Artificer + Maug Fighter [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm going to be playing an Artificer in a game that starts next week. We'll all be 7th level. At 1st level, we're all gestalt //fighter. After that, we level up in a single class only. This is for thematic reasons. Another player is going to play as a Maug (Fiend Folio) fighter. Maugs are constructs, but not golems (they don't have construct immunities, but they do get a LOT of immunities). My giggling and snickering goblin artificer will be riding atop his back. Full time if I can make the Concentration checks while the Thull (the Maug) is fighting.

We're 32 point buy, 19k gold, 6.5k/item max.

My questions:
1) What type of artificer should I be? The bufficer and blastificer seem like the best options. I'd like advice from players who have played an artificer with a warforged/construct in the party. What buffs did you find valuable?

2) What should I build for a riding basket/saddle? If I go the basket route, can I -- at 7th level -- make the interior an extra dimmensional space? Large enough for a lab to do my work? :D If not, how would you enchant it? There aren't a lot of magic saddle-type items in the books. Plus, I don't need to make Ride checks. I'm won't steer Thull with my knees. Much easier to just talk to him about a plan of action. Is there a way to make the basket give a bonus to Concentration for the occupant? Can I specify the type of bonus (compentence vs enhancement vs whatever)?

2) Look at this (http://www.montecook.com/images/Pactlord_enforcers.pdf) [WARNING: Opens into PDF], and talk to your DM about doing something similar. In terms of extradimensional space...just attach the appropriate stuff to the harness.

Thanks for the link. Interesting to see MC has already thought of what we're doing.

What do you mean by "appropriate stuff"? +enhancements to AC are a no brainer, but what about having a lab inside the basket?

A portable hole or bag of holding (type 3 or 4) should help. If you need more space than they provide, you can always use one as your actual workshop and the rest as storage facilities.

there is one thing that any artificer, whether buffi-, or blasti-, or archi-, is the staff of oaken battle. its essentially 13,500 for a double weapon that strikes at d10+12, which since you're an artificer will cost you 6,750.

Oh, I just looked that Maug up, HILARIOUS!!!. GO for it lol. Tho I would choose flaws to get a few extra feats that bests suits your character. LOL. Right now your making me think, stop it! :P.

androcles: Yes, I've been eyeing that, but I start at 7th. No staff creation yet.

Balkazar: Where can I find flaws? What ones would you recommend?

Maug have construct immunities.

They just dont have spell immunity (instead they get spell resistance)

Necromas: Ahh. I always equated the two as one and the same.

Flaws is in Unearthed Arcana Pg. 40 I think, Tho not 100% sure.

Depending on what you want I would go the one that gives -2 melee bonus and vulnerable it gives like -1 to AC :P

You know, if you took Mounted Combat as your Fighter feat, and maxed out Ride (plus skill boosting items/infusions as well), then you could make Thull near impossible to hit. Only once per round, but that can make a big difference. Plus then you can get cover as well.

IceFractal, unfortunately, Thull is his own man... construct. I can't control him with Ride checks. Even if I wanted to, my DM wouldn't allow it.
