| Claggart04-16-06, 09:20 AM | I have been searching for details on this feat everywhere. Is Savage Species out of print of just not very popular? I have looked at two local gaming stores and several large book retailers, but I can't find the book. Can someone give me the rundown on what it does and what the requirements are? Thanks. |
| _Elwe_04-16-06, 04:14 PM | look in the psionic book |
| psly4mne04-16-06, 04:25 PM | look in the psionic bookNo. Metamorphic Transfer is in XPH. Assume Supernatural Ability is in Savage Species. Claggart, I don't know whether SS is out of print, but it is not very popular around here, being 3.0 material. ASA only requires Wis 13 and the ability to assume a new form magically. It allows to to use a single supernatural ability of the form you assume, but it imposes a -2 penalty on all actions and you must make a will save to use the ability. If you have Wis 17, you can eliminate the -2 penalty with Improved ASA. |
| Claggart04-16-06, 08:42 PM | Thanks for the info. I'm playing a Battlesorcerer based on the Dragon Breath Sorcerer build that was floating around a while back (Battlesorcer/Dragonheart Mage/Master Transmogrifist). I am about to get a new feat (hopefully tomorrow night!) and I have never known specifically what that feat does. The way the old build was written, I'm guessing that you choose one ability which you get as long as the form you assume has that ability. Basically, the build only took the feat once, but assumed several "favored" dragon forms. |
| Kurama Youko04-16-06, 10:09 PM | Some corrections need to be made. first Savage Species was designed with the Update to 3.5 in mind, all the material outside of the statisitical abilities of monster abilities in the monster progression section is 3.5 or can be used with the 3.5 rules.. it even says this in the book. It's 3.5 like it or not. It's one of the main reasions why they didint make a 3.5 update for it. second, Assume Supernatural Ability allows you to pick one ability! from one form that you can assume and use that ability whenever you change into that form.. In other words if you took this feat when you could change into the best creature with a Supernatural Ability tou wanted using say Polymorph. (a 14 hit dice creature with a supernatural ability you like.) then that feat is forever affixed to that form and ability. So only when you change into that form and wanna use that ability will this feat come into use. You can't use this feat to just flip through your Monster Manual and start selecting supernatural abilities you wanna use willy nilly. It doesnt work that way. Read the feat very carefully and i think you'll see what im getting at. When you look at it this way, you realize its not that great a feat and that using psionics to pull this off is a better deal. update, I just looked at it again myself.. and now im not even sure. Wait nope, i was right the first time. Read the Special Clause in the feat. You can take it multipule times but only apply it once to a special ability each additional time you must chose a different ability. This means that when you chose this feat you have to select a form, then chose one of that forms special abilities.. example. You are a 13th lv wizard 1st lv Cleric w/Practice Spellcaster, at 12th lv you took this feat Assume Supernatural Ability (Tartarian Dragon - Breath Weapon) You can now use the Breath weapon of said dragon whenever you change into a Tartarian Dragon, regardless of the age catagory, since the feat doesnt specify anything like that. I would however assume that the breath weapon is the same strength as the one of the appropriate age catagory of dragon. If you took this feat again, you could either apply it to another Supernatural Ability that the Tartarian Dragon gets, or chose another Supernatural ability all together. Hmm.. this sounds like a interesting idea for a build to focus around.. hmm. gee alterself even qualifies for this feat. |
| Caelic04-16-06, 10:12 PM | Unfortunately, it's another of those feats where the wording is hideously vague and unclear. I agree that the intent is probably one ability from one form, but I can see why people would interpret it differently. |
| Kurama Youko04-16-06, 10:19 PM | actually Caelic look at the special clause at the end of the feat on the next page.. it finalize everything. If the feat byself allowed you to continue to change abilities then you wouldnt need to take it more than once, you'd just say you wanna use X supernatural ability now. |
| Caelic04-16-06, 11:15 PM | That's not where the ambiguity is, Kurama--I agree with you that you can't switch abilities. The ambiguity is in how specific those abilities have to be. Do I have to choose "Rend," or "Troll Rend?" Do I have to choose "Breath Weapon," or "Black Dragon Breath Weapon"...or, heck, "Adult Black Dragon Breath Weapon?" |
| Claggart04-17-06, 12:21 AM | I've never read the feat from the book...because I can't find the book anywhere...so I'm basing my assumptions on the Dragon Breath Sorcerer build that I mentioned previously. The build only had the feat once...presumably for "dragon breath" or "breath weapon." The seven forms chosen from Master Transmogrifist were all different types of dragons. My guess is that the creator of the build (I'll look it up again later, I've got to go to bed now) believed that the feat would cover the breath weapons of all dragons. I just found a link to the original build that I copied once upon a time: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=399206 Regardless, any more details about this feat would be appreciated. |
| Book04-17-06, 01:04 AM | If used in the way suggested by others (including myself), the feat gets a lot more flexibility and mileage when used in conjunction with the Chameleon Level 2 feat. That's assuming that you have a baseline build that synergizes with the Chameleon dip or heavy investment. |
