| scrollreader01-12-05, 04:06 PM | I'm building a character who will have ten levels of assassin spellcasting. The build is a bit more complicated, but that's the basic information. But ... there are 61 assassin spells, using 3.5 sources only (As per our DMs Ruling). I can only know 16. I need a bit of help, from you more experienced min/maxers. At the moment, I'm leaning towards swift spells, and spells that affect me. The value of (SR Yes, Save: Anything) seems questionable for a half-caster. Are there any spells that I absolutely shouldn't miss? Ones I should never take (Besides Sleep and Heart Ripper) Thanks in Advance. |
| UMiskatonic01-12-05, 04:56 PM | Well, lets think about the kind of assassin you want. You are a half-caster, which means you'll want to stick with spells that affect yourself, mostly. Avoid lots of SR/save for half spells, they will fail often. Swift invisibility is no good. Take regular invisibility. It's almost as good in combat, far better for sneaking around, and can be cast on others. Assuming you have some rogue, then your primary method of doing damage is through sneak attack. Spells that help that work, like invisibility, non-detection are important for you to have. Detection spells are also important here, like see invisibility, low-light vision, and darkvision. I'd only take see invisibility out of that lot, and throw two levels into dark hunter, shadowdancer, or be some race with darkvision if it matters a lot. Spells that directly do damage are not super great. Against a creature of your level, these spells do almost no damage. That might change if you sneak attack with the spell, so make sure that you get a ranged attack, preferably a ranged touch attack, or forget it. Spells that give you alternate methods of taking a creature down, like save or die spells, or ability damage spells, or hindering spells are important back-up strategies to have. Try to get a few of those, on scrolls or wands at least. The only other must-have would be movement. You need to get to your target. There are a lot of ways to do this with equipment, but failing that, you need to do it yourself. What's your DM allow for shopping? I'd try to work with skill points and spell selection at the same time. For example, if you have high skill ranks in Open Lock, don't take the Knock spell. You should be able to cover all the bases that way. That's the best I've got without a better idea of your specifics. |
| Seventh Seraph01-13-05, 05:40 PM | I hope this isn't a stupid question, but how did you get 61 for the total number of assassin spells? I counted 31.... |

| Erus01-21-05, 03:33 PM | Freedom of Move, Shadow Form are must haves for my Assassin/10s just come in handy seems like all the time BTW, nice List of spells... thanks |
| Skia Mriswith01-21-05, 06:03 PM | There are no 'best' spells. Just pick the spells that go with your character and your style. Sure swift invisibility is nice, but an true assassin doesn't need this. But a true assassin shouldn't be with a party anyways. So, define your style, and pick spells that go with that. |
| scrollreader01-22-05, 11:30 AM | Ths is for an NPC. Primary goals are well, assassinating people the PCs are supposed to be guarding, and, maybe, assassinating the PCs if they cause too much trouble. |
| Kelyme01-25-05, 03:21 PM | Look you may think that assassins aren't the best people to have in a party but I am playing one now and he is turning out just fine. Sure I am one of only two evil pc's but it works out just fine, everyone else might not trust me at all but when you can do about 80 damage to a balor your party starts not to care whether you are evil or not. I have 8 attacks right now with my two keen short swords of speed, one of them is a luck blade. All that sneak attack kills and that isn't even considering the people I can take down when I have time for assassination. Thanks for the spell list though, this is very helpful. With my enchantments all together my level assassin7/fighter2/rogue2/swashbuckler3 I get over +60 to hide and move silently. Oh and if things go right I am about to become a vampire if I am lucky. |
