I'm about to play an Archivist. Okay, actually a Rogue/Monk/Swashbuckler/Archivist (see my signature). Obviously, with four classes we're using the house rule to multi-class freely.

My question is not about how to begin a 1st character level Archivist, but if anyone has any tips on how to equip one. I've never played a magic-user before, and I'm not too sure what items would help.

Also, as far as spells go, any tips as to adding to my prayerbook?

And finally, while I'm about to take my first level of Archivist, are there other classes that it would help to dip into to make the Archivist that much better?

I'll leave the equipment and spell selection advice to those who're more capable than myself, but understand the biggest piece of advice you'll get is to not multi-class as a caster at all.

You're planning on playing an Archivist, but you're going to dilute his power by taking 3 other classes that have nothing to do with magic. You'll find yourself outfought, outskilled, and outspelled by most everyone, both in your party and out.

Now, that's not to say you shouldn't run with your concept, it's just a fair warning of what you'll be told.

My advice is to figure out why you want to use those classes (Rogue, Monk, and Swashbuckler), then look over the various spell lists you have access to (Players Handbook, Complete Divine, Heroes of Horror, etc) and see if A.) you can't use some of those spells to do things you wanted to do with the other 3 classes and B.) See if you really want to give up some of those higher powered spells for whatever the other classes can give you.

Remember, every 2-3 levels of a class other than Archivist (or a caster prestige class) will cost you a full level of spells. So one level in each of the other 3 puts you at 8th level spells. 2 puts you at 7th. 3 each puts you down to 4th. You get the point.

I get your point, and I understood that. I'm all ready playing this character, however, it isn't a choice at this point of what classes to take at what level. My question regarding class with Archivist was if any would help the Archivist class out more than if I were to take another level in it.

To summarize my character, he was a young rogue who constantly got into trouble. His father sent him away to the monestary for them to teach him some discipline. He learned a lot from the monks, but mostly how to be a better thief. Focusing on finesse and grace, he found the swashbuckler nature came easy to him.

All of those three classes had great synergy. The Archivist doesn't, but it plays well into his personality with being inquisitive and fascinated by ancient works, and my character all ready carried around a notebook and took notes on anything noteworthy. As an Archivist, I'll just be calling his notebook a prayerbook.

So... its like I've been playing an Archivist through most of this campaign, I just haven't been getting the rewards of playing one (tactics, spells, saves). ;)
