Arcane Ranger

I was looking through champions of Valor and found something that really touched a cord with me,

The order of the shooting star - a group of rangers that serve mystra.

Not a fan of the god, but I am a fan and what they represent.

Namely an Arcane Ranger

Fan of the old ultima games where rangers were arcane, and always remember foundly to the old 1st edition where rangers got mu spells.

what would be the most optimized means of getting this concept across?

I have the following books available, but may get access to others.

PHB
DMG
MM
Arms and Equipment guide. (3.0)
Planar Handbook
Book of exalted deeds
Forgotten Realms campaign set (3.0)
Players guide to faerun
MAgic of faerun (3.0)
Champions of valor
Races of Faerun
Shining South
Silver Marches
Races of stone
Races of destiny
Unearthed Arcana
Complete Warrior
Complete Arcane
Complete Divine
Complete Adventurer

Any ideas?

I am trying to remember does this substitution option/feat change your caster level to your hd instead of 1/2 your hd like the normal ranger?

No, it allows you to treat your caster level as 1/2 your ranger level +2, but if you have other arcane caster levels from another class, you can add them to the above to determine your overall ranger caster level.

You can use your paladin and ranger spell slots to prepare wizard spells. You must have a minimum Int... yada yada.
These wizard spell can be taken either from your spellbook (if you have one) or from another character's spellbook (though in the later case yuou must decipher yada yada yada).
If you also have levels in wizard, your wizard caster level is treated as the sum of your wizard, paladin and ranger class levels.

I reccomend the Mystic Ranger variant from Dragon Magazine, it gets to cast 5th level Ranger spells... ooooohhh. Check http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20

substitution levels are as follows.

3rd instead of endurnance can send short messages to another mystra cleric, palladin or ranger.

4th instead of a familiar, they gain a bonus spell slot at 4th - 1st level, 8th - 2nd level, 11- 3rd level and 14th - 4th level.

Also at 4th level, they cast spells as ranger 1/2 +2.

Instead of swift tracking, they get see invisibility and word of recall to their spell list.

Additionally they are then elligable at 4th level to the feat: Sword of the arcane order.

They can prep wizard spells based on intelligence instead of standard ranger spells- if they have a spell book. Also their ranger casting stacks with wizard spellcasting level overall.

I think its a nice substitution level. Obviously, the key would be to get your hands on good arcane spells in your spellbook, like True Strike. The real trick I think is that you gain access to arcane spell trigger/completion items
