| Jaxian Redleaf07-04-03, 06:29 PM | If it is not to much to ask, i need some suggestions on assassins build. I was thinking something like a la entreri...:D |
| Gadodel07-04-03, 06:41 PM | Hmmm....I think someone will come along and say "That's not how we do things here". Build the character, rough draft-then present it. Folks will be happy to help optimize...not necessarily build the character from scratch. One of the best builds I have used was a Human NPC... Cleric3/Fighter7/Rogue3/Wizard7.... |
| Jaxian Redleaf07-04-03, 06:57 PM | I mean with the assassin PrC and i only want the levels you don't have to build from scratch |
| Accidental07-05-03, 02:08 AM | Thats really easy to do yourself. I don't really think the assassin PrC is very good at its job, try looking at the Telfammar Shadowlord. It's like an assassin, but better. Then, combine it with Bladesinger or NotCM and you've got a great character. Try like Rog3/Ftr2/Rgr1/Mnk1/Asn1/Bladesinger6/Telfammar5/Duel1 Your primary stats are Int and Dex (obviously). This is a stat heavy build (duh); if you like a more simple assassin, try a shifter (Rog5/Asn5/Shifter10 or Druid10/Shifter10) or an arcane trickster (Rog3/Transmuter5/Loremaster1/Arcane trickster9/Archmage2) Pick one of those and give it a try, I'm sure we can help you flesh one out but you have to decide what you want. "Assassin" is way too vague. |
| Matt Neuman07-05-03, 02:58 AM | For a super sneaky assassin: Rogue 10/Shadowdancer 1/Assassin 9 For a melee combat /spell using assassin: Elf Ranger 3/Fighter 2/Assassin 5/Bladesinger 10 For an Entreri Style assassin: Human Fighter 8/Rogue 11/Assassin 1 Levels 1-5 Rogue, 6 Assassin, 7-10 Fighter, 11-16 Rogue, 17+ Fighter For my favorite Assassin build of the moment: Rogue 3/Wizard 5/Assassin 3/Oozemaster 9 +13 BAB 9 Levels of Wizardly Casting Malleability (awesome for assassins) 5 different Oozemaster touch attacks Slime Wave 1/day |

I get 7th level wizard spells and 2nd level assassin spells. House rule +1 to existing level in assassin? and I get bab+12, not 13. ________________________________________ __________ My Assassin build would be: Rogue5/Assassin5/Sorcerer or Wizard1/Arcane Trickster9 |

| not-a-ninja07-05-03, 02:50 PM | hmm, i'm not really into the whole ninja assassin thing, but if i were to make one, i'd probably go with something simple like... 3.0 halfling rgr1/ftr2/rog7/assassin10 or rgr1/ftr1/rog3/guild thief5/assassin10 or rog5/guild thief5/assassin10 3.5 halfling rgr2/rog3/guild thief5/assassin10 or ftr2/rog3/guild thief5/assassin10 or rog5/guild thief5/assassin10 the point of any of these builds is that you grab leadership and start your own assassin's guild. make sure you have enough ranks in disguise to make cover identities... oh, and here is my absolute favorite ninja build... human rog5/guild thief5/ninja spy10 word. |
| Darnek Wyrnin07-05-03, 03:40 PM | Originally posted by Prism 9th level caster not 9th level spells Oh, My mistake  Sorry about that. |
| Darnek Wyrnin07-05-03, 03:47 PM | Oh, and I found amusthave item for teh Sneak attackers out there. It's called Blindfold of true darkness and it's in the Arms and Equipment guide. Look it up;) |
| Hanniball07-05-03, 05:36 PM | if your DM allows ECL modifying templates try the shade. it's in the back of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting book or in the races of faerun. its awesome for assassins/rogues because they can make it dark at will yet they can see in the dark! it's broken at a +2 ecl...i think it says +4 ecl in RoF... either way...just my 0.02 cp |
| opticassault07-05-03, 06:04 PM | Here's a build I just stumbled on today that is very, very simple and effective: Gray Elf Rog 5/Asn9/Shadow Lord 6 Very simple little build, but at 20th level you can have a Death Attack that has a DC of 40. Here's how: Start with 20 Int (+2 racial) and put all your points into it. Buy a +6 headband of intellect, a +5 tome of intellect, and make whatever weapon you want to use have the assassin's (+2 Death attack DC's) property (I believe it's in MoF or Lords of Darkness, can't remember which one). You end up with: DC 10 + 9 (Assassin) + 6 (Shadow Lord) + 13 (Intelligence bonus) + 2 (Weapon Bonus) for a grand total of 40. This build is also 3.5 compatible unless they change the req's for assassin in 3.5. You can improved invisibility to study your opponent, then move in for the kill with a dimension door. Or, if you would rather attack from afar, cast a Sniper's Eye (Song and Silence) to get a 60 foot ranged death attack. |
| Darnek Wyrnin07-05-03, 07:00 PM | Now that's a nice build opticassault!!!! First build I really, really want to play from this board  |
| opticassault07-05-03, 07:17 PM | I thank you, goodsir. I tinkered around with a gray elf assassin using reach weapons in the past, and he was pretty effective (I ran him in ToEE). When I saw Shadowlord I was just like... amazed at the class. It was the PrC needed to really push the build over the top. |

