Im going to make a artificer in my next campaign, but i have no clue as to how to builed him! He will probably start out at 5th-7th levle. I want to know where to put my skill points, what to do with my abilitys (my DM plays so that each abilty has a average of 14 and you can move stuff around) And if there are any feats I could take instead of the metamagic ones. Im going to be a human with hopfuly a crossbow of some repeating sort.

Caelic has an excellent Artificier thread floating around somewhere, so I'm sure someone will post a link to it. Otherwise, you could drop him a private message.

Stats should go in roughly this order: Charisma, Intelligence, Constituion, Dexterity, Wisdom, Strength.

For skills: Use Magic Device should be maxed out at every single level. Also put points into Spellcraft, Knowledge (arcana), the various Craft skills, Search and Disable device, if you are going to be the group's trapfinder, Diplomacy, since you have a high Cha, and anything else you'd like.

Good feats: Skill Focus (UMD), Magical Aptitude, Energy Substitution, Extend and Persistent Spell.

I'm sure there's more, but others should be along to contribute soon.

I'd go even further and say that Int is *more* important than Cha for the first six or seven levels. Before you get Metamagic Spell Trigger, anyhow. But with your system at the beginning I'd make your stats something like (assuming I get your stat system):

Str 10
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 18
Wis 10
Cha 18

Your first two feats should probably be Skill Focus UMD and Magical Aptitude. In fact, take your feats and skills in the order that Vapor IX gave them, except take something that can double your spell effects like Twin Spell in place of Energy Sub; that one you can put off until later, when things start picking up resistances to fire.

Also be sure to take a good look at the Artificer's Infusion list. Wonderful list, if i may say.

Two infusions that deserve to be remembered are Metamagic Item and Spell storing item. These will probably be the most used infusions of your artificer.

If you are new to spellcasting classes, I would suggest being a Cleric or Sorcerer. The artificier is a somewhat vague spellcasting class, because of it's focus on item creation and its flexibility. While it is a great class, and a very powerful one, you might want to get used to spellcasting with another class. Like Cleric. When you're done flinging spells around, pick up a hammer and crack some skulls. :D

Oh, but those are the best parts of the artificer! Spell storing is probably the best 1st level infusion on the artificer's list, and around level 6-7 the artificer becomes the reigning king of metamagic. An artificer that doesn't use metamagic is like a druid who doesn't use wildshape, or a rogue who doesn't use sneak attack; sure you can do other things, but you might as well be a different class.
