Can you use Item Alteration to change the bonus type given by stat boosting tomes (a hideously expensive way to get permanent, non-dispellable stat bonus of an unusual type)? If so, is there a way to actually afford the technique other than as a way to use low-bonus tomes found in treasure that would otherwise be obsolete?

Seeing as the spell says that it has a duration of 10min/lvl I would say no.

Depends on how much of a pushover your DM is. To borrow a line from Teenage Caveman: "There is no word of Law against it!"
There's technically nothing in the rules that says you can't.

Then again, there's also nothing in the rules that says you can't use loaded dice, so there you go.

That is a very interesting idea I have not seen before. Worse case senario, if you have a +3 inherent bonus to dex and a +5 inherent bonus to dex, you dont loss the lower one, it is just overcome by the greater bonus. For the life of your character you will have both of the bonuses. Even if the DM rules, and he should, that you cannot cast that infusion on a tome right before you finish your 8 days of reading (or whatever the book requires) you could as a warforged still benefit. A warforged counts as an item for purposes of infusions, unlike people. You could always read both books and cast the infusion on yourself. Now the infusion will only have the normal duration, but I think during the infusions duration, it should work. You could have a +5 inherent bonus to dex and a +3 X bonus to dex. Of course this is limiting since you must be a warforge to be a creature that is a legal target of an infusion. On the up side, by the time you have the ability to have multiple inherent stat bonuses, your infusion should have a long duration. Say you cast at level 18 with it extended, that is 6 hours. You should be able to cast that 3 times a day.

But I think under no circumstances should a DM allow one casting of the infusion before the book is read and make the change permanment.
