I can't believe I just thought of this . . . please tell me someone has found some clever way to exploit the Artificer's ability to craft any contingency spell.

Okay.

Someone has found a way to abuse the Artificer's ability to craft any contingency spell. :)

Seriously--it's a very strong option for an Artificer, and so broad in scope that it's difficult to list all of the possibilities in one place.

Yep, latched onto that almost immediately upon seeing the feat. It was most useful.

Warlocks can do this, too.

Now here's a thought. How do you use Metamagic Item on a Contingent Spell?

how is this abuse broken? it cost more then a scroll of the same type and aside from being able to use many different types of spells for the contigency I dont really see a benifit. your even limited on how many you can have on your persona at any one time.

Yeah, but having insta-revivify together with a contingent heal is like casting life3 in final fantasy. You drop dead, get revived and (nearly) fully healed. Duracel for teh win!

The main use of Craft Contingent Spell is for nasty surprises to go off automatically under curtain circumstances. Like having Contingent Greater Bestow Curse for when someone tries to grapple you so that reduce their strength score to 1. Have having a Contingent for when you cast a spell on someone to set up a combo with the spells like having a Contingent Transmute Stone to Mud whenever turn someone into stone with Flesh to Stone so you don’t have to take another round to do it. Also the old fashion uses like having Contingent Heal for when you’re under half your HP or having one to cast Resurrection or True Resurrection you dead. And lets not forget that you can put Contingents on your party members and constructs. There is nothing quite like having a Iron Golem with Contingent Body Outside Body on it that set for when you give a command word.

To get the best out of it you have to think tactically and figure out ways that curtain spells could give you an advantage if they went off under different circumstances.

Contingent revivify has to be the best one by far.
Die, and come back to life with NO PENALTIES! So much better than Resurrection, or raise dead.
Team it up with a few contingent CLW spells, or a single contingent heal.

Other good ones I've thought of:
contingent resist/absorb elements
contingent tensers transformation
contingent spells you can trigger while under tensers
contingent teleport
contingent remove curse/restoration/etc...

the possibilities are limitless, especially with combinations.

That a Warlock can also eventually pull this off, at just about the same level he actually qualifies for it too, is a good point. It's a great 12th level feat pick for the Warlock.

Now about it being less effecient than a scroll . . . Well Artificers get scribe scroll for free, and there is spell phylactory which you could read from a scroll . . . a scroll to contingency a scroll? It would save you a feat but it's less versatile and versatility is king. Straightforward efficiency and power aren't everything. For instance, It really doesn't matter how high your strength score and Base Attack Bonus are if someone casts reverse gravity on you.

Obviously, since an artificer starts with scribe scroll, and it's cheaper to scribe a scroll (as it should be), then any artificer should keep "just in case" utility spells like Knock, Scrying, Permanacy, or Phantom Steed, in scrolls. These are spells you'll very rarely need immediately or require unique situations that you'll rarely enter by accident. It's the same tactic that most reliable wizards use, except a wizard does have the option of just leaving a spell-slot empty and taking 10 minutes to cast. But this leaves alot of spells and situations that are better to have immediate access to. Any by immediate I mean by the literal D&D definition, so that it happens outside of your turn.

So the key to getting your feat's worth with Craft Contingency taking advantage of its versatility. The most obvious tactic is hanging a spell to either react to an action you're planning, or an action you predict your enemy will make.

Hmmm . . . Since spell-activation items always require a standard action to use, does this mean that an artificer can't use quiken spell metamagic? For simple "blasting" of the same spell off there's twin spell but if you need to cast two different spells in quick succession, that's a useful application for contingent spells. Best though is the option to just apply revivify and heal contingents to the whole party to take some weight off your cleric's shoulders.
