| Enoch Van Garret07-08-04, 10:43 AM | Due to a wish to recreate a supremely invincible GURPS character in D&D 3.5, I'm looking into a way to create a half-golem character who, instead of chopping off limbs and bolting on replacements, has his entire skeleton replaced with Iron or Brass to gain the Half-Golem template (shush, you Wolverine fanboys). Unfortunately, the save DC for such a thing to avoid becoming a full-blown construct is quite high - Will save of DC 55, I believe. Are there any spells or abilities that let you declare one saving throw per day/week/month/whatever an automatic success? At the level I'd want to add this template to the character, his Will save would likely be a +5 or lower, and it would be rather difficult to gain a +50 on a single saving throw. |
| amalcon07-08-04, 11:08 AM | It's possible to gain some absolutely stupid bonuses to saves if it only needs to be temporary. Wish to duplicate Moment of Prescience (or Miracle cast by a cleric with the Luck domain, or use Moment of Prescience itself if you can just do it) is the biggest one, for up to +25 insight. Greater Resistance can also give you a +6. Boost your Wisdom as well; borrowing the periapt +6 from a cleric will give you a total +39 with the +5 you mentioned. This still only succeeds on a 16 or higher, so you'll need some more help. Pale Green Prism Ioun Stone is worth +1, as is Stone of Good Luck, bringing you down to 14 or higher. I know there are things that allow you to reroll failed saves. Perhaps there's another item on the books which will help you. |

| amalcon07-08-04, 11:13 AM | Originally posted by Canoy Cloak of Resistance +5. Borrow it from closes High-level adventurer. Unfortunately this doesn't stack with the Greater Resistance I already listed. Also, just remembered, the Druid spell Owl's Insight can provide a better Wisdom bonus than a periapt. |
| Bond, James Bond07-08-04, 01:48 PM | - Hire a paladin cohort with the Gift of Grace feat (hope it was called that way) from th BoED, and "borrow" his divine grace bonus. - Heroism/greater Heroism spells give morale boni to saves as well, IIRC - Iron will/cumbrous will (SS) feats aint shabby either. - wish helps to reroll failed save |
| necrosnoop11007-08-04, 03:45 PM | There is a spell somewhere that allows you to roll two dice on any given roll and take the best roll - for the life of me I can't think of it... |
| Elgonn07-08-04, 04:52 PM | The power Fate of One in the XPH lets you reroll saves. |
| ksbsnowowl07-08-04, 05:25 PM | Contact a high-level cleric with the Protection domain. It won't stack with a cloak or greater resistance, but it'll surpass it.From the 3.5 SRD PROTECTION DOMAIN Granted Power: You can generate a protective ward as a supernatural ability. Grant someone you touch a resistance bonus equal to your cleric level on his or her next saving throw. Activating this power is a standard action. The protective ward is an abjuration effect with a duration of 1 hour that is usable once per day. |
| amalcon07-08-04, 07:01 PM | Ah yes, the Protection domain. That and Moment of Prescience will put you up to a potential +50. Boost your wisdom, get any other bonus, and you'll be making that save on a 2 in no time. |
| Caelic07-08-04, 07:29 PM | Ehrm...how, precisely, is a low-level character (as he presumably is, given the description) supposed to "convince" someone to cast these spells on him? Are there scads of 20th level clerics wandering around most campaign worlds with nothing better to do? |
| amalcon07-08-04, 07:35 PM | well, a low-level character is not likely to come by the means to have any of his organs replaced at all (at least in a way conducive to continued living)... |
| Enoch Van Garret07-08-04, 09:48 PM | Well, since the idea is now to become a mithril half-golem, chances are it won't be a low-level character. The original concept is undergoing some rethinking. |
| Caelic07-08-04, 10:09 PM | Do bear in mind that if you make the save, you don't get a lot of the half-golem goodies. |
| Elhalyn07-08-04, 11:04 PM | Get a ring of nine lives with a single charge (Magic of Faerun). IIRC, it should cost around 8000gp (a ring with nine charges costs something around 70.000gp), and it allows you to have auto sucess in a single Saving Throw/charge. |
| Enoch Van Garret07-09-04, 07:46 AM | Get a ring of nine lives with a single charge (Magic of Faerun). IIRC, it should cost around 8000gp (a ring with nine charges costs something around 70.000gp), and it allows you to have auto sucess in a single Saving Throw/charge. That's precisely what I was looking for, Elhalyn. Thank you very much. Do bear in mind that if you make the save, you don't get a lot of the half-golem goodies. The only thing you gain from failing the will save is construct traits, and you pay for it by losing your constitution score (not to mention your alignment changes to neutral evil and you become intent on killing fleshy creatures). The main reason the half-golem template is desired for this character is the magic immunity trait, which is fairly uber - an iron or bronze golem is immune to all spells, spell like abilities, and **supernatural effects** (which includes all forms of energy drain and death effects other than poison or disease) except for electricity-based spells (which slow you for 3 rounds, no more) and fire spells (which actually heal you). |
| necrosnoop11007-09-04, 09:24 AM | "Jack Burton... Me!" There is a spell somewhere that allows you to roll two dice on any given roll and take the best roll - for the life of me I can't think of it... I found it, it's called "Tanil's Touch" and it's from the Relics & Rituals book by Swords & Sorcery. Now that you discovered the ring of nine lives this spell is moot but I am posting it for the curious. Cheers, Necrosnoop |
