I was looking at the Artificer as a posibility for an upcomming game, what with his versitility and realised something, as with all things, the artificer is a potentially better cleric archer then a cleric. Now artificers aren't my fortay so I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a build [I have access to almost all the books - except a few brand newies that aren't available over here in Aus yet, at least not at my FLGS] that would be able to utilise the insane versitility of the artificer.

Also, while on the topic of an artificer being better then anyone for anything I just had a thought

Human: Psion 1 / Artificer 2

Feats: Assume Supernatural ability, Snake Blooded, Item Familiar, Extroadinary Artisan, [FLAW - Any].

With his item familiar boosted XP he can craft a scroll of Polymorph Any Object [granted DC 35 isn't gonna be easy but its easy to get a check of +25 which means that a statistically normal roll of 10.5 is a success in crafting the scroll]. At this point the game ends and you win, 2 levels before Pun-Pun does, and a level before the Omnisifier knows about you.

[Note 1: I left the Psion bonus feat empty as I wasn't certain if they needed a feat for their psi-crystal, if they don't then you don't need a flaw].

[Note 2: I realised some people may disagree with my complying with the pre-reqs for assume supernatural ability, if you are one feel free to change the race to changling and add a secondary flaw [or keep the one in leu of note 1]].

Spell trigger/completion items have caster level prerequisites.

Its a scroll, with +25 to use magic device you can't fail to activate it really.

Besides, how does this beat Pun-Pun? Remember, he can do what your character can, but a gazillion times better.

Taeldrin, pun pun can't be beaten ... but he can be beaten to the punch.

Mystic, a caster level prerequisite to craft ...

The attraction of a cleric archer is zen archery ... which the artificer doesn't really benefit from. A warforged artificer works better as a thrower Id say, give him some life drinker axes to throw :)

I never noticed that part of the text [and lets be honest here the pun pun beating was just to get more peoples attention]. I was hoping to avoid it but I suppose he'll have to buy a scroll [which delays the whole deal to 4th character level - Damn!],

I was thinking of using artificer for the early access to the crazy self buffs [in addition to the ability to filch em from both wizard and cleric. I was actually hoping to avoid warforged if possible, as I simply don't like em. Shoulda made it clear in the OP that I was gonna be Human if possible. The idea of throwing hadn't ocurred to me yet, so thats another potential avenue. Yeah without Zen archery I'll probably hit some MAD.

I know I have an archificer build posted somewhere; I'll see if I can dig it up. Archery is an excellent choice for a combat Artificer, as his hit points are somewhat lackluster for a melee specialist.

The trick to the Archificer is to take all of the best Ranger archery spells and combine them with the spells that make the Cleric-Archer so useful.

So the Pun-Pun beating was a joke? I really hope so. But if you want a good artificer, replace the Psion level with a Cleric level, so you can wear heavy armor and apply buffing spells to yourself more often.

Actually I misread something that I had always considered stupidly overpowered. Now its simply regular overpowered ;).

The psion level was for a psicrystal and not part of my actual build which will be pure artificer if possible.
