Arrowsplit for the win? Ideal for Chameleon Archers [Archive] - Wizards Community

Am I the only person who's noticed the Arrowsplit spell from Champions of Ruin? It strikes me as either an extremely deadly spell, especially if all bonuses to damage are considered.

Give it to a character with Sneak Attack and it essentially gives them extra sneak attacks (or skirmish attacks) that round.

The multiplication of damage could be astounding, especially if you consider casting the spell maximised or empowered (use a rod with quick-draw), and each arrow can crit which could lead to truly ludicrous damage.

So how do other people read the spell? They use the term 'masterwork arrow' a lot, which somewhat implies magical bonuses aren't copied, but then-again most magical/special material arrows are masterwork and it says that the arrow/bolt separates into identical copies.

Well you should know that the various Rods of Metamagic do not require activation, they merely need to be possessed by the character using them. This means, in your backpack, or whatever.

It seems like the spell was meant to work with high quality non-magical arrows. However, because it only states masterwork arrow or bolt, it is easy to say that their magical counterparts should work as well since they are masterwork first before the had an enchantment placed on them.

I don't have champions of ruin, but from what you've said I assume that it makes an arrow split into many. If this is the case, you would lose the precision required for sneak attacks on all but the first arrow.

You make a seperate attack roll for each arrow, so nope, no loss of precision damage.

The wording's tricky, yes... I'm guessing the intent was for it to work on nonmagical arrows/bolts, but it could be interpreted as working on magical ones as well. Of course, if your DM doesn't want to let you use it on magical ones, the Splitting weapon property is similar - if not quite as good - and disturbingly cheap (+3) considering it effectively doubles your attacks per round, without there being any question of what it works on.

How is it not as good? If a DM let you use the spell on magic arrows, he might only make the original one magic, and the others masterwork copies. The Splitting Enhancment says for sure that it duplicates all magical abilities on the arrows.

Wow, that's a very badly worded spell!
