| Mordar10-30-06, 05:19 PM | I am kinda new at this, but when dealing with death effects, what are the best ways of counter them? like for example is there a way of avoiding a vorpal effect?, sorry for asking this but I haven't seen a thread dealing with this issue, if there is, I would greatly appreciate any information, thanks in advance And yes, the reason I am asking this is because I am planning of using the "king of smack" build made by lordshade (if it's allowed of course), and one of the main weakness of this build is the death type effects and the such, I am also playing an epic 26 lvl campaign again, and I'm seeing some way of beefing this character even more :) any books allowed (any suggestions also well appreciated) thanks for all the help from anyone willing to spend some time in this thread |
| fnord10-30-06, 05:23 PM | Death effects can be blocked by Soulfire armor ability (Book of Exalted Deeds, +3), which also blocks negative levels. Vorpal MIGHT be blocked by fortification, but other than that, I don't know how short of being able to survive a head loss. |
| ArcanaKnight10-30-06, 05:42 PM | If your DM allows it you could get special armor to protect your neck. If they can't get to it they can't cut it off. |
| NeoRealist10-30-06, 06:50 PM | Play a lumi. that is all. ;) (they are positive energy beings with floating heads that are specifically immune to vorpal effects as well as death and negative energy effects. a few other light related things too) |
| Endarire10-31-06, 12:35 AM | Soulfire as written in BoED is a +4. An armor or a shield of heavy fortification, a +5 mod, makes you crit immune. -EE |
| fnord10-31-06, 01:06 AM | Soulfire as written in BoED is a +4. Um, right. Remember, kids, friends don't let friends post on less than 2 hours of sleep. |
| Xaktsaroth10-31-06, 01:14 AM | Vorpal completely depends on scoring a crit. Becoming immune would mean a vorpal weapon shouldn't work. :) And yes, Soulfire is +4. |
| Momar10-31-06, 01:23 AM | As fnord indicated it's still the DM's call whether or not crit immunity from fortification actually blocks vorpal(fortification says it blocks extra damage but isn't clear on other effects). The DMs I've played under have ruled no (this turned out badly for the party paladin when he was relying on fortification in a fight with a balor). Your safest bet is to just avoid it and follow NeoRealist's advice or find some way to be immune to crits from something that's not fortification. Or screw the whole thing and hope you don't run into too many vorpal weapons. |
| Ogreman10-31-06, 01:30 AM | Or play as a chicken. If you get your head cut off, keep running around for about 10 hours. True story. Learned it with a Knowledge(wierd stuff) check. |
| Momar10-31-06, 01:33 AM | I thought they had some chicken that managed to last for weeks with his head cut off. He was in some kind of show or something if I recall. I can't seem to remember the chicken's name... |
| Mordar10-31-06, 01:34 AM | the reason I am asking this, is because I am using an elan psywar with the build from the king of smack (link here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=227556)), and my DM HATES elans, and usually thinks of vorpal to just finish them off, now, I might be thinking of purchasing the fortification and soulfire, my questions are, and please sorry for troubling so much 1.- is there any other way (by spending 26 lvl money), of also avoiding drain damage? 2.- Any tips for the other 6 lvls of the build?, I was thinking of just adding 4 lvls of sorcerer for the AWSOME wraithstrike (that way I will almost always hit and heal back :D) 3.- Any good items I can afford with lvl 26 money?, I mean there are a LOT but you know better than me in these stuffs thank you very much for spending a bit more of your time in this thread Or play as a chicken. If you get your head cut off, keep running around for about 10 hours. in that case, I could apply for the rapidstrke feat As I would be a chicken aberration :turkey: (yeah, there are no chicken emoticons) |
| Momar10-31-06, 01:47 AM | This build includes warshaper? That fixes the crit problem (at least as long as you're doing whatever it is this build does to morph). As I recall level 1 warshaper grants crit immunity. As for the levels I can't help much there, but make sure to tag warshaper 3 for the improved reach. |
