Alright, quoeth the SRD:

Armor Proficiency (Light) [General]
Benefit
When you wear a type of armor with which you are proficient, the armor check penalty for that armor applies only to Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Sleight of Hand, and Tumble checks.

Normal
A character who is wearing armor with which she is not proficient applies its armor check penalty to attack rolls and to all skill checks that involve moving, including Ride.

Special
All characters except wizards, sorcerers, and monks automatically have Armor Proficiency (light) as a bonus feat. They need not select it.

Soooo, you just get Armor Check Penalty to Attacks, and a bunch of skills... Masterwork reduces ACP by one, mithral reduces it by 3. Breastplate has ACP of 4.
So a character without Light/Medium Armor Proficiency(HELLO Shugenya/Psions) can wear a Masterwork Mithral Breastplate without any negatives(besides max Dex of 5 and 15% ASF).

If Mithral and Masterwork don't stack(I didn't see anywhere where it didn't) Masterwork Studded Leather or Mithral Chain Shirt will give you no negatives for wearing them.

If the Mithral Full Plate of Speed in the DMG is any indication, mithral and masterwork in fact do not stack. Or rather, the masterwork bonus is already included in mithral's modifiers, since mithral items are always masterwork.

Welcome to char-op.

What I'm talking about is not for spellcasters, nor is it nearly as expensive. And it's CORE. And I'm far from new to Char-op. =P

Mithral is already Masterwork. The two do not stack.

You may be far from new at CharOp (hell, I've helped work on some projects with you, IIRC), this is a very old trick. (My current psion wears leather armor, for instance, which will one day be enhanced with armor abilities. She uses a skin of ectoplasmic armor -- which bypasses proficiency altogether -- to pump up the AC itself, at least for now.)

And yes, mithral is already masterwork. So go go gadget chain shirt.

I figured it had been said before(I doubt I'm the first one) but I have never seen it mentioned on the boards before. Hmm, I don't think there is a general Character Optimization tips and tricks thread.

Indeed, they do not stack, I guess part of the three is the masterwork.

Also my point of linking the thread was that you could be wearing alot better than that. As far as core only....since when is that an issue :P

As has been said. Mithril is already Masterwork.

Plus, Medium armour reduces your speed, so its Mithril Chain Shirts all the way!

Mithril counters the speed reduction.

For 5,100gp, you could have a +1 Twilight enhanced Mithril Chainshirt. No ACP + no ASF=Rockin' good time.
