| Aramil_Delanur02-12-07, 10:12 PM | Hey guys, I'm building an abjurer, and I'm having trouble deciding whether or not to sacrifice some levels of master specialist for archmage levels. abjurer3 master abjurer6 IotSV7 master abjurer(7th) *archmage3 or master abjurer (8-10) Right now, he's in a fairly difficult campaign (characters have a nasty way of being visited by death surprisingly often). I don't know if we will be going to epic levels, so I assume that we will only get to 20. So far, he has the following feats: Improved Initiative - 1 Spell Focus (abj) - 3 Skill Focus (spellcraft) - class G. Spell Focus (abj) - class Craft Wonderous Item - 6 Quicken Spell - 9 If he goes archmage, it'll use up one more feat slot. I want to create someone who is very unlikely to die, but is also good in a party of five (the other characters haven't chosen yet). We're starting at level 10, and we have access to all 3.5 books by wotc any suggestions would be helpful, and try to give resons for choosing one way or another. Thanks a lot, Aramil |

| Fargren02-12-07, 10:28 PM | What are your forbidden schools? |
| Aramil_Delanur02-13-07, 11:51 AM | @fargen, I've banned evocation and enchantment @christopher, I'm a grey elf. I haven't really looked into abjurant champion yet... but if i remember right, they are more of a combat class... I'm going to be the primary arcanist in the party... Edit: ahhh... I see I'll look into the abj champ, but i'm not sure how well i'd be able to work him in... Aramil |
| Frieza-Prexus02-13-07, 08:20 PM | I've been considering the same build type for a while now myself. I plan on just taking IoSV and Master Spec. Arch Mage was tempting , but I just coludn't squeeze it in. I was planning on going Human and taking the focused specialist variant in complete mage for 3 banned schools but even more bonus spells. I was planning on banning necromancy, illusion, and enchanment. 3 Banned schools hurts me badly, but i'm looking for a good challenge. I also planned on working up to reactive counterspell. Again, not too optimal, but it looks fun. I was also planning on taking the magical disruption reserve feat. I'm going to play my guy as a counterspell/anti mage. I'll be focusing on using Reciprical Gyre from the Spell Compendium. My main goal is to have a spell duel that goes something like this: "I challenge you! No buffs before hand! Now if you'll excuse me I need to use the bathroom." *Comes back 5 minutes later with the enemy mage obviously buffed out the wazoo. *buzzer* BAM R. Gyre with 25 levels of buffs up = teh win. |
| Aramil_Delanur02-13-07, 09:25 PM | Thanks for the input... I'll have to remember that for another campaign. Right now, I'm toying around with about three builds: abj-3 master abj-6 IotSV-7 master abj-1 archmage-3 abj-3 master abj-6 IotSV-7 master abj-4 abj-3 master abj-6 IotSV-7 abj champ-2 master abj-1 archmage-1 The first build uses one feat slot, but gives me arcane reach, mastery of shaping, and a spell-like ability. The second doesn't use up a feat, and gives me the ability to cast a personal abj spell as a touch spell. The third build uses up two feat slots, but it allows me to extend and quicken every abjuration spell I can cast, and gives me arcane reach. I'm trying to look at it from a character optimization standpoint, but I don't have quite enough experience to know which is "worth" more... Aramil |
| The Jake02-14-07, 06:43 PM | Its a flavor choice really. I like Arcane Reach and Shaping very much so I lean to the first one. I say builds 1 and 2 are the best. AbjC really doesn't offer that much to the build IMHO. That said, if it does go to epic levels, there is no reason you can't pickup Archmage once you go over 20. But ideally, you want to have one PrC or base class maxed out by epic level. |
