im playing a gnome artificer in my cirrent campaign (level 3) and was wondering where i should take him as far a multi class/prextige in order to optimize his stregnth. The party has me using mostly wands at this point, and i use the party warfogred for cover during battle, also strengthening him, as thats pretty much all i can do at this point.

Repeat after me:

There is no class more powerful than the Artificer.

Now that we've got that out of the way, your utter domination won't really begin until seventh level. Before that, though, there are still things you can do. Don't overlook Personal Weapon Augmentation--adding the Bane ability to a missile weapon can give you a respectable attack in combat.

You want certain metamagic feats, and you want them as soon as possible. Extend, Persistent, and Twin are all must-haves. Quicken is iffy at this point, given that there's a lot of controversy over whether you can use it with a wand. If your DM says you can, that is also a must-have.

ok i get that. but are there any other classes i should take to extend my ability beyond what the artificer alone offers? i was thinking maybe the Maester prestige

If you do, I wouldn't take them early, and I wouldn't take more than four levels.

Artificer gets enough benefits throughout the first sixteen levels that there's really no prestige class which significantly betters it.

It will almost always make you strictly weaker. There are 2 decent places to get out of artificer ... level 8 and 12 (or level 7&11 if you don't care about BAB/saves/bonus-feats).

Maybe something like artificer 14/alchemist savant 5/maester 1.

ok that makes much more sense. my DM was trying to get me sawyed toward some sort of wand use that can dual weild wands, and the maester, saying level 6 would be best

awesome. any ideas on feats?

Oh yeah, the cannith wand adept (from the Sharn book). Always forget about that one. A decent PrC too, but as was said ... don't get into it before level 7. Metamagic spelltrigger and metamagic item are the bomb.

You should just lookup the humongous artificer threads on this board (and the one on the Eberron classes board).

Level 9 to get into CWA anyways. Dual Wand Wielding is nice, but the real reason to love the class is it ups the Wand Casting level and save DCs of your wands.

hmm, that is a nice feature, but if i took it i wouldnt stay in very long. the party does depend on me for magic and such, as the only semi spellcaster (wands etc) so having string spell trigger is nice.