Here's how: This build would probably benefit very much from 3.0 duelists canny defense ability as it has such a high INT. It also is probably better to take Shadowlord PrC as soon as possible (level 7) Thus being: Rogue5/Asn2/Shadowlord6/Asn7. The reason for this is that in this way one gets the Shadowlords death attack as soon as possible (shadowlords do not get it before level 6). Otherways this character gets a massive boost of efficiency when it reaches level 20 (at level 19 its death attack DC would be 6 lower than at level 20). Otherways its a very effective build. I am considering building a char like this if the GM will allow. It will be Rogue1/fighter2/rogue2/Asn2/Teflammar6... and then I'll continue with the assassin levels (level 13 campaign). I'll also boost the int quite some, but I'll probably put some boosts to CON also. BTW. what happens to this character when it adopts the Shadowwalker template? That template is +1 ECL so do I need to level up once just to adopt it (so the character would actually be level 12 when I start playing). Also. What feats and magic items you would suggest a char like this should buy (standard level 13 money)? Sincerely, Sisyfos |

I loved playing the Shade though... I made a "death" character- scythe and everything... he was amazingly good, even without the Spell resistance. Gave him a wand of Darkness and let him blender everything! |
| opticassault07-06-03, 12:08 PM | I wasn't really posting level orders in that build, but you can't multiclass into shadow lord until you can cast dimension door as an Assassin, so it requires a fairly high level in it. As far as the build you posted goes, i'd play that when you leveled you could take the template instead of a character level. Hmm.. at 13th level.. depends on what you want to focus on. Since you will already be a shadow lord if you have the shadow walker template, I'd assume you'd want to go the death attack route. Pick up a +6 headband of intellect and put the assassin ability on any weapon you are using to up your DC's. You will have a 20 + Int Mod as a death attack DC, so with a pretty good Intelligence you can probably be sucessful most of the time. Other than that, I'd grab boots of elvenkind and a cloak of elvenkind, then spend whatever you have as you want. |
| Shrou07-06-03, 12:41 PM | This isn't the best build but it's okay Fighter 4/Rogue 3/Assassin 10/Guild Thief 3 Another build would be... Fighter 4/Ranger 2/Blackguard 5/Assassin 9 |

Shadowwalker template gives the ability to "cast" dimension door at level 3 so that will not be a problem. I guess its more a question of whether I will want that template at all. It is possible to take shadowlord prc without being a shadowwalker, but learning that dimension door from assassin prc. I wonder if it is possible to somehow do minor modifications to this build and get +16 BAB in the end without losing much DC from death attack etc. Anyhow, thanks for the build Opticassault. | Jaxian Redleaf07-06-03, 03:45 PM | What do you think about this? Human with shadow walker template fighter 4/Rogue 3/ Assassin 7/ Shadow lord Will go for 2 weapon fighting with daggers 3 must have things: cloak of arachnida, assassins dagger and dagger of wounding |
| The One and Only...07-06-03, 05:52 PM | PsyWar 20, Psion 20, Wizard 20, Sorceror 20. No joke. PsyWar: Polymorph into the form of someone that would be given access to the target, then hack him into pieces. Obviously, you'll want to get him alone. This guy makes a better spy than assassin, but then he's primarily a warrior anyway - this is just a possible side-schtick. Psion, Wizard, Sorceror: There are so many ways to assassinate with these guys, I don't think I'm even going to begin. As for the Assassin PrC: You really shouldn't bother. It's a sub-optimal class, and you would be better served by one that allows for more diversity. |
| opticassault07-06-03, 06:19 PM | I have to disagree there. The assassin has a pretty nice spell list, a great skill set, and built correctly, the death attack ability can be pretty brutal. It's even more evil once combined with Shadowlord: You can study your opponent from afar, then dimension door or shadow walk right next to them and full attack them, so that even if your death attack fails you can still unleash a full attack with sneak attack damage. The sniper's eye spell even allows assassins to kill their target with a ranged attack. While there are certain creatures types (notably, anything immune to sneak attacks) it is weak against, it is very powerful against vulnerable opponents. Something fun me and my friends came up with: rogue 5 / exotic weapon master 5 / assassin 10 Unwitting target arrives home and opens his door. Target: "Hey, what are you doing here?" Assassin: Stares at opponent. Target: "Who the hell are you?" Assassin: Stares at opponent. Target: "Why are you holding my cat?" Assassin: (leaps upon his opponent, brutally killing him with his own furry housepet) |
| RabidWeasel07-06-03, 07:13 PM | Except the build is illegal because EWM requires rage as a requisite (pretty stupid IMO as the class has nothing to do with raging). |
| KotJC_Enigma4207-06-03, 09:35 PM | An assassin build I'm currently using is Rogue 5/Assassin 2/Shadowlord 6/Duelist 2/Assassin 3-7, with the Shadow Walker template. Currently only at lvl 3 (ecl 4) but I think it'll be fun. With a final (at lvl 20, ecl 21) sneak attack of +7d6 and a precise strike of +1d6 (use anytime), the ability to shadow pounce, and a death attack DC of 23 + int mod + others I think it'll be fun. and being a strongheart halfling, at lvl 3 he already has a +19 bonus to hide... (+5 dex, +4 size, +4 shade walker, +6 ranks) I like the build, its fun for me. |
