As a DM i am reguarly asked by two of my players if they can take racial paragon levels from Unearthed Arcana. Do you think these classes are balanced? They seem a little too good to me, but then again when 3.5 first came out I said the same thing about Mystic Theurge and look how wrong I was.

They aren't unbalancing, I don't think.

Some of them, particularly Human, are quite useful in certain builds. On the other hand, when compared with caster prestige classes that cost NOTHING, they're pretty tame.

They're fine in my opinion.

QFT.

They're useful in certain builds, but you won't generally see a lot of use of them (I should think).

The bad thing about them, IMO, is that they're not balanced between each other. Human Paragon owns every other racial paragon available, by far. For that reason, I tend not to allow it.

Btw, it seems to be the main problem with UA. Cobra Strike Monk owns every other fighting style; Wolf Totem Barbarian is the only decent variant barbarian, and so on.

The Dwarven Paragon is also quite nice as prefix for a deepwarden build. Also quite flavorful. Of the others only the halfling one might have some potential for throwing-weapon builds.

Drow paragon is great (for Wizards, for exactly one level).

Half-dragon paragon is pretty sweet (if you've already convinced yourself that half-dragon is worth the cost).

The others could use a bit of a power-up.

Woohoo, another chance to peddle my Half-Elf Sorc 1/Half-Elf Paragon 3/Human Paragon 3/Dragon Disciple 10/Half-Dragon Paragon 3 build! ;)

Seriously, the Paragons are fine. Not uber, not awful - fine. They can create otherwise difficult combinations (like a Raging Paladin), but don't throw balance out of whack.

It’s possible for a powerful magic effect such as shapechange, reincarnate, or wish to change a character’s race. If a character has already taken racial paragon levels in his original race, he can never become a paragon of another race. However, such shapechanging and form-altering magics also cause no loss of a paragon’s class abilities—the class abilities gained from racial paragon levels are affected no more or less drastically than benefits gained from having levels in any other class.

Exceptions to the rule are the half elf paragon and the half-orc paragon.

I think the Gnome paragon has some power, w/ +5 CL to Bard Illusion spellcasting in 3 levels.

stuff

Thank you for quoting the RAW on the subject. I'm sorry that my prefix 'woohoo' and rejoinder 'seriously' were not clear enough indicators of a mostly fanciful creation. I'll work on being clearer next time.

It would help :P

Honestly, racial paragon levels are often WORSE than levels of another class. Their usefulness comes in qualifying for other hings, but they're usually not anything resembling over-powered.

They can be useful for getting a good clump of skill points later in a build if your first character level was a paragon racial level.
