I found out mage armor doesn't stack with armor armor, even though the text doesn't expressly say so. Does the shield spell not stack with a regular shield?

What is the rule for things like that? Is it "applies a +X bonus to AC" doesn't stack with actual armor?

In general, the same type bonus doesn't stack.
ie, one shield bonus, one armor bonus, one deflection, one sacred, etc...

Dodge bonuses, however, do stack. Ie, dodge, mobility.

In general, the same spell does not stack with itself.
ie, fox's cunning, bear's endurance.

Mage Armor, Bracers of Armor, and Armor all give an 'Armor Bonus' to Armor Class.

The Shield Spell and Shields both give a 'Shield Bonus'

Bonuses of the same name don't stack (Except for the exceptions. I think Luck bonuses stack?)

So, you want to look for different named bonuses, and bonuses to 'Natural Armor'. You can find insight, luck, and enhancement bonuses that will all stack with each other.

Only Dodge bonuses and Circumstance bonuses stack with themselves. Read all about it right here:

Mage Armor doesn't stack an armor just as wearing two armors doesn't stack. Same with Shield and shields.

Check each spells description to see which type of bonus it provides. Shield of Faith for example provides a Deflection modifier, so it DOES stack with a normal shield.

For future reference: Although most people on this forum are, generally, very helpful, this (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20) would be a much more suitable place to ask such questions. ;)

DMG page 21 talks about each bonus type and how they interact.

I had get real familiar with this page a few months ago. The party decided to give our WarForged Paladin Bracers that gave an armor bonus of +2. since he was our main front line fighter they thought wanted to boost his AC as much as possible. My psion/Wizard and our sorcerer were passed over for this item. I was late to the session and it was done before I got there. The sorcerer was new to D&D. Once it was explained to the group(and the rulebook was pulled out) that the +2 armor bonus from being Warforged and the +2 armor bonus from the bracers didn't stack the party gave the sorcerer the bracers. She had the lowest AC in the party.
