AT requirements [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-02-04, 04:09 PM Is there any race out there that will satisfy the AT requirement to be able to cast at least 1 3rd level arcane spells. I was hopeing that Aasimar's daylight would qualify, but I don't think it's arcane.

07-02-04, 04:16 PM A better approach, if you have a flexible DM, might be to talk him into letting you use the "Generic Spellcaster" class from Unearthed Arcana.

It's quite easy to build an Arcane Trickster with 20 caster levels and oodles of sneak attack with this class as a base.

07-02-04, 04:22 PM Racial spell-like abilities aren't spells, and so you can't qualify for classes like the AT that way.

Caelic's suggestion is a good alternative, if UA is legit for you.

07-02-04, 04:44 PM I haven't read unearthed Arcana, but in 3.5 you can't get more than 10 levels of the same prestige class before you get to level 20. Is a balance mechanism.
The AT would be broken otherwise, 20 levels of AT are stricktly better than 20 of any other base class. They compensate that with the requirements, that at the end, make you lose some habilities from both classes (rogue and wiz/sorc/bard)
As a DM I would never let you do that.

07-02-04, 04:48 PM He didn't 20 AT levels, he said an AT with 20 Caster Levels — the recipe is to take Generic Spellcaster & some sneak-attack class abilities, then go into AT. (I think that's how it works; don't have UA.

07-03-04, 01:43 AM Just so. An Arcane Trickster using the Generic Spellcaster class can wind up with a caster level of 20 and 10d6 of sneak attack...or, as an alternative, a caster level of 19 and 14d6 of sneak attack.

I haven't been able to work the numbers to get the extra 4d6 of sneak attack AND the caster level of 20 yet, but I'm working on it!
