| SlatzGrubnik12-07-06, 12:38 AM | The group i play with, play on monday nights... last monday, my character died, and i need to make a new one by monday... I also need to be an arcane caster, Im open for ideas... i'd like to be a *boomboom* mage, if that help anyone... I simply cannot think, and dont have the time for it really, as i have homework (AJAX is fun...) to finish by thursday and i work friday-sunday... i really dont want to do this last minute, or take focus off work... which is why im posting this... Please everyone, have fun :) and point me to anyplace you need, suggest anything you want |
| Tenebrous_Sage12-07-06, 12:40 AM | Blasters are rarely optimal. That said I suggest you read the Posting Guidelines. |
| Animae_Draconum12-07-06, 12:58 AM | As said by T_S follow the posting guidelines, we optimize a build you present us with. We do not make your characters for you. That said, I must also second the statement that blasters are hardly ever optimal. |
| SlatzGrubnik12-07-06, 12:59 AM | Sorry for that: Any 3.5 books, no exalted or vile, no evil alignment I would very much like to be an arcane mage.. with no evil alignment, i dont see the point in a necromancer, and if blaster is out, then all that's left is summoner, protector, enchanter and illusionist.. To be honest, i'd like to be able to do everything but i just cant, given the 12th level restriction.. It's a faerun setting, sorta.. it's in the same world, but in a relatively new island-country... so, it's a bit tribal/barbaric/low-magic for the area... Im trying to replace my recently deceased elf wizard 12... Any ideas would be kindly appreciated... |

That said, I must also second the statement that blasters are hardly ever optimal. Again sorry, im new to this part of the forums: The stanard route i usually go is Human or Elf Wizard, item creation feats out the wazoo, and the xp/time/gp reducing feats from eberron (any feat goes really, except exalted/vile).. then i focus on making golems, and have them fight for me... if i dont have enough time for that, i make scrolls/wands/weapons/armour for the party... when i have time for it however.. |
| Tenebrous_Sage12-07-06, 02:13 AM | If you like having other creatures fight for you be an enchanter or Conjuror. |
| Hanniball12-07-06, 02:20 AM | Making a Blaster Mage is all about spell and feat selection. Class has little to do with it, but there are a couple classes who's abilities can be very useful to a blaster. The Archmage's Mastery of Elements is almost essential and the Incantarix can provide all the metamagic feats you need and allot for instant application of said feats 2/day. The Elemental Savant is a natural choice, though I hate being limited to one element. Some good feats to consider are: Quicken Spell for multiple blasts/round, Twin Spell for even more blasts/round, Empower Spell for a little more damage, Arcane Mastery for overcoming SR, and Chain Spell for targeting multiple foes with a single target blast spell. Either way...just my 2 cp |
| SlatzGrubnik12-07-06, 09:53 AM | Ok, my standard build would look like: Human Wizard 12 H:Skill Focus (Craft (Alchemy)) 1:Skill Focus (Craft (Sculpting)) 3:Craft Wonderous Item 5:Craft Arms and Armour 6:Craft Construct 9:Exceptional Artisan (Craft Construct) 10:Legendary Artisan (Craft Construct) 12:Extraordinary Artisan (Craft Construct) Exactly how 'optimal' is this really? Sure, i'd like to be a controller/enchanter type.. this is usually how i see that |
| PhoenixInferno12-07-06, 01:05 PM | Um...I usually like to see Spell Focus (Enchantment) for a "controller/enchanter" type... |
| SlatzGrubnik12-07-06, 01:29 PM | I didnt realize it but two of those eberron item creation reducing feats (gp and xp) are covered in the PGtF called Magical Artisan.. so that gives me an extra feat... Also, i noticed on the boards, that a lot of wizard builds dont go past lvl 5 wizard... |
| Animae_Draconum12-07-06, 01:31 PM | if you have a faerun setting then my vote goes to Elf Wizard Wiz5/Incantatrix3/Spellguard of Silverymoon4 both PrC's are in the players guide to faerun the ability to cast personal spells on your allies is VERY GOOD What makes up the rest of your party the more info you provide us with the better fit your char will be. A_D |
| Animae_Draconum12-07-06, 01:35 PM | And yes PrC's are your friend, they add power but also flavor and make the character more unique so it not just another wizard its XXXXX. |
| Phoenix0012-07-06, 02:34 PM | For blaster I see effectively three routes. A Shadowcraft Mage/Killer Gnome. A Incantatrix/Arcane Thesis Build. A Unseen Seer/Arcane Trickster build Those are the three more or less efficient blaster mages. Blasters aren't always the best but those three builds can do it relatively well. |

A_D Well, currently we have a Human Monk that will be leaving soon (in game), being replaced with a druid. A Raptoran Fighter (kinda doesnt know whats really going on lol, a bit ranged, a bit melee). And a Moon Elf Cleric (only healer). |

Where is Shadowcraft Mage from? |
| Phoenix0012-07-06, 03:55 PM | Shadow Craft Mage is from Races of Stone, its a gnome prestige class. Two good threads are here. http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=290914 The one discovering the potential http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=655556 The handbook Main Arcane thesis thread is here. Most arcane thesis builds also use incantatrix http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=707606 Complete Mage has made an US/AT build viable. The best one is as follows Rogue 1/Wizard 5/US 4/AT 4/US 6 Take Practiced Spellcaster with this build, and grab Hunter's Eye and persist it from PHB2. |
| Animae_Draconum12-07-06, 04:42 PM | Take the Spellguard option and get as many transmutation spells as you can as well as some utility. make your allies big yourself big and cheap metamagic with incantatrix eventually A_D |

