I'm trying to make an assassin character with stealth and be effective with the death attack option. I would hope that I could hold my own in battle, but it isn't a total necessity. I'm pretty loose on the weapons (prefer swords, but not tied to them).

Lvl 6
stats: 18/17/17/16/15/15

I'm not totally sure which books will be allowed, but lets just say that the Core books (possibly Psionics, too), the "Complete" books, the spell compendium, and possibly the eberron books. I like the changelings from Eberron personally, but I'm not locked in there.

I started with Rogue 3/ Fighter 2/ Assassin 1, but this seems too basic and just isn't working out too well...

Please Give me any help you can, I'd really like to make this character work! Thanks!

I've got a changling assassin thread a couple pages back. It is tough going deciding things. If you want an uber death attack build (which many advised me is a bad idea because you are a one trick pony) Rogue5/Assassin 10/Fatespinner5. With a changling starting with an 18 int +5 level +5 tome+6 item 34 int= +12 mod+1 from assassin dagger +2 from ability focus = DC 35 fort save +seal fate for a -10 to the save for an effective save vs death of 45. You also have the ability to make them reroll if they succeed. Base attack will be only 13 but you have wraithstrike so that doesn't matter. Look back to my thread to get some ideas and perhaps help me out.

Though my guy doesnt rely on Death Attack, he is a powerful assassin.

Rogue 3/ Fighter 2/ Assassin 10/ Invisible Blade 5 is a pretty easy approach that gives you great spells, death attack, melee capability and damage output.

Cheers.

My two favorite Assassin builds are 3 Swashbuckler/3 Rogue/8 Assassin/6 Telflammar Shadowlord and 3 Swashbuckler/3 Monk/6 Monk of the Long Death/8 Assassin. There are more details on those builds here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=4078961) and here. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8376919&postcount=27) For the second build, I recommend getting either Raptor or Sun School or both if you like the options.

max out intelligence, and take the ability focus(death attack)(Monster M) then you should get somthing that increases your int modifier. well, as soon as you get the cash ofcourse

There's the ever popular assassin's dagger. There's a +2 right there.

Personally, I don't think the death attack is super, the sneak attack damage is more important.

Take a look at things like staggering strike, which can really hobble your opponents, and poison. I mean, you're an assassin. Why not poison everything? Where's the downside?

casue poison arent effective past level... 4 and you cant afford enough good poisons until level... 12

poisons are flavor that would be an awesome thing to min/max if it was actually possible

Well I said that I liked the idea of death attack, but still wanted all the other goods associated with being an assassin. I like the idea of poisoning people and doing sneak attacks! I don't want to be a "one trick pony!"

I really appreciate what everyone has posted so far! It's difficult for me to keep track of all the PrC's and everything that goes into the character, so it is greatly appreciated!

Be sure to add to this thread if you find any other interesting combos for an assassin! It will be greatly appreciated!

I think it'd be best to focus on sneak attacks and the death attack. Poisons are a waste of time and kill too slowly to be effective in any real combat so you'll need to rely on flat footed sneak attacks... not sure if there is a class with the ability to cast a shadow to flank someone.... anyone heard of that one?

Technically, Shadow Dancer can do that with its shadow minions, but it doesn't get sneak-attack.

Poisons are only good if you craft them yourself. And craft(poison) is required for monk of the long death. The reason we say not to focus exclusively on deathattack is because you're going to have to adventure as well as complete contracts. There are lots of situations where death attack is useless, and in those situations you want to be able to fight or at least assist a party. Sneak Attack is a good class feature to fall back on, but often it's rendered useless too. That's why we feel an effective Assassin needs to have some general things going for him like BAB and AC.

I believe you are going good with your build. Rogue 3/ Fighter 2 / Assasin 9 / Shadowlord 6 is a very solid Death Attack build imo.
Has great DA DC and great mobility and stealth options.
Get as much intelligence as possible. Intelligence should be your primary stat.

1 level Psion(Shaper) splash gives you Psionic Minor Creation, letting you create 1-hour duration vegetable poisons, including BLack Lotus Extract, AND it comes with a free feat.

If you want a pure "one hit, one kill" build i suggest you'd go with:

Rogue 2/Cleric 3/Black flame zealot 5/Strifeleader 10

Garners a measly +13 attack bonus i think.. It's crap i know.
But with 18 int, 5 lvls and +5 from a tome and a +6 item, and the feat ability focus... and an assassins dagger your DC would lie about..

10 base+ 12 from int + 15 from levels + 2 from ability focus + 4 from Strifleaders greater deathattack + 1 from the assassins dagger.

That's a DC of 44. That's just evil. Most non-fighters (or more specifically, those without a good fort save) will just roll over and die.
And you can cast spells like a lvl 12 cleric... Not alot but it has it's benefits.

first of all... i love psionics...

second... this just made my day...

i have never thought of that before... poisons seem viable now...

thanks!
