Archivists can Auto-Stun Minor Deities [Archive] - Wizards Community

Divine Rank 0 Deities are outsiders not immune to stunning. An 12th level Archivist with 15 ranks in Knowledge(Planes) and a 24 Intelligence has a base of +22. Add +2 for the bonus to put that at +24. Get a +10 Item of Knowledge(Planes).

That means you can't fail a DC 35 Knowledge(Planes) check. Which means the Divine Rank 0 Deity will automatically be stunned. As the 12th level Archivist can keep this up for 6 rounds, there's a fair chance of a 12th level party being capable of taking out a minor deity. And it is only a move action, so the Archivist can cast spells while doing this.

(edit: ah, only for 1 round - still...just have everyone be an archivist or take one as a cohort)

How's that for broken...

I pointed that out Friday night on the "official class" thread. Broken, innit? :)

Didn't see that - first day I've had to really look over that class. Maybe if it was a standard action instead of a move ;)

But something like that deserves its own thread just on that basis alone...

It's my theory that the Archivist is intended for a Call of the Cthulhu-esque campaign, in which case being able to stun a minor deity would be a very, very handy talent.

Uh-oh, Pun-Pun's in trouble now! :rofl:BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Think the R&D people at WotC designed this as an anti-PunPun class? That's like the only thing he's still vulnerable to, isn't it?

Using dark knowledge requires a Knowledge check of a type appropriate to the creature faced. A Knowledge (arcana) check reveals secrets of magical beasts, Knowledge (dungeoneering) pertains to aberrations, Knowledge (religion) covers undead, and Knowledge (the planes) applies to outsiders and elementals. The DC of the check is 15. Most of the archivist's dark knowledge abilities increase in effectiveness if he succeeds on his Knowledge check by 10 or more. Dark knowledge can only be used once against any given creature.

And it was such a good idea too... :D

That text doesn't stop it - a particular archivist can only use the ability once - if you have 4 of them, then they can each do it once. Multiple archivists in a party actually make a lot of sense as that drastically reduces total cost.

Cohorts add another few.

And it was such a good idea too... :D

[buffy reference]Reminds me ever so slightly of what Willow does to Glory that one time...[/buffy reference]

Yes, you're probably exactly right. It's more of a "buy us one round to RUN AWAY" than it is "take it down, plan alpha-13!"

What's a Pun-Pun?
Only the most powerful character. EVER. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=491801)

I've described him to friends as what happens when optimizers roll a natural 20. From a post on the psionics boards (where someone was saying things like "Next, head to Baator and slay the Nine." and people were replying "Pun-Pun can do it better"):

Yeah, but mentioning Pun-Pun as the superior in any D&D power experiment has all the elegance and relevance of using "Natural Twenty" in a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=040115). While, yes, something that beats that natural 20 may be a hateful lie, the natural 20 simply isn't part of the same game that most of us are playing. Much like Pun-Pun.
