Hey all,

I was wondering if it would be too powerful or broken to trade out having a familiar to be able to cast in light armor? (this is for a sor). I don't want to use the battle sor variant in UA because I don't feel like losing spells and don't care for the attack bonus boost.

Thanks

Well it won't break the game but armored mage feat would be a lot better than having a familiar in most cases, assuming you can't polymorph it. There are some tricks to be used with familiars but using them tends to paint a bullseye on the familiar for the DM.

First, this should be in houserules, not characer optimization.

Based on the other alternative class features I ahve seen in PHBII and Complete Mage, it is probably a little too good, and I would hit the sorceror with another hit, like maybe one fewer spell known of the maximum level they can currently use. Or more because I assume you intend to give them the proficiency also.

For most players, myself included, losing the familiar is no loss at all, so they should take a hit somewhere else.

I actually didn't plan on taking the weapon prof either, all I wanted was the ability to use light armor for a little more AC.

I think he meant the *armor* proficiency...

Yeah that would really be too broken. However if all you want is to cast in light armour you can do that without the proficiency for not that much money comparatively. Get a +1 mithral chain shirt with the twilight special ability and it has no spell failure chance and no check penalty.

The main problem from that variant is the armoured mage feat so you could get heavy armour for only 2 feats.

Wear a mithril buckler while you're at it.