A_D just to specify in case the guy doesn't know, Elf Wiz here for the Elven Substitution Lvls, first lvl at least, for the increased spell knowledge benifits (heck the 3rd lvl sub is nice as well if yer gonna have a familer). and as to the line up here, personally I'd drop a lvl of Incarnix here and take the 5th lvl of Spellguard for 2 reasons, one it'll increase caster lvl by 1 for everything but extra spells which is GUD!!!(esspecially as the character here is either just high enough or one lvl shy of boosting caster lvl again with the use of Create Magical Tattoos spell) and for RP purposes that have had you leave the services of Silverymoon so that you can fully strike out on your own. |

Agreed, the 3rd Incantatrix level can wait til you level up to 13. Finishing the Spellguard Classflows better for backstory continuity and the +1 CL is nice A_D |
| SlatzGrubnik12-08-06, 01:44 AM | Thank you very much for that, the Spellguard of Silverymoon/Incantrix/Wizard looks very appealing |
| SlatzGrubnik12-08-06, 02:05 AM | However, would Cooperative Metamagic apply to divine spellcasting allies? |
| Animae_Draconum12-08-06, 02:49 AM | However, would Cooperative Metamagic apply to divine spellcasting allies? Yes, RAW do not limit you to arcane only, the same is also true for the Metamagic Effect ability. A word of advice though... spend the gold for the Spellcraft competence boost custom item, the DC's can get pretty damn hard to pass without them. Reasons to get Persistant Spell True Strike Wraith Strike Ruin Delvers Fortune Heroics Indomitability(multiple castings overlap, each resolving their effect when activated) Night Stalkers Transformation Draconic Might Bite of the Were(insert animal) Resist Energy Mass Shapechange Time Stop(24 hrs to rest and recover spells is cheesy but it could save your entire party) Enjoy A_D |
| Endarire12-08-06, 03:23 AM | Officially, time stop isn't persistable. Also, by the time you get shapechange, extending it gives you more benefit for fewer resources. -EE |
| Yorath_theWolf12-08-06, 10:01 AM | persist is good, but not for Night Stalkers Transformation. the reason, like Tensnor's Transformation, you loose casting ability while transformed. this is NEVER of the good, or at least never for long periods of time. |

A word of advice though... spend the gold for the Spellcraft competence boost custom item, the DC's can get pretty damn hard to pass without them. Would this be similar to items such as Ring of Jumping/Swimming/Climbing? Also, What would the complete 20 level progression for the Wizard/Incantrix/Spellguard of Silveryguard look like? Would i continue with Incantrix? |
| Animae_Draconum12-08-06, 06:17 PM | persist is good, but not for Night Stalkers Transformation. the reason, like Tensnor's Transformation, you loose casting ability while transformed. this is NEVER of the good, or at least never for long periods of time. You dont use Night stalkers on yourself its for your allies, same with tensers transformation The full progression for the build is Wiz 5/incantatrix 2/spellguard 5/incantatrix 8 The above is not optimized, it is a somewhat powerful flavor build that will not steal the show in comparison to the rest of the party |
| SlatzGrubnik12-08-06, 07:40 PM | Well, it is just what our party needs, imo :) i like it very much, however, what would it look like 'optimized'? |
| Yorath_theWolf12-08-06, 07:54 PM | Well, it is just what our party needs, imo :) i like it very much, however, what would it look like 'optimized'? probably a lvl of Mindbender to give ya free telepathy, &/or choseing a school to specialize in and heading into the Master Specialist PrC, or more Incarnix less if any Spellguard. without a deffent dirrection in mind, it's kinda hard to answer that. |
| SlatzGrubnik12-08-06, 08:54 PM | Well, thank you to everyone that replied to my inital question, and i am very satisfied for the resulting Wizard/Incantar/Spellguard... Even though it may not be 'optimized', it's perfect for the campaign, and even better for the party.. and im sure i'll have loads of fun RPing it :) |
| Tleilaxu_Ghola12-08-06, 09:10 PM | Grey Elf: Focused Specialist Conjurer 3/Master Specialist 9 Feats: (Scribe Scroll), Spell Focus (Conjuration), Spell Penetration, Greater Spell Penetration, (Greater Spell Focus (Conjuration)), Empower Spell, Arcane Thesis (Orb of Fire). The concept: Use orb spells and other various conjuration damaging spells available in Complete Arcane and the Spell Compendium. There are many. Focused Specialist will get you a grand total of +3 spell slots (for conjuration only) per spell level. That means at 12th level, you'll have bunch of conjuration spells available. You'll need to prohibit 3 schools, however. I would prohibit evocation (it's largely redundant with conjuration), necromancy, and illusion. The benefit to focusing on conjuration, as opposed to evocation, is it gives you 3 niches: summoning, direct damage, tactical teleportation. You'll cast all your conjuration spells at 14th CL, your summons will have +14 HP in addition to +4 STR/CON and your summons will have CL 19 for the purposes of dispel checks against them. Your main blaster spell will be orb of fire. Due to your PrC and the Arcane Thesis feat, you'll cast it at 16th CL meaning you'll max out the damage at 15d6. Throw on empower (it only bumps the slot cost by 1 thanks to arcane thesis) and you've got 21d6 worth of damage. No save, no SR. There is a saving throw against the Daze effect, however. Again you should be well optimized for that, given your racial +2 to int and +2 from school focuses. For multiple foes, there are a number of other spells. Skim through CArc, SpC, and your PHB. I promise you won't be disappointed in the selection of damaging conjuration spells. |
| SlatzGrubnik12-08-06, 10:52 PM | thank you for that, i'll keep it in mind :) |
| Endarire12-12-06, 06:18 PM | Arcane Mastery is probably better than Spell Penetration as AM lets you take 10. Combined with assay resistance, that's +20. -EE |
