Archmage Spell Like Ability [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-21-06, 09:54 AM OK - so I am taking my second spell like ability for the archmage class. The first was Dimension Door 4/day.

I am seriously considering taking the Quicken Spell Like Ability feat as well - so I was considering Fly as a distinct possibility.

Other than that option, I am not too interested in taking another movement SLA.

Any reccomendations for the spell to take?

Polymorph, Draconic Polymorph, Polymorph any Object, or Shapechange. Take Quicken SLA, and if it's anything short of Shapechange, grab Assume Supernatural Ability for either Eyebeams or Breath WEapon.

Entirely correct, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it said that Savage Species was developed right alongside the 3.5 rules. Can't remember where, offhand, though.

Still - Shapechange or PAO is very up there for this. I like the idea of popping into Dragon form at the start of combat.

I also considered Time Stop, while it is powerful, thematically it is not as much fun.

As a socrcerer it is very tempting to make it a 9th level spell though. Then I can change out my 9th level spell when I go up a level, and voila - Free Extra spell!

Any other fun options?

I though seriously about that, but I am not sure I want to drop 300XP to get out of a grapple. (Note that the Archmage SLA, unlike other SLAs does still charge the XP.) Given that I have DD as my OTHER SLA, then I started to reconsider LW, but I just can't get past that XP cost. I'd rather pay for it on a scroll and keep it as backup.

Most of the time when I use LW it is for some utility spell anyway.....

Or maybe I am missing something here.

That is another one that I seriously considered for my first SLA, but I took Dimension Door instead. Mainly because I could enlarge it, then spend some a higher spell slot to get it more times per day. I has worked out nicely, but sometimes I do wish I took greater teleport. But I don't think I wanna double up on the porting spells.

Limited wish is a polymorph or draconic polymorph when you need it, it's a teleport when you need it, it's a heal (since heal is a 5th level adept spell) when you need it, it's a raise dead when you need it, and so on. It's basically your Get Out of Jail Free card. The 300 xp really isn't that much to pay by the time you're able to cast it

Granted it's more useful for a wizard than a sorcerer but being able to cast a quickened heal is nice though.

Hmm, I could have sworn it was 3.0, it came out before BoVD didn't it? And that was 3.0. If only there was a list or some proof that wizards provides listing 3.0 and 3.5 books.

07-22-06, 05:24 AM All 3.5 books have a line "This product uses updated material from the v3.5 revision." on the credits page in the front of the book. Savage Species doesnt have it, BoED neither, so both are 3.0. I dont think it will get anymore official than that.

I don't think Greater Anyspell would work. Archmage says you can prepare one of your Arcane spells permanently. The Anyspell spells are Domain spells which I believe would be Divine spells that allow you to prepare an arcane spell in this situation.

If not for that, it'd be a grand fine choice.

07-22-06, 11:36 PM If you take quicken SLA at lv18(the latest possible pre-epic), you can only quicken a 5th lv SLA max. To quicken shapechange, you need to have at least caster lv26. Sure you don't want to take cone of cold or enervation instead? ;)

07-23-06, 06:24 PM if you get a feat at this level you might consider taking Arcane Disciple to get access to the luck domain, and then take miracle. HUGE power and versitility there.
