| Shaun O'Braun10-12-03, 03:36 AM | Let me esplain. No, there is too much to esplain. Let me sum up. ;) Wizard 5/Rogue 3 (8th CL) --> Arcane Trickster or Bard 1/Wizard 5/Rogue 1/Spymaster 1 (8th CL) --> Arcane Trickster And now for the summation: For my wizard character, I decided a while ago to start him with one level of bard, then wizard from then on out. It would give 16 more skill points, access to Speak Language (which I dumped 11 points into at first level)*, bardic knowledge (which is really nice for a high-Int character who has lots of knowledge skills and wants to appear as though he knows everything), 1/day bardic music, and a few cantrips. I called it my one-level PrC, and after a level of bard I took one level of wizard. I organized my first bardic skill points so that I could eventually qualify for a level of Mindbender without too much trouble later on. And then I saw the Spymaster PrC. I realized that, with a second level of bard, I could qualify for this PrC. Even better, after four levels of Spymaster I would meet the 2d6 sneak requirement for Arcane Trickster without having to worry about xp penalties for uneven classes with my bard/rogue/wizard mix. And then, the following day, while riding my bike, it hit me. What a dolt I had been to not see it sooner. One level of rogue offered the same skills, and more skill points, than one level of bard, and it would also offer 1d6 sneak! One level of bard, one level of rogue, and I would qualify to take one level of Spymaster which would then (after taking more wizard levels) qualify me for Arcane Trickster! Wow! What a find! The skill points aren't very far off what I wanted anyway, for a Sherlock Holmes-ish character. Let me repeat the summation of that comparison: Wizard 5/Rogue 3 --> Arcane Trickster Wizard 5/Rogue 1/Bard 1/Spymaster 1 --> Arcane Trickster My level of Bard suddenly doesn't detract from my caster level, as I would have lost three caster levels qualifying for Arcane Trickster in any case, and I get to be an Arcane Trickster with decent (well, much better than the BDF, anyway) Bluff, Diplomacy, Disguise, Sense Motive, Gather Information, Bardic Knowledge, all those languages, etc. Sure, it takes 25 skill points (and a not-so-bad feat) to qualify, but I was going for a level of Mindbender anyway, so I'd already spent most of those skill points, and what's a "few" skill points to a wizard with the highest Int possible? *As to Speak Language, we see it as just the same as Perform, Craft, or Profession -- you can spend as many skill points as you like at a level, each skill points buying you another language. |

| Hanniball10-12-03, 04:25 PM | not only do you not qualify for spymaster because of your BAB being a measley +2 but even if you did you would never be able to hit anything. that is until CL 12 when you can quicken true strikes a few times a day. i'm a fan of rogue 3/Wiz 5/AT 10 or rog 3/wiz 5/ Guild thief 1/AT 10. either way...just my 0.02 cp |
