a good choice if you don't want to get into the complexities involved with polymorphing).

It is a seperate entity, but it's bound to your sorceror through a magical ritual. Use the base statistics from the Monster Manual and adjust them according to the table in the Phb.

For Hit Points, the familiar has one-half the master’s total hit points (not including temporary hit points), rounded down. Normally, familiars don't gain HD so they don't get any feats or extra skill points. Their effective HD is treated as their masters level (for effects dependant on HD.)

As far as how to use them, the following links provide excellent suggestions on how to utilize your little companion to it's fullest potential. The most important being, IMO, the ability to share the spells you cast on yourself with your familiar, increasing it's effectiveness greatly.
