I'm looking for some help to improve on a potentially one-shot character (In 3.0). The thief and bard in our campaign are heading south to Teziir/Westgate for the winter, to do some investigation on one of our main foes, while our spellcasters stay north for various reasons, and I'm creating a character to play with them while they're there.

The basic concept I'm thinking of is an arcane thief, a tiefling who's main source of income is sneaking into wizards' homes and snagging stuff. He'll be Rog6/Wiz5, with his main magic items being a ring of invis., leather armor of silent moves +2 (I know this causes a chance of spell failure, but I think that works with what I have in mind). He's more likely to try to avoid being seen and/or avoiding combat if at all possible. While he will have fireball and lightning bolt, I really see him focusing much more on spells that affect him, improving his chance of getting in and out without being discovered.

Obviously, it's not the most optimal build of all time, but our group focuses more on role-playing than roll-playing, so that's not a problem. I'm just trying to get some guidance in terms of what feats should I pick. I haven't played many arcane casters, but I figured spellcasting prodigy was a given and that silent spell made sense. I don't know if it makes sense to bother with spell focus since most of the spells will be cast on himself, not enemies. I was thinking of specializing as a diviner, since I don't think he really needs necromantic spells.

Any suggestions on magic items is also appreciated. What I've got in mind so far beyond the aforementioned ring and armor: slippers of spider-climbing, a weapon of some sort, possibly a spellbreaker (stolen from Stephen Brust's books, basically a chain that would allow dispel magic three times per day) ...

Thanks in advance for any help.

well, you might want to look at the Arcane Trickster - just 3 levels of rogue needed and then you can gain the same progression of sneak attacks and some cool stealing abilities. I was playing this an di really loved the character, however, it didn't get a chance to shine b/c our campaign went to a dead hault at 9th lvl. Since you will already have access to the PrC for 2 lvls, I think you'll find it your best option. There's also the spellthief in Complete Adventurer (also on the wizards.com/dnd website under the previews for that). I would consider playing one of those two options b/c of the way the game progresses. I would suggest Sudden Maximize just b/c i love that combination with a fireball, however, if you're not doing any damage, don't worry about it. Be sure to take Craft Wondrous Item if you will take Arcane Trickster so that you can create for yourself those items that can help you - boots of elvenkind, cloak of elven kind. If your focus is on skills and sneaking <= I would high suggest Arcane Trickster => get some boots of flying if possible or some other sort of flying equipment b/c you will find that they will be more useful than slippers of spider climb.
