Well I've decided to try to make an awakened animal character. Several issues, How can I extend my life besides becoming a lich(and could I even live that long)? Is there a way to get hands if say I'm a wolf? What magic items could I use with and without hands?
I'm aiming for a wolf but do you have a better choice for a base creature?
And of course what other classes should I consider?

For druids that used wildshape there was a feat in the 3.0 book Masters of the Wild called Natural Shape that let you cats spells while in wild shape forms.
For Wizards, the only way i can think of would be taking "Still Spell", "Eschew Materials" and "Silent Spell".

oh, and also, there was a template in Dragon 313 called "Elder Serpent" that could be applied to any snake-like Animal or Magical beast of Int. 5 or lower.
You'd get +2 Str, +2 Dex, +2 Con, +2d6+6 Int, +2d4+4 Wis, +2d4+4 Cha. AND a bunch of great goodies...

Just a thought ;)

You've been beaten.

And the feat you're looking for is surrogate spellcasting. Savage Species.

I would make a spellcasting dinosaur, personally.

Yeah, i remember that thread, but in all truth, it wasn't done all that well IMO. Could've been much better. Not to mention the coolest idea ever....the AWAKENED GOLDFISH PSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not just be an aboleth then?
Didn't know this was a competition. Plus I'm serious.
I'm still really worried about the age thing, can a become a lich in less than twenty years? Or is there another way to extend my 'life'?

Well, i haven't really been interested in long age since 2ed when there used to be some potions....hmmmm.....in 3.x, your safest bet would most likely be a transformational PrC such as Acolyte of the Skin, Elemental Savant, etc., Or simply playing an Elan which are virtually ageless. If you - don't - want to have such a PrC or you don't want to play an elan, there was an epic feat that extended your lifespan, but once you hit epic all hell breaks loose....that's a can of worms i'm not willing to open :P

There is a pseudo race in Libris Mortis called Necropolitan. It's kind of like a lich, but you lose a level when becoming one and don't get many bonuses. Hit dice change to d12's and you get the undead type. It is also a lot cheaper than becoming a lich.

Natural Spell is also in the 3.5 PHB I believe. As far as items go, you could conceivably use bracers, a cloak, a necklace/collar. Maybe a ring on your tail. It depends on if your items will size to you or not.

I've always wondered, whats the CR adjustment/LA for awakening?
I could understand the resoning behind +1 or +0 I don't think I've ever seen it discussed...

I'm a lazy sack of rat drippings though and haven't looked really hard, any of you have any thread links or anything?

There shouldn't be a level adjustment since you can't use a lot of equipment.

Actually, there is no level adjustment but you get +2hd from becoming awakened animal, thus you "lose" two levels...

Wolves apparently have two hit dice so wouldn't the awakened character be 4 ecl(or do I still have no clue)?
Also maybe its just late but I remember a PRC from somewhere that gives you animal and I think plant features, I remember it scaled up(first claws then wings etc)? what class was this and what book did I see it in?

Sorry little question here, the awaken spell reads 'An awakened animal gets 3d6 inteligence.' is that in addition to the base creatures inteligence?

no, it gets replaced.
Thoughif you want to make a wizard, like the previous thread, you could make a case that if someone went through the trouble of awakening animals to give them an education, he'd pick the most intelligent one ;)

Yes, you are correct. The Wolf would have an ECL of 4.

I think you might be refering to the Geomancer. It's from Masters of the Wild and the 3.5 version is in Complete Divine.
However, it requires you to be a multiclass spellcaster.

I created an awakened Cat Psion. That was a lot of fun.
