| Phrizz1103-07-06, 01:05 AM | hi everyone, first time poster here. I was wondering whether the wizard specialists could help me out. I'm playing in my first campaign in many years and my only previous experience was with 2e. I'm playing in a 3.5e, mostly hack-and-slash campaign with basically no house rules. So all the 3.5e books are potentially available. I'd prefer to avoid the BoVD and BoED if at all possible, since I don't really like their style much. My Wizard as he stands now is a straight human True Neutral Wiz/Evoker 12 (ench, necro forbidden), for whom I took the following feats: Scribe Scroll [free for wizard] Spell Focus (Evo, Conj) Augment Summoning [I regret taking this] Improved Initiative Skill Focus: Spellcraft Empower Spell Quicken Spell -- haven't selected my 12th lvl feat yet, was thinking Imp Counterspell -- In terms of bonuses from equipment, he's got Con+6, Int+4, Dex+4, Resistance+3, and rings of Counterspells and Sustenance. base stats are Str:8 Dex:14 Con:14 Int:21 Wis:8 Cha:10 My vision for him was to take archmage levels and then become a counterspell ace by getting caster level boosts from: archmage, ring of arcane mastery (CA), Orange Ioun Stone, and then taking the arcane mastery feat from CA to take 10 on caster level checks, and finally obtaining a ring of use-activated duelward (4/day) [produced in analogy to boots of speed, cost 9*5*2000*4/5=72,000 gp] to counterspell 4/day as an immediate action with Greater Dispel Magic, taking 10 on the caster level check so I automatically counter (and spell-turn if possible, once I have the archmage levels) any spell with from a caster who is no more than 3 caster levels higher than me. But right now I'm having a really tough time with the enemies the DM is throwing at us. He heavily favors making parties of enemy NPCs, who *always* seem to have buffs up (including resist energy to fire and lightning, as well as freedom of movement). The fighter, cleric and druid in the party are doing great for themselves, but I'm having trouble finding my niche: other than buffing stoneskin and haste, I'm not really that effective in combat at the moment compared to the other classes. And against intelligent enemies I almost always seem to find myself being the primary target of the entire enemy party, who seem (perhaps understandably) to want to stick it to me. I was avoiding taking the energy substitution feat since I was going to pick up mastery of elements as an archmage, and the DM said that I could use a Wish at some point to swap out the Augment Summoning feat if I really wanted to. We just found a bunch of treasure so I'll have some cash to spend -- I'd really appreciate any suggestions you guys might have for continuing to build my character, or some spell or item combos that might be good in combat - I'm not so experienced with 3.5e gameplay so any pointers would be cool. Thanks! |
